Book of the Week: Fabulously 40 and beyond
Life is not always about us youngens you know… and besides that we are all going to turn the big 40 one day, (if we live that long), so why not read what it is like to be a forty year old woman living in South Africa, straight from the real deal women themselves, can’t wait to get their perspective… Book: Fabulously 40 and beyond Author : Orford, Margie;Schimke, Karin Subtitle: Coming into Your Power an Embracing Change Our price: R 128.00 Availability: Approx. 5 – 9 Working Days Paperback EAN : 9780864865885 144 pages Publication Date : 30 September 2006 Publisher : New Africa Education Publishing,South Africa Country of publication: South Africa Synopsis The authors spent time finding out how South African women respond to this phenomenon referred to as over 40. The result is a title that a woman would give to herself, to a friend or to a daughter going through this big transition period that involves psychological and physiological change that brings about much contemplation. Fabulously 40 and beyond is written primarily from an extensive base of questionnaires as well as from feedback from media work during the books development. The authors then synthesised and wrote this title from an extensive base of questionnaires and from feedback from media work to bring on important themes including identity, spirituality, body, family and other animals, leisure and pleasure. At the centre is a certain power that women come into as they move into their 40s and beyond which is a clear measure of where women in their 40s are at. Clearly, the title demonstrates that these women have humour, lightness, know how much they own, and do juggle things to get things in life to go the way they want. The book offers practical advice as well as relevant statistics. During the research phase Fabulously 40 and beyond saw much media interest including a feature on SAFM Otherwise, in Femina magazine and on Radio 702. This is no doubt a much-needed book that fills a gap dealing with this often difficult or traumatic stage in womens lives....
Catch a Fire, finally in SA!
You know things have changed for the better in South Africa when you have local stars such as Bonnie Henna (formerly Mbuli) and Tumisho Masha starring alongside some of Hollywood’s hottest in the form of Academy Award© winner Tim Robbins (Mystic River, The Shawshank Redemption) and Derek Luke (Glory Road, Friday Night Lights). And you know you’re on Represent when you can read an interview between *Miss P* and the beautiful Bonnie Henna and talented Tumisho Masha on the movie Catch a Fire premiering in SA this Friday 09 February! Directed by Australian veteran Phillip Noyce, (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) Catch and Fire is the powerful true story of the life of Patrick Chamusso’s hero journey to find freedom during the divided times in the early 1980’s in South Africa. The film was shot in locations where the real action happened all those years ago! Bonnie Henna plays the role of Precious, wife to Derek Luke who plays Patrick Chamusso in the movie. We chatted about the experience, the accent and the afro… RR: This is not your first movie, but this is pretty huge, how do you feel? BH: I’m really pleased with the film and my experience of working on it. I think it’s a brilliant film that has helped stretch my capacity as an actress. RR: What are your feelings on the movie as a whole? BH: I think it’s a wonderful film and beautifully told. RR: How would you describe the experience of working with veteran director Phillip Noyce? BH: Phillip Noyce is a great director with an impressive track record, I learnt so much from him, and he is also one of the kindest and compassionate people I’ve ever met. RR: Precious Chamusso’s accent is indigenous to South Africa, but it is not yours personally, was it easy to pull it off? BH: The accent was quiet challenging; the test was maintaining it throughout the film. RR: In an article about the movie you are quoted saying “I want to become one of the best actresses in the world” how do you plan to do this? BH: My perspective has changed since then, I am more concerned about the people I will meet and work with, the things I can learn from them, traveling the world and enjoying the journey. RR: Do you think South Africa has enough opportunities for talented actors? BH: My dreams and goals are not limited to the availability of opportunities in South Africa; there is always a bigger picture. RR: How do you feel about the lead role being played by a non- South African? BH:...
Review: Greenside: Mama Themba’s v Vide e Caffe
Greenside is a fabulous Johannesburg suburb, there’s something so chilled, green and alluring about it but at the same time it keeps a low profile of sorts. Lets face it, as far as our pavement suburbs go, it lacks the grunge of Melville and Norwood, it doesn’t have the same consistent finesse (minus Jollies) of Parkhurst and you don’t get the village feel of Parkview. But is does have it’s own style. Vida e Caffe, is our latest most favourite coffee shop!… And the newly opened Mama Themba’s certainly adds a grungy feel. SJ reviewed the two Greenside restaurants for you right here. (Told you Editorista would be on the prowl…) Vida e Caffe Greenside was the first shop in the Vida Joburg clan, followed by Rosebank, Sandton and the newly opened Hyde Park. Vida lives the essence of ‘less is more’ with a brilliantly simple concept inspired by the flavours and textures of Portugal- it guarantees an overall pleasant, relaxed experience. We love the quirky touches like the dudes who sing a little song when you put a tip in the box “Obregado” (Sharpile in Portuguese) and the other little ditty they chant for when ladies arrive at the counter… “Ola Magents check out the ladies…” (something like that) – very flirty! You order from the counter, there’s a simple yet satisfying menu to choose from and you get to sit at “aesthetically appealing” table and chairs (for the design-minded)… and simply relax. If you’re lucky, there may even be a jazz performance from the very talented Marcus Wyatt or Carlo Mombelli and various supporting dishy musicians. Good taste. So good they were awarded a prize by the godfather of good taste, Wallpaper* Magazine for best coffee shop design or concept. We highly recommend JAZZ at VIDA in Greenside on Sunday mornings or at the Rosebank Vida (The Zone) on Saturday mornings. Click here to see our Youtube clip on Carlo Mombelli at the Vida in Rosebank on a Sat or watch the video at the end of this post. And… secret… if you go round closing time, which iis generally round 6pm, the staff hand out the remaining delicious and decadent muffins to all clientele – Mahala! And now onto Mama Themba’s…. eish. Well first of all, we thought we’d been teleported to the 80s when we walked past the colourful shopfront and busy pavement – it’s got an old, worn look and feels like it’s been there for years. But clearly it hasn’t been there for years as it wasn’t there last year. Apparently it used to be in Linden and recently relocated to Greenside. Well anyway, our experience wasn’t particularly pleasant but maybe we’re not the clientele they are after. First off, while we decided what we were going to have, we ordered still water and they...
