BOOK YOUR PLACE – World Class Animation Workshop
The world of animation keeps on keeping on what with the phenomenon of South African based MANGA and ANIMATION magazines such as LO (click here to go there) and others animation seems to be finally taking off. Here’s your chance to take part in a workshop featuring international Animation experts…. PR: Anamazing Workshop and its partners in the Animat…ion Production Training Initiative (APTI), the Department of Arts and Culture, the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), SABC and NEMISA are hosting a world class animation writing workshop in Johannesburg on March 13th and 14th. APTI partners are delighted at the participation of respected animation writers and mentors Penelope Middleboe and Martin Lamb. Middleboe and Lamb of the UK based company Right Angle have written and script edited around 90 animated films. They work solely in the areas of adaptation and fiction for adult and family audiences and are respected for their work on projects that embrace cultural diversity. They are currently completing the world’s largest co-production, the 39 part series, Animated Tales of the World. Their works includes the Oscar nominated Canterbury Tales, the Banff winner, Moby Dick and BAFTA winner Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The APTI workshop follows on the selection of 16 writers from across the country. These writers had submitted their projects to a national call for 3 minute animation film concepts for children. Intensive script and production development will result in 13 short films due for broadcast and distribution early 2007. 5FM is the lonely finger…. heh?
SO you know it’s 5fm. Mhhmmm bit of a let down. Nice idea though. ********************************************************** Last night while travelling along Empire road near Milpark we spotted some posters spread all over a messy wall, craning my head to see if i read correctly, i saw a drawing of a spooky face with the words “lonelyfinger.co.za”…. Now not every poster catches our eye, but there was something really appealing about the aesthetics of this one, which instantly got us wondering. Cick here to start wondering… So today we went to check the site out and were pleasantly suprised… it is a beautifully designed although somewhat dark and downer site… Our guess is that it’s about depression – but don’t hold us to that. Although the layout of the site reminds us of those online games that you have to spend hours on looking for clues and a secret click-spot…. the only place that had a slight hint at something more was the telephone booth with a blurry number on it – any ideas? But we don’t give up that easily… we went and did a search on google (of course) and found a photo of Jason Bagley on 43 Things standing with the lonelyfinger….click here to go there. Then we looked Jason up and it turns out he is a web designer in Cape Town, click here for his blog. Question is how does he know the lonelyfinger? We have emailed him and await his response… we love a challenge! Thanks to those busy bees at Marketing Web, we have a little more insight into the lonelyfinger.co.za – apparently all will be revealed on the 24 February 2006. They seem to think it’s an advertising ploy – maybe it’s the money behind the whole concept that suggests this, maybe not, maybe it’s just a creative guy giving us out own post secret? Some 10,000 curious people visited the website in the first two weeks it was up and running – it went live on December 22 — but were left no wiser about its origins. The website shows a sad finger involved in various lonely activities. Speculation is rife about who’s behind the campaign. High on the list of contenders are Jupiter, Net#work BBDO and maybe Ogilvy. Our artists interpret Picasso under African skies
You have to give it to the French, they have such taste and style… just look at this gorgeous flyer… unique, original, interesting, human…. it really makes me want to be there. Be where you ask? At another amazing event aranged by the French Institute. Their cultural team must be working overtime with the number of incredible doos that they pull off in a year. Merci beaucoup! On avance! … This time it’s a branch off from the PICASSO exhibition (which by the way you must go to – only 15 days left. We promise to go soon as. Or maybe we will just go to this event and kill two birds…? Anyway, it seems that they’re moving some of the exhibit from the Standard Bank gallery to the DRILL Hall – yes – the latest hottest cultural space in downtown Jozi… another bird to kill. 24 artists have have been invited to respond to the PICASSO IN AFRICA exhibit with their own take on his work without including any of it… sounds delicious. As they put it: “Let’s imagine a one night stand with Picasso in downtown Jo’burg, a perfect setting for a cubist, blue, pink or African party, with the skyscrapers in the background, and a gathering of artists in the boiling pot of the Drill Hall. No doubt the man who loved to push the limits of imagination and creativity would have loved the idea, and redesigned Jozi’s skyline and people in his own crazy way. So, for one night, let’s try to be as crazy and visionary as him, and let’s hear, see, feel and touch how today’s artists play with the old genius.” SOUNDS GOOD? Tribute to TK – Sultry, soulful and sure.
Editorista “SJ” remembers the soulful lady “TK”: At about 4pm on Monday afternoon my phone buzzed with a message that was to alter my mood for a few days and nights… “CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, TK WAS FOUND DEAD IN A HOTEL ROOM TODAY!” I didn’t even have to wonder which TK the SMS referred to as there was only one TK in my world and that was the feisty 27 year old songstress Tsakani …“TK” Mhinga. I was lucky enough to work with TK on numerous occasions, as were many of my friends, all of whom are utterly devastated to hear about her tragic death. Her voice, performance and talent were integral to some of the best events work I have ever been party to – TK shone on stage and had an unforgettable confidence and sultry style. Sadly though, the last time I worked with her, which was more than a year ago, she seemed to have lost some kind of sparkle and shine, almost as if she had reached a ceiling in her performance life that she just didn’t have the effort or energy to break through. She was late, distant and a little disinterested in her performance (which was rare, no matter how exhaused she was!), but as soon as the music started and I had coaxed her to her opening position, the star in her just took over… the mic was hers, the room was hers, the night was hers -she was sure. TK set the tone for an event that would later be praised as the “Party of the year” and win the highest of awards. I will never forget that moment. I will never forget TK. There is so much to be said about how and why TK died and as the official statements around her death are released we hope that the truth will out.
