IDOLS 3 – Where are they now?
We’re having a little trip down memory lane as we ready the content on Represent for the about-to-be launched “Sleekline Version”… So we’ll be bringing up the past in the next few days… a lot.
Do you remember the gripping of your armchair as you waited for the weekly announcement of who would be kicked ceremoniously out of the IDOLS 3 competition – that was just last year? But with a…
rebellious year like 2006 leaving ’05 so far back in the dust, it’s easy to forget it even happened and you were all over it.
Remember, we all had our favourites, I remember ours were Gift and Karin….towards the end anyway.
But what we’re wondering is “WHERE ARE THEY NOW?” …Maybe we don’t get out enough or perhaps we hang out at the wrong jols. But if our dear readers could fill us in on where they are at… we’d love that. “cause we haven’t heard them on radio in a long time… or is that ever? Where are our awesome IDOLS?

KARIN IS OUR WINNER! CONGRATS GIRL!
Well done to both Gift and Karin – we were rooting more for Gift as we believed he had a better package as an “IDOL” , but Karin sure can sing..and she will be a fabulous addition to the Idols brand – at last.
Rather embarassing were the performances by both the previous winners Anke and Heinz – so boring and flat – Anke looked like a contestant from Survivor that had stepped through the bushes and Heinz, while he gave a fantastic performance was weak on the singing.
Let’s face it, both Gift and Karin put them both to shame.
We wish you all the best – both of you – Gift – learn from ZAMAJOBE and make your shining mark despite not coming first.
KARIN – we can’t wait for your first album – please don’t go cliched on us – keep your originality and Jazz touch.
Well done to the organisers on a good show!

Don’t say we didn’t predict it last week, although some may say it was fairly predictable for anyone that knows a little about music… NOW For the true cruncher – POP IDOL style mixed with a good voice – GIFT or NOT Strictly POP IDOL profile but fantastic voice – KARIN?
Both, in our minds are DESERVING WINNERS – congrats to both of them for getting this far and well done to MNET and the public for fufilling our peoples mandate and for being true to talent… Our bet is no matter which one wins, they will have a HUGE career – way more than Heinz or Anke (no disrespect) ever got near…. That’s cos both Karin and GIft are GREAT VOCALISTS each with an individual style… NICE ONE!
SO who do you think it is?

OOOOhhhh such nail-biting stuff – so happy that our boy GIFT is still in there… sad to see Nhlanhla go but he got a little soppy on us…
So there’s only GIFT KAREN NICKY and V left – we’re going to tell you who we think it is – we think it’s between Karin and Gift – our money is on GIFT…. We dare you to make your mark and tell us who you think it is going to be. Let’s watch and observe these last few weeks!

We were very relieved to see that even though the judging on Sunday may have been suspicious, the public certainly know what they want. Well done to everyone that voted with integrity and chose the best singers as opposed to the best ‘whatever’ legs, hair, face….
The top six are an exciting and dynamic pack and even though last Sunday was a little boring, we believe that they will now start pulling the moves out their sleeves….
Please note that both our boys are still in there!

We have to ask the question – are the judges primed to critique the singers in a specific way in order to influence the voting?
The thought has come up previously, however we have never expressed it on this forum. We heard from a ‘gossip’ media person in-the-know that the latest ‘backstage’ talk is that the organisers think that Nhlanhla may have the voice but he doesn’t have the ‘confident personality’ required to be the type of Idol they want… could that be because he is a little out of his ‘gardener’ depth daar by Mnet?
Judging from the judges (except Mara’s) outright overblown dismissal of his GOOD performance last night, we begin to wonder just what the Idols agenda is. Nhlanhla, in our modest musicians opinion, performed better than all the others last night – we were completely thrown by the judges reaction – particularly Randal who is normally the only honest, fair and musically astute judge – he said “that was not at all good’ or something equally way off kilter.
If Nhlanhla goes tonight you should be ashamed of yourselves judges.
All the other performances were mediocre and as summarised by Gareth, no one moved us.

