Get down to the BAT centre in Durban

Ah how we miss those late 90’s Friday night Jazz sessions at the BAT centre in Durbs… Vukani remember those??? It’s the perfect place to relax and watch the sunset, watch the ships coming and going and soak in the Durban air. THe last time we were there was a young Jazz band from the University of Natal Jazz school – wow they were awesome and the beers were cold and the food from TransAfricaEx…
press (i think that’s the name) was delicious.

Starting on the 15 March there is a fascinating exhibition entitled Amagugu VII – Treasures Exhibition which features amazing traditional beadwork from hidden tribes and unexplored areas around the country… there is trippy beadwork from the 60’s and 70’s – see this hat in the picture… well worth a visit to celebrate our cultural heritage.

Here’s the PR:
The exhibit is from Wednesday 15 – 25 March 2006.
It will be opened by Yvonne Winters, Senior Museologist, Campbell Collections of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Yvonne Winters will give a talk on the Amagugu VII – Treasures exhibition at
12 noon Saturday 18th March 2006 for The Friends of the Durban Art Gallery
and general public – all are welcome.

The African Art Centre has collected a large amount of beadwork this year.
We also have wooden spoons, milkpails, headrests, imbenge and ceramics. We
have about 1000 pieces on exhibt

The beadwork has been collected from some unexplored areas such as the
Ngxamanga Group of the Eastern Cape and the Xhesimbe Group of the Mount
Ayliff area of KwaZulu-Natal.

From the Eastern Cape we have beadwork from the Fengu, Pedi, Xhosa and Pondo
groups as well as the abovementioned Ngxamanga.

From the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, we have Xhesimbe of mount Ayliff,
Pondomisa, Umkomaas and Port Shepstone areas.

From the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal we have the Swayimani of the New Hanover
area, the Valley of 1000 Hills, Msinga, Vryheid, Estcourt, Bergville,
Njasuthi and Pongola.

We have entire outfits for both men and women from Msinga, Greytown,
Maphumulo, Valley of 100 Hills and Umkomaas areas. This is very interesting
and will be sold as complete outfits.
