An interview with Angus from a 1000 Drawings.

Represent got in touch with Angus, the man behind a 1000 drawings. Read the interview below. 1. Hi Angus, please tell me who inspired the 1000Drawings project? I have taken this off of our website – I think it is a good summary of how we started 1000drawings: In 2006, Paballo, an inner-city charity faced a big problem. Its bakkie had been stolen. Paballo ya Batho (sotho for “caring for the people”) organises a mobile soup kitchen every Wednesday night to support the Jozi homeless community. The loss of the bakkie made transport of soup and bread to inner-city homeless people near impossible. Something had to be done. A little rescue plan was dreamt up. It was hoped that a fundraiser would collect enough money for a new bakkie. In addition, it was hoped that money would be raised to help pay off some of Paballo’s debts and allow Paballo to put time and money into new endeavours. It was in an effort to address these needs that the Night of a 1000Drawings came into being. The name originates from an existing commercial model that began in America but the 1000Drawings concept now has a uniquely South African flavour as it grows and spreads around the world. 2. I see there’s a story behind a 1000 drawings, in turn, who do you aim to inspire with it? 1000Drawings seems to have a powerful appeal and attraction for those who work in typically creative industries. It allows people to explore art and drawing and engage with people who share this interest but most importantly it allows people to make an impact or change lives through interaction with the charities involved. 3. Who are the driving forces behind this project? The project was conceptualised by Felix Frankenberger and Dave Chong and they, along with some great supporters and sponsors, managed to get volunteers together to put it all together from 2006. The project has grown and now each region has its own committee and volunteer group who put it all together. 4. Who’s eligible to draw or submit a drawing? Absolutely anyone. 5. Will this people be credited for their artistry? Some of the A5 drawings are donated by well-known artists but we display all the pieces together and sell each drawing for R100. Generally you would only know that you had acquired a drawing from a well-known artist after you had purchased it. We are quite strict about this as we aim to give exposure and opportunity to every artist and we want people to understand the main objective of 1000Drawings is to raise money and support charity. 6. How can...

Introducing to you, REASON!

Young, gifted with rap. Youʼd be forgiven for thinking this is hip-hop artist Sizwe “Reason” Moeketsiʼs moniker. Having broken into the music industry early, this young artist has a starpower and longevity that belies his age. Read more after the jump. Born in Tembisa and raised in Katlehong, Reason came up as a battle rapper competing in numerous competitions, both official and on the street corner. It wasnʼt long before Johannesburg began to take notice and he began making appearances on YFM delivering breakfast jingles for DJ Fresh on “The Unrestricted Breakfast Show” in 2005. Reason has gone on to be named Hype Magazineʼs King of the Bedroom and was named “Emcee of the Month” by Hip Hopʼs first lady Lee Kasumba in March 2006 on YFM “Rap Activity”. This buzz propelled Reason to multiple shows across South Africa as well as a Scandinavian tour. Since then, Reason has gone to collaborate with some of South Africaʼs most prolific rappers such as Proverb, Tumi, Zubz, ILL Skillz, HHP, Amu, and AKA. Reasonʼs first studio release “The Reasoning”, boasting the production talents of Battlekat, Instro, Mizi, Rastic Ras and Ootz The Afronaut, garnered critical acclaim posting 4 stars in Hype Magazine, positioning it as one of South Africaʼs highest rated albums in 2010. Reason then joined South Africaʼs largest hip-hop brand Kool Out Entertainment as the featured Emcee and host for all Johannesburg events and has performed with international stars Ras Kass, Qwazzar (Typical Cats), KʼNaan, Masta Ace, and Talib Kweli. In 2011, this “Unsigned Hype” joined Motif Records, marking a new step in his career and featured his first official label release in June 2012, “Audio 3D”. Savanna and The CCA’s launch a night of comedy at The Soweto Theatre.

