CONHILL exhibit – Sign of the times.
Martine Margole‘s provocative and fun exhibition ‘Signs of the Times‘ is currently on display at the Constitution Hill.
The exhibition takes a look at the good, bad and sometimes ugly aspects of our democracy.
“While the themes that most people are concerned with have tended to take on the serious responsibility of positively slanted nation bui…
lding, this show looks instead at the opportunities democracy has provided to a whole new generation of opportunists and takes a look under the fairy’s tail.” Margoles says of her work.
In her exhibition, Margoles has subverted images drawn from contemporary iconography and symbols that form a part of our familiar visual language.
Through “friendly, everyday comfortable” characters and signs, Margoles presents for question the other side of South Africa’s ‘happily ever after’ transition to freedom, with particular reference to the free market and its effect on society.
Signs of the Times includes pieces on the National Lotto, the burgeoning drug and porn industries, old banks with new faces, and the ‘informal’ industries of car-jacking and theft.
The exhibition closes on June 30 at the The Old Fort’s Temporary Exhibition Space.
