Vanessa is our first Survivor – You go girl!
Exciting, nail-biting, neck on neck, riveting – what more can we say? Big ups to Mnet for a job well done – we can’t wait for the next installment. To Vanessa Marawa, the deep-voiced one, well done babe, it’s a win for women and black women both in SA and the world over – nice one! Jacinda – jammer meisie- jy was baie slim en het goed gespeel maar jy kon meer vriende gemaak het. And as for th… at make-up – you look much better tanned and fresh. We’re delighted with the results and are so glad we hung in for the action – Mzi bro, you know we love you – but that was a weird last grasp at straws bru and what we believe sealed your fate. You will surely have a colourful life post this experience and we wish all the contestants the best. Thanks for the entertainment. ================================ What an awesome twist in the penultimate episode of Survivor finally giving the viewers some nail-biting moments – Gareth is out and two of our favourites Vanessa and Mzi are back in… we love it. Come on Representers, place your bets. Who is it going to be? Here’s our bet: In an ideal world our favourite sexy fisher man would get the bucks: 1. Mzi 2. Jacinda 3. Zayn 4. Vanessa But we also have a funny feeling there may be a female winner – so we’re also watching Jacinda and Vanessa closely. So next week is the BIG ONE – we wish all the contestants good luck and we count down the days till SUNDAY when all will be revealed. Two of our biggest supporters L-Boogie and Noxyrsox (Sharpile girls!) give us their take on this weeks episode and for anyone that missed it, see the press release from Mnet below. L-Boogie How delicious was the penultimate episode of Survivor? Not only are Mzi and Vanessa back in the game, they are now also calling all the shots at Burba. The show started with Lezel making her way to Dead Man’s Island to join Mzi, Vanessa and BBrigitte. Only they were not in the mood to play best chums with her; and gave her one of the coldest receptions ever given to anyone on a reality show. Yummy. Better still and proving that what goes around comes around; Lezel blew her chances of returning to Burba when she was the first person to fall in a challenger that involved standing narrow poles. Mzi and Vanessa stood the test; and shocked the hell out of Zayn, Gareth and Jacinda when they re-joined them for immunity challenged....
Review: James Bond Casino Royale
If you want the version that doesn’t give it away read this one: Brilliant opening scene, cheesy theme song, sexy new Bond Daniel Craig, yukky soppy love scene, too long, could do with an edit of the last stretch, awesome entertainment, probably the best yet. Then if you want the juice – read here…. Thanks to Heineken for the invitation to the Casino Royale preview with all th… e shlebs and media on Friday night at Village walk. Casino Royale was thoroughly enjoyable, with the manificent opening Parkour scene taking your breath away and throwing you straight into the action… the visuals of the chase sweep you up and keep you watching all the way through to a rather soppy love scene right near the end. It is at this point where the audience starts getting a little fidgety and wondering ‘how much longer’ and I am afraid it is just before this point where the movie should have ended. But it didn’t and you go on to see the usual James Bond twist at the end leaving our hottie loveless and lost and you bursting for the loo or a smoke or just to get up. 7 out of 10. But a tighter edit would have kept it sweet. Daniel Craig makes a fine Bond although he lacks the ‘slick n slimey’ Bond factor and has more of a ‘heavy macho’ side to him than previous Bonds. His pout and piercing blue eyes can get a little intense as well. Eva Green (or Evergreen) is sexy and sultry, keeping the boys happy. After the movie we were invited to (our not so favourite club) Moloko – it was a pleasure getting there early and being able to find space to sit and feel welcome (as opposed to walking in on a heaving room of strangers with no room to move). The catering was brilliant with NY style chinese take-away boxes and lots of yummy delights. The bar was flowing and service was attentive. Editorista was introduced to the joys of poker and found herself addicted almost instantaneously. Thank heavens the chips were plastic or she’d have to work the dance floor for money like one or two young ladies appeared to be doing. Great to see some of our friends at the event -David Kau looking suave in white, Sibu Shangasi the “Red Bull” man friendly as always, Lebo looking luscious and Melanie looking gorgeous (you know who you are girls), Mike from JHB Live enjoying the snacks, super smooth Simphiwe our favourite Swazi boy (call me) and Monique taking over the dance floor. Definitely worth watching. But...