The Soweto Theatre erupted in applause on Tuesday night as 21 new comedians delivered their best performances for South Africa’s comedy industry in an exciting new event launched in the run up to The 3rd Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA’s). The first event of its kind ever, the inaugural Savanna Newcomer’s Showcase surprised everyone with its caliber of raw talent and fresh material and the theatre echoed with wild applause and standing ovations. As the CCA’s is an industry event, the nominees in the Newcomer category are voted for by their peers and not the public, which gave rise to the question “how does the industry know who to vote for if they’ve never seen these Newcomers perform?” Inspired by this insight, Savanna and the CCA team created this developmental initiative to give SA’s budding talent a platform to strut their stuff in front of SA’s finest, in a bid to be selected as one of the four nominees in their category. An event for beginners, no one knew quite how it would turn out, so it takes a brave brand to see the potential in something and back it on the feeling that its simply going to be great!  Instead of just sponsoring the awards, Savanna reached out to all  registered Newcomers, flew in the out-of-towners and proved that they really are in the trenches with comedy by giving each comedian a five minute slot in one momentous evening hosted by the hilarious Kagiso Lediga.  “It was a true sign that SA comedy has come of age, is extremely diverse and world class”, stated a proud Lediga after the show. Garnering massive support from the industry, previous award winners and the country’s iconic talent cheered and jeered with endorsements from the likes of Alyn Adams, Ndumiso Lindi, Lazola Gola, Skhumba Hlophe and Goliath and Goliath. “The crew and the acts all worked out into a fantastic mix.  Our gut tells us that we have started something very important in Soweto.  Thanks Savanna, you’re building comedy history with us and we are most grateful”, comments John Vlismas, founder of the CCA. Career-defining moments were captured by numerous Tweets from Newcomers throughout the night, such as Eureka Nkese’s “The Showcase was amazing. Performing at the beautiful Soweto Theatre alongside Kagiso Lediga will be an unforgettable experience for me. I felt like a real comedian”, and Newcomer Liam Bento’s “Easily one of the biggest highlights of my comedy career, meeting other comics, getting advice from seasoned comics, amazing venue… Priceless!!!” Newcomer Nicholas Goliath: “Comedy is the future and the Savanna Newcomer’s Showcase proves that the industry is growing in leaps and bounds” Watch the...

The Hives and Skunk Anansie join rocking international line-up for Vodacom In the City

“#SkunkAnansie – BEST concert I ever saw in South Africa. Ever Ever.” Words from our Editor in Chief  at hearing this British band is making their return to South Africa for Vodacom – IN THE CITY. Without a doubt, with a catalog of more than 5 albums we are sure Ed in Chief is gonna be in for some sound treat worth noting. Without further hold up, read more after the jump. Vodacom In the City has added Swedish rock sensation The Hives and revived iconic British band Skunk Anansie to this year’s international line-up, cementing the festival’s creds as one of the edgiest and most anticipated music events on the South African calendar. These two powerful and dynamic music forces now join alt-j and Boys Noize for this one-day music festival, and all are guaranteed to rock downtown Jo’burg and the 15,000 fans who will pound the ground at Newtown’s Mary Fitzgerald Square on 4 October 2013. The Hives will no doubt satisfy long-standing fans with music ranging from their early albums Barely Legal (1997) and Veni Vidi Vicious (2000) to Tyrannosaurus Hives (2004), The Black and White Album (2007) and their most recent Lex Hives (2012). Catapulting them to international rock status with hits like Hate To Say I Told You So, Main Offender,Supply And Demand and Die, Alright! off of Your New Favourite Band (a compilation of songs from Barely Legal, VVV and the A.k.a I-D-I-O-T EP) The Hives made lovers of garage-rock sit up and take notice. Tyrannosaurus Hives gave birth to tracks Walk Idiot Walk, Two-Timing Touch & Broken Bones and A Little More For Little You; and The Black and White Album shook the airwaves with its hit single Tick Tick Boom!. Knowing they still had so much awesomeness to share with the world, the 12-track compilation Lex Hives was released in 2012 on The Hives’ own label, Disques Hives. Lead single Go Right Ahead moved the band into glam-punk territory and was met with rave reviews and huge airplay. Be prepared to rock out with The Hives when they’re unleashed on the Vodacom In the City stage, performing in their trademark black and white suits. That same stage will also host the brooding, funky beats, edgy lyrics and punk riffs of Skunk Anansie. Reunited after an eight-year hiatus, Skunk Anansie have “come home”, says lead singer Skin. Along with band members Ace (guitar), Cass Lewis (bass) and Mark Richardson (drums), Skunk Anansie have rekindled the feeling and soul of their previous work to continue the distinctive and dynamic sound that has made them the award-winning music force they are today. Skunk Anansie will get feet stomping and crowds jumping with their versatile range of hits from multi-platinum albums Paranoid And Sunburnt(1995), Stoosh (1996) and Post Orgasmic Chill (1999). Fans will remember singles like Brazen (Weep), Hedonism...
