May Johannesburg Bless You.

May Johannesburg Bless You.

Now in its 2nd year, May Johannesburg Bless You brings together young creatives each year in May to document the state of the city of Johannesburg as they see it. The collaborating team is hand picked based on pro-active work done by young people in Journalism, Creative Writing, Photography and young entrepreneurs who offer services that contribute to the production of each series. It is a series of “unspoken known truths”. Rising young Photographers Simphiwe “Vice” Nene and Sherilea Gaspar of GASphotography captured the 10 piece 2013 series. It maintains its challenge for the public to imagine itself as the protagonists in the everyday stories told by the unsightly vagabonds in South Africa’s traffic intersections. The idea twists and exchanges roles removing the hobo and replacing it with you! The “normal” citizen who supposedly contends with “less” problem. With only 20 seconds a traffic light, a homeless person wielding a piece of cardboard laden with carefully planned writing regardless of the shattered grammar tells you their whole life story and can have you wretched with guilt for driving that car or even having clothes with no holes in them. The stories they write always have a secret weapon or a trump card. The words “May God Bless You”, these words are as good to a homeless person as a bank guaranteed check. The series then asks is it really the case? Do “normal” and “comfortable” citizens live with “less tragic” problems? Are they worthy of donations monetary or otherwise from strangers? But who is there to help you with your supposedly “easy” problems? Consider anaccountant who is ravaged by debt yet lives in a mansion and drives a posh car? Who is there to help him with change? Is there help for a father who continuously rapes his daughter and wants change? The silver spoon raised educated black diamond who concludes that poverty is a choice and society must change. The series supposes that in all our differences each and every one of us has a prayer to be fulfilled- a prayer for a successful day in Joburg. The images drive forward society’s personal stories and also mimics society in judging and asking how did one get to be the way they are. Couldn’t they see it coming? May Johannesburg Bless You suggests that we are all the same but in different circumstances. More than a social commentary and activist series, May Johannesburg Bless You is a skills transfer initiative for young creatives and entrepreneurs. Understanding the costs of tertiary education in commercial creative fields Founder and Creative Directors Banele Rewo and Art Director Ntsako Mitenda established I Create...

SA’s top comedians celebrated at The 3rd Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards™

We are thrilled to bring you the winners for The 3rd Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards 2013, and winners are… Paparazzi and film crews flooded the yellow carpet at The 3rd Annual Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA) at the Teatro at Montecasino on Saturday 24 August. AsSouth Africa’s comedy industry came out to recognise and award some of its own, excitement for the evening’s gala event was contagious as everyone waited in anticipation to see who’d walk away with one of the six coveted Waldo’s. Far from a standard award ceremony, the variety show kicked off with an eruption of applause as Parkour free-runners abseiled from the roof to the sound of live gunfire.  Audiences were treated to unbelievable production design and celebrity guest appearances from the likes of Jahmil Qubeka, Joe Mafela and Anele Ndoda. Winners performed seven minutes of stand-up as their “acceptance speech” and their pride (and tears of joy and laughter) were felt by all those lucky enough to have attended the comedy industry’s crowning event. Comedians vote for their peers to win the Waldo’s, with only one award, the Savanna Audience Choice Award, being open to public vote; and multi-award winning Sifiso Nene took home this year’s coveted Waldo for the second year running. Pioneering comic Kagiso Lediga won the respect of his peers for his sharp-witted content creation and was awarded The Times Comic’s Pen Award; a well-deserved accolade for one of SA’s most venerable comedians. Mpho Popps Modikoane’s youthful talent and charming comedic disposition were recognized by the industry as he was awarded the BlackBerry Breakthrough Act Award. At Soweto’s Savanna Newcomer’s Showcase in June, crowds gave Schalk Bezuidenhout a standing ovation, so it was no surprise that this mustachioed comic with his trademark ironic jersey and ankle-length trousers would be voted for by industry to win the Waldo in the Savanna Newcomer Awardcategory. Trevor Noah was awarded The Comic’s Choice Comic of the Year Award once again but was unable to attend due to health reasons, while legendary ‘Cousin’ Barry Hilton was the well-deserving recipient of The Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s theme, “The Art Of Funny” centered on self-expression and social justice, so whilst audiences laughed at the collaborative sketches, there was an underlying message of how comedians, much like graffiti artists and free-runners have the ability to reshape reality, drive a revolution and change the world.  The opening message of the awards encapsulated that ethos – “A free runner is a human soul that refuses to see walls. They use barriers created by authorities as canvases on which to celebrate freedom and rebellion… So do stand-up comics.” Pulling out all the stops to deliver the best event yet, the CCA team produced a magnificent...