DOUBLE REVIEW! Ain’t Misbehavin @ the Market
Editorista got a little mixed up with dates and sent TWO reviewers to the Market Theatre to check out the musical Ain’t Misbehavin… The best part about this review is that one of the ladies is an accomplished musical theatre performer and the other is a big fan of musical theatre…which means they each had a very different POV. Thanks to Heather and Debs for your reviews – check out what they … had to say: THE LISTENER – HEATHER I have to start this review with a confession. I am tone deaf and know nothing of the Harlem Renaissance or Stride Piano. However, I can say that if you are looking for an entertaining, upbeat show to see before this Festive season – check out this chock-full-of-talent production. Most of the songs are instantly recognizable and will have you tapping your toes all along. From the very first number of “Ain’t Misbehavin’ I got that feeling of “this is going to be great” and I wasn’t let down. Some of the artists are known in different capacities such as actors, voice artists, dancers or back-up vocals, but I was amazed at how talented they all are as real, live, singing, dancing, comedic performers. Gillian Bhudal has a fabulous presence and her rendition of “Yacht Club Swing” was a hoot. A highlight of the show for me was Earl Gregory doing the “The Viper’s Reefer Song – somewhat out of the ordinary from the other numbers, but a great performance. An artist to look out for is Molebatsi Lekgetha who has incredible energy and a great voice. The humour in the lyrics is well portrayed by the ensemble and with some of the less recognizable numbers, I would have loved to have had a copy of the lyrics to read. I mean really&.. Who’s that walkin’ round here, Mercy Sounds like baby patter, baby elephant patter thats what I calls it Say up in Harlem at a table for two There were four of us, me, your big feet and you From your ankles up, I’d say you sure look sweet From there down there’s just too much feet Yes, your feets too big Don’t want ya, cause ya feets too big Who else writes such witty lyrics? (I think that if it hadn’t been opening night, the audience would have started to sing along&) The lighting was subtle and complemented the performance very well. I did find the band a bit tucked away and I got the feeling they were a little cramped. It would have been great to see more of the piano player, after all, Fats...
PHOTOS: Morafe and Zola give it some bass @ Bassline
Sorry we’re a week late – long story. But here it is – our review of the Bassline gig and the pics that go with it… Thanks Palesa for Representin’! Click here to see our pics of the event and the peeps that attended. What do you get when you mix kwaito’s super legend and hip hop’s amazing new talent? We… ll a concert by Zola and Morafe of course! Two words describe their performance: Crazed fans! Performing to a full house is probably one of the most exhilarating feelings for any musician, but when the fans know every single word and are screaming it out at the top of their lungs- that has got to be even better! Friday 3 November was the next date for the Edgars Music Series at Bassline in Newtown. MC’s Pabi and Dineo and DJ Nutty Nyce of YFM kept the crowd begging for more. The supporting acts Slice and the Motherland Funk boys Jozi stole the show as Jozi lit up the stage literally with Crazy Lu smoking what looked like a joint on stage, his band mates however were not going to let him upstage them as Bongani Fassie bust a break-dance move and a great beat box, Da Les killed the crowed with his rendition of the ‘Snap yo Finger’ dance and Ishmael supplied the backing vocals- If you’ve never seen a Jozi performance you have missed out on great stage presence. Just as the main acts were about to hit the stage Drencko lept out of the backstage in his tight pink suit and his Nik Nak man hairstyle and got everyone hooting with his single Shaya Ama Hoota driving the crowd insane. This month’s Edgars Music Series definitely did not disappoint and we at Represent look forward to next month’s performances! ============================================= You know our money is on Morafe as the Next Big Thing in hiphop – these boys from Maftown work so hard, combined with their magnetism and talent, it’s going to happen. Catch them while they’re on the up. Big ups to Edgars for their consistency and persitence in supporting local music. Good job! Friday 3 November sees Edgars bringing Zola back to the Bassline to lay down the party law at the Edgars Music Series! Last year, Zola launched his range of custom T-shirts at the Bassline with Edgars and this year, he completes that mission with the accessories and foot wear range. He will be joined on the bill on the 3rd of November by Morafe, Jozi, Slice and DJ Nutty Nyce from Y FM. No Introduction necessary really! “We are proud to once...