In Honour of Mama Tambo!
Representers as you may already know Mama Adelaide Frances (Tshukudu) Tambo has passed away at the age of 77. Mama Tambo was an anti- apartheid activist and a hero of the liberation struggle who fought against racism in all forms. She was also a recipient of the Order of the Baobab in Gold- one of the highest honours in our country. The order is named after the baobab tree, which was chosen as a symbol because of its endurance and tolerance, its vitality, and its use as a meeting place in traditional African societies. The Represent team would like to pay tribute to Mama Tambo – we send our condolences to the Tambo family during this sad time. This is your platform to do the same or send any dedications to her honour… simply leave a comment. “Hamba Kahle Mama!”Picture courtesy of South African History Online. Fashion Icon, Gavin Rajah joins the Paris elite
As you already know Represent is a big supporter of local talent and we track them down anywhere in the world! Like our very own Gavin Rajah who showed his Spring /Summer collection last week during Paris Fashion Week at the Cercle de l’Union Interalliée to a VIP audience of celebrities, dignitaries, media and fashion buyers. He’s also doing his bit for charity so that’s a big pat on the back from us! UNICEF and Rajah announced their partnership in championing the rights of children and in particular their development and protection. Having achieved local international success, Rajah felt the time was right to give something back to the community. A percentage of all the Gavin Rajah clothing and accessory sales will be donated to UNICEF. Rajah joins celebrities such as David Beckham, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Robbie Williams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Yassou N’Dour and Roger Federer in their commitment to supporting UNICEF. The Rajah collection was designed and created by a team of South Africans in his atelier in Cape Town. Gavin Rajah was inspired by the eclecticism and oriental occidentalism of the 1970’s, reflecting the Maharishi cults of that era, when new-age thinkers flocked to the Far East in search of the meaning of life. Rajah played with proportions and volume in a new way. Rather than an obvious use of masses of fabric, Rajah created volume by cutting on the bias and layering fabrics, which add volume and mystery; complemented by the use of hosiery. The collection, alive with colour, proportion and rituals, reflected psychedelic reverie. Rajah joined forces with Cameo, South Africa, to manufacture unique hosiery that adds to the mood of the collection. Bamboo linens have been laminated with a metallic finish together with silk mousselines and finely beaded tulles and laces, ranging from almost Baroque detailing to earlier Gothic. Exotic skins such as crocodile and ostrich add intrigue, mystery and an edge to the collection. Despite his international success, Rajah remains true to his South African roots and will bring his couture collection back to share with South Africans at the Audi Joburg Fashion Wek on the 17th February 2007.The Gavin Rajah store is now open at Cavendish Square, Cape Town (Ground Floor, next to Mugg and...
Wssup Representers? Welcome Back!
We’re finally back from the holidays and as you can see Represent is looking as slick as ever with a brand new supafly look. We’re entering into the New Year with some serious attitude! With the new look comes a bit of a shifting of the furniture too, so there are a few changes that we’d like to share with you all. Topping the list is that our much loved Editorista and creator of Represent has appointed a new Editor to take us to the next level (that’s me). Editorista will now be the Editor-in-chief of Represent -she leaves a huge pair of shoes to fill. She’s still on the prowl in Jozi though, so watch this space… SHARPILE! Thanks also to Aquoibon, the man behind the original fabulara Represent design that has set our bar so high… he won’t be far away either. Next are the different elements that are now a part of Represent; if you look on the right of the home page you will see that our Categories are still there but some of them have different names, keep tabs of the categories because if you miss anything on the front page, you can always look for it in there. e.g: an article that had something to do with music would be found in the category “Musique”, easy ne? If you look below Links you will see a “Flickr” image – this is a link to our Flickr community where you can click on to check out the latest Represent pictures – you might just find yourself in one of those! And click on “Videos” right below that for our YouTube Represent community to have a skwizz at the funkiest, cutest, funniest, weirdest or whateverest video clips from all over the place. (we’re still uploading our vid’s – please bear with us!) The Editor’s Top 10 is on the header bar at the top of the site. It’s all about what I think are the Top Ten things of the moment – take note I’m no style guru so I’m not going to try and predict the latest or upcoming fashion fad, but nonetheless it will be interesting- the first Top Ten is all about… yep you guessed it, the New Year! Our ‘look and feel’ will be changing every now and then as we invite designers that we love to design our wallpaper… we start the year with this awesome background from Mzwandile of Pinartbutter – see the interview with him here. And many many thanks to the team who have spent the last few months reinventing Represent, especially Cape Town boy Mark who...
