Walking the Walk Talking the Talk

Thanks to Penelope for her story – We were so inspired that Editorista and her friend BoogieLuv have been walking around the early morning city falling in love with a waking Joburg all over again (remember those early school days?) We think it’s high time for a walking revolution. Yes lots of us walk to work, but not enough people in the suburbs …(you know who you are) walk around the streets. Come on, reclaim the streets. Reclaim your health. GET WALKING! Click here for The Walking Site that can tell you all about how to walk to get fit. Need to shed the extra kilos gained over the festive season? Feeling just a little guilty about the hours sitting in front of a screen… .be it the computer or the T.V. Can’t face joining the gym and paying joining fees yet again whilst knowing its not going to last? Beginning to think just a little about cholestral, blood pressure etc. problems…Well the answer is simple start walking! And its Free! It’s a fact that you only use up 250 calories for an hour of walking in comparison to scrubbing floors and using up 275 calories or mowing the lawn and burning up 400 calories!! This is fun, fun, fun!! First you need decent shoes and then you need a friend. A friend who is supportive and lives conveniently close by. A friend who acts as your early morning alarm clock and conscience! Trust me I know and its working for me. I have a friend Bernie who is 61 years old and joined the gym a year ago where she does Tai Chi, Pilates, dancing classes and water aerobics so she is rather fit! She lives downstairs from where I do which is just so convenient. While I am a middle aged whitey, Bernie is of “colour” and I do believe my first real friend of colour whilst living in South Africa!! This friendship has only just happened during the hours of five and seven a.m. whilst we pound the pavements and chat. Every day is like starting a new chapter in my novel as Bernie shares another segment of her life. While we walk the walk she talks the talk and all my aches and pains are forgotten as I concentrate on the stories of her fascinating life. How we have been robbed of sharing the experiences of each others lives by our separate lifestyles and the regime of the day. Due to our paranoia of being safe (wisely so I think) I shed myself of our jewelry “just in case” but not Bernie…she wears rings on...

Craig’s List finally hits Johannesburg

Craig’s List finally hits Johannesburg

Our friend Stoffel told us about Craig’s list mid-way through last year – at that stage Johannesburg wasn’t on the list so we didn’t tell you about it as it had little relevance – well now it is and we need to start using it! Craigs LIst is basically like the whole worlds classifieds – a list of everything you need to find – it all started in San Francisco and now no city is a functioning… city without being listed with Craig. You can rent a house in New York, sell a car in Stockholm and find a boyfriend in Sydney… or a dog. It’s appeal is that it, like google, is simple, clean and easy to use. It is a refreshing change from the usual banner-infested website. You go guys… you see, we told you less is more. BY THE WAY THERE IS ONE FOR CAPE TOWN TOO – go on, click on your city JOHANNESBURG CRAIG’s LIST CAPE TOWN CRAIG’s LIST craigslist is about: giving each other a break, getting the word out about everyday, real-world stuff. restoring the human voice to the Internet, in a humane, non-commercial environment. keeping things simple, common-sense, down-to-earth, honest, very real. providing an alternative to impersonal, big-media sites. being inclusive, giving a voice to the disenfranchised, democratizing … being a collection of communities with similar spirit, not a single monolithic entity. a little history: Craig Newmark observed people on the Net, on the WELL and in Usenet, helping one another out. In early ’95, he decided to help out, in a very small way, telling people about cool events around San Francisco like the Anon Salon and Joe’s Digital Diner. It spread through word of mouth, and became large enough to demand the use of a list server, majordomo, which required a name. Craig wanted to call it “sf-events”, but more knowledgeable friends suggested calling it “craigslist” to reinforce its personal and down-to-earth nature. He still finds it awkward that such a visible site is named after him, but he’ll get over it. Over time, people started posting items on the list in different areas, jobs, stuff for sale, and apartments, the latter in response to San Francisco’s apartment shortage. Craig wrote software which could automatically add email postings to a site which became www.craigslist.org. After being approached toward the end of ’97 about running banner ads, he decided to make craigslist non-commercial. Some things should be about money, some shouldn’t, and I make enough doing contract programming.” He was joined by other folks who proposed running face-to-face parties to make the sense of virtual community more physical, and who...