PHOTOS: The Beach is back in SOWETO
We’re late – we know – but classic photo’s like these make up for the time! Thanks to Palesa for capturing the spirit and essence that makes us the crazy people we are. Click here for lots of pics of the Beach in Soweto. “Beach in Soweto? Please!” That was one of the comments posted on Represent last… week, and boy could that person not have been more wrong. There was the smell of boerewors gliding through the air, the sounds of giggling girls in cute bikini’s, the rather rough, but sea sand nonetheless right under our Jo’burg feet, the beat of all the newly released festive tracks in the background and the beautiful blue Soweto sky- all in all it was a Saturday afternoon at a real beach party! Old Potch Road (one of the main roads that lead to the heart of Soweto) has seen its fair share of traffic, and this Saturday was one of those days of congestion as everyone from the north to the south made their way to Orlando’s Power Park Dam for the annual Spiced Gold Beach Party. Fashion was at the top of the list in true Jo’burg style as some of the outfits went from funky to weird, camping chairs were occupied by Soweto’s finest sipping on cocktails under bright red umbrellas sprawled across the sand. With top class entertainment by Skwatta Kamp, Jub Jub, Spoko (remember him from Generations?), Malaika, KB, MXO, Sliq Angel, Chippa and Mzambiya, Baphixile, Hidden Force, Chomee, Donald Duck, Psyfo, DJ Fresh, DJ Monde, DJ Fistaz, DJ Mgedeza and sexy Spiced Gold dancers, no one could have asked for more! The Spiced Gold Beach Party has grown in popularity and with the construction of the R1-billion Orlando Ekhaya development, a housing, shopping and entertainment project is already underway at the Power Park Dam the question that is now on everyone’s lips is where will the beach be next year? ============ Oh yes, Summer is nearly here and it’s kicking off it’s season in Soweto. If you’re not taking leave this year and aren’t going to get near a bit of RnR at the ‘strand’, why not go to the Spice Gold Beach party right here in Jozi. We love this project. Captain Morgan Spiced Gold Beach Party 4th and 5th November X Marks the Spot There’s this spot in Orlando, Soweto that’s usually quite calm and tranquil. Called Power Park Dam, it’s a peaceful place, cool in the summer and pretty laidback. But come the weekend of the 4th and 5th of November 2006, X will mark this spot, turning it into a seaside celebration...
BAYETE NKOSI Jabu Khanyile
We don’t want Represent to become an obituary column but it is a sad day when we lose two of our musical greats within a few weeks and the death of Jabu Khanyile is one that cannot go unpublished. Jabu Khanyile has always been one of Editorista’s favourite African musicians – her good friend Pamela Nkosi worked closely with his band Bayete in the late 90’s and so Edi spent lots of time at concert… s and hanging with the band. He was also one of the first public figures we knew of with two wives which was interesting to observe. Sadly Jabu Khanyile passed away this weekend after suffering from cancer and diabetes at his home in Soweto. The saddest part about this is that we only find out about his illness once he is gone (unless we missed previous press on this). Jabu was a magnetic and powerful live performer and his music is enjoyed by people all over the world, with many world music lovers including him in their Top 10 list of world musicians. Jabu you will be missed but your music will keep your talent and messages alive. Our condolences to all the fans, friends and family during this difficult time. Click here for the full story from IOL: The death of Kora Award winning singer and songwriter Jabu Khanyile has shattered the local music industry. Khanyile, 49, died at his Dobsonville, Soweto, home on Saturday night after losing a battle to prostate cancer. It is only two weeks since singer Lebo Mathosa died. Lindelani Mkhize, of LME Entertainment, the record company that worked with Khanyile said he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and had been undergoing radiation therapy for the past five months. He also suffered from diabetes. Mkhize said Khanyile’s last performance was in July in Germany during the World Cup handover. According to Mkhize the singer died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Khanyile was married to Phindy Dlamini and Khululiwe Sithole and had seven children. At the time of his death, Khanyile was working on a new album through which, Mkhize said, he had hoped to educate men about cancer. Khanyile was born in Mofolo, Soweto. At the age of 14, he joined a group called The Daffodils as a guitarist. He shot to fame in the 80s as the leading vocalist of the Afro-fusion band, Bayete, whose hits include Mbube and Mbombela. After he went solo he released a total of eight albums, the first being Mmalo-We in 1993. “Why are we losing our musicians like this? It is terrible,” was Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s reaction. Singer...
