Do you both use the net or does one of you feel left out? He has had hundreds of responses from couples all over the world… makes for interesting reading! Click here for his site. Well worth a...

ROLY STRUCKMEYER – far too modest!

We have known Roly since our innocent days where we frequented the fabulous Buzz Bar together – or should we say He ran it and we frequented. He being Roly – an extremely modest musician with a voice not unlike the sweetness of Eagle Eyed Cherry and guitar skills to envy. Roly should be a legend in our country – let’s make him one. He’s got a show all to himself by the organisers of Out… For The Nite in Durban – these guys are working hard at resurrecting the vibrancy of the live music scene that rocked Durbs in the 90’s in particular. Big Ups to you! Here it is: Roly Struckmeyer Is Out For The Nite Over the last few decades, a number of names have appeared in the music scene in Durban & some have slowly and quietly faded out of tune while a handful managed to remain sound in the music scene. Amongst that handful of artists, Roly Struckmeyer’s name is mentioned without any hesitancy. Having been a fixture on the music scene in KwaZulu-Natal since the late 80’s, Pietermaritzburg-born acoustic guitarist & vocalist Roly Struckmeyer started playing the guitar at age seven. His music career began when he returned from England in 1989 to form a band known as “House On The Hill.” In the short years of his career as a performer, Roly has toured & performed with names such as Wonderboom and Landscape Prayers. He has also played with a number of amazing bands such as Butternut, The Farryl Purkiss Band & Deluxe to name a few. In 1994, while in America, he played on the Free Stage at a festival in Boulder, Colorado, and was a member of Arapaho for the last year of their career. Roly still remains at the top of his league & will be hosted at Vestige Bistro & Bar corner St. Thomas & Musgrave Road on the 8th of June 2006. The show will resume at 20h30. For more information on the show, please contact Derryn or Clive on 031 201 7767....

Review: HOSTEL – take a friend

It’s been a long time since we went to a movie where someone left because they were too grossed out to watch anymore. But that’s what happened when we went to watch HOSTEL this week. Maybe it’s because there were only about ten of us in the audience… So there was more of a spooky feel. But this young lady just got up and RAN out of the cinema… wh… en we all stood up and left at the end, there she was, patiently waiting outside for her friend, her eyes still dilated from what she had seen. Now we’re no Movie buffs, in fact we are just everyday people that enjoy good stories. HOSTEL has been the first horror in a long time that actually had us SCARED and FREAKED OUT. In our world we found HOSTEL to be extremely graphic and very gory – we warn all sensitve viewers to stay well away. In our opinion, NO TEENAGERS or CHILDREN should see this film – they will be affected for a long time. During our ‘post-chair-gripping’ discussion, there were two points about the film that came out strongly that in our minds made it really horrific for us – 1. One of the guys with us is European – as in he comes from Europe… Now for anyone that has spent time in Europe, you will know that some of the EASTERN EUROPEAN countries like ROMANIA, SLOVAKIA and YUGOSLAVIA are all shrouded in a cloud of poverty, desperation, terror and corruption. Well for those that live in Western Europe anyway. If you think South African’s battle with Xenophobia, you should see how well the Western Europeans do when it comes to their neighbours. HOSTEL plays on these negative attitudes and deep-rooted apprehension about anything EASTERN… So for a Western European, in a sense, it brings your worst nightmares about travelling East to life. We’re sure SLOVAKIA must be p*d off. 2. On that note, there was something about HOSTEL that played on our vulnerability as South Africans. Something about the underground, about dark, depressing crime and criminal activities that gives life to the night-time fears of South Africans. For us the place they found themselves in, with street gangs of kids and where nearly every person looks and feels dangerous could be compared to a night in the dregs of Hillbrow or any other seriously scary ghetto or part of ghetto in SA. We did enjoy the acting – the three ‘tourists’ were such typical naive, spoilt westerners (dare we say AMERIC…) and in a sense their irritating desire to get as much NOOKIE as possible on...

London’s crazy about Johannesburg – We’re hot hot

YEBO! We’ve said it since we started, AFRICA’S TIME IS NOW!!!! In the past, many a South African, particularly those that have ‘immigrated’ to the UK, had a lot of bad things to say about their motherland… disgraceful really. For what is a person without a place of birth, a place to go home to, a sense of belonging…? We can only guess that choosing to cut ties from your l… and of birth must be a soul-destroying action leaving you fairly lost and blue. Especially when you have consciously made the choice and not been forced to leave. Being forced into Exile is an entirely different situation. Of course it is good to be critical and to have an opinion on your country… but some of the damaging ‘urban legends’ spread by South Africans in the UK in the past are unforgivable. THE GOOD NEWS IS – in our opinion, those days are numbered – THE TRUTH WILL OUT – People are tired of reading about negative stuff on South Africa – it’s time to spread the good news! And for once, people in London can believe the HYPE. The rejuvenation of Johannesburg city is a popular topic in many a London newspaper. Represent has even been commissioned to supply content for the South African TIMES based in London. Click here for a story by Editorista on inner city living. Click here for a story by Editorista on what to do in Jozi for a foreigner. This column will be a monthly one so you subscribe to their newsletter…! The latest story on Johannesburg comes from the much-respected GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER in the UK. Focusing on the rejuvenation and soaring property prices, it gives a really positive but fair spin on the recent developments… thanks to author Rory Carroll for his words. Click here for the full story: Boomtown Jo’burg rides the new gold rush With crime down, soaring property prices show scale of city’s regeneration Rory Carroll in Johannesburg Monday April 17, 2006 The Guardian The gold mines are long exhausted but there is a new way to get rich in Johannesburg: property. An economic boom is transforming what was once South Africa’s byword for crime and decay into a vibrant metropolis. Muggers and squatters in the notorious centre are making way for yuppies, loft apartments and renovated skyscrapers in what is one of the world’s fastest-growing property markets. By some estimates the value of real estate has risen 35-fold in six years, an extraordinary surge that outstrips growth rates in Manhattan, London or Sydney. Some developments include platinum-plated taps, rooftop swimming pools and helipads. Popping up like...