Update
Well yet again we missed the elimination round on a Monday (blame it on hard work) but we believe that it ended with a real anti-climax when the phone lines in Durban collapsed or something unbelievable like that…
We’re pleased to see that Deidre was one of the two to go ‘coz let’s face it guys, she sang completely out of tune and her goofy appeal is starting to wane… so let’s see if it is her that goes or Mr N.
Nhlanhla – ooosh, better get a little spicey my friend. Gift – stick to what you know best – Karin – uyarocka but you gotta get rid of the ‘old bag’ face and look – get spunky sista. We thought Nicky had a particularly good round and V was so good she was almost boring and Martelise – we think you’re next, after Deidre that is. Deidre – keep being that soulful sista you are. Vasbyt!
Here’s the word from Mnet –
Just as a characteristically nailbiting live Results Show was drawing to another heartbreaking close, Deidre and Nhlanhla were literally saved by the bell. Owing to a Telkom exchange problem in the KZN region, both contestants are safe for one more week in Idols III, making this Monday (24 Oct) the joyous to date this season.
During a post-show press conference, M-Net CEO Glen Marques stated that because of the voting problems experienced in the Durban region coupled with a tight finish between contestants, a tough decision had to be made late Monday afternoon. Ultimately the producers decided that retaining both contestants as opposed to eliminating one based on votes that could have been swung the other way was ”the fairest decision.”
Realising that thousands of votes had been cast by the nation, a decision will be made this week as to whether the votes will be combined into next week’s results or not.
Confirmed by Idols Director Gavin Wratten, either Nhlanhla or Deidre would have been eliminated from Idols III tonight (24 Oct). Commenting on the results, Deidre said, ”I was prepared for the worst, but I was surprisingly calm when I was called up on stage. It just goes to show that you do get second chances and that things have a funny way of working out& All I can say is that you can expect something spectacular from me this Sunday. You may get second chances but you don’t get three!”
Commenting on her performance during Sunday’s Spectacular (23 Oct), Deidre confessed that she had had an incident with Karin which she partly blames for ”emotional instability” before her performance. However, she confirms that relations between her and Karin are ”great” and she holds no hard feelings towards her.
According to unconfirmed sources, Deidre mentioned something about judges’ bias towards contestants after Karin’s performance which Karin overheard and ‘misinterpreted’. The two exchanged words, heightening tension in an already emotionally charged and constricted environment.
Before her performance on stage, Karin apologised to Deidre, who was upset. During the press conference, Deidre commented that the Top 8 are a family and that ”even friends can fight”. Both admit to feeling no ill will or jealousy towards each other and confirm that things have been ironed out.
While Idols may be able to breathe a sigh of relief, it is temporary: Marques confirmed that two will be eliminated next Monday (31 Oct). He also stated that changing the format of the Results Show owing to voting problems is not a precedent for problems experienced in the future. ”We have broadcast many reality TV shows and have encountered numerous voting problems. However, the tight finish forced us to make a decision we felt was the lesser of two evils.”
In defence of complaints from viewers about ”wasting money”, Marques stated that they are prepared for a barrage of calls, yet predicted that they would have received more had they eliminated a contestant based on incomplete votes.

UPDATE
We missed the show this week (although we watched the eliminations last night) so one of our fabulous readers Nix sent in her ten cents. Keep those comments coming:
So last night’ Idols results show was a bit nerve-wracking, and I guess that’s how it’s going to continue to be from now until the end.
It’s so hard when you see peeps like Nhlanhla and Karin, who have come from such humble beginnings and who want the success so badly – not because they neccessarily want to be stars but because they want a better life – placed in the same category as silly, way-too young wannabes like Nicky or Deidre.
You want them so badly to be the winners because you can see the determination and the effort in their songs, and because they are really, really good. Some of the young girls have been inconsistent (like Kesha – we think she deserved to go) whereas Karin, Nhlanhla, Gift, V and Martelise and Ayanda have continued to improve week on week. Their performances on Sunday were by far their best, proving that all of them are pure talent.
Unfortunately there can be only one winner, but I hope that the amazing vocal abilities of these fine young, funky south africans is snapped up in a shot when they’re voted off. We need young, black popstars, and all one had to do on Sunday was take a look at the screaming fans of all races when Gift and the likes sang. Wow. This idols has definitely been a great improvement on past ones so far.
But crunch time is here…will the fact that Idols is on M-Net, discourage certain citizens from voting? Will it become a popularity contest instead of a talent contest? We can hope for the best, and hope that the voters can actually identify talent when it hits them in the face. If all else fails, lets hope the Idols exposure will mean that we see some great new singers on the scene.

11 October
We are so into this years IDOLS and with the TOP 9 to go, we decided to put our money where our mouths are and cite our projections.
Firstly, we’re sorry Phume had to go, but singing a ROXETTE song was her biggest mistake yet, Roxette is not cool Phume, they are tres gross in fact. Anyway her voice and style was a little bland at times although we love her new hairdo. She’ll make it big on her own. Watch her space.
Our money is on one of the Black brothers winning – Nhlanhla or Gift – let’s face it, they’re both the strongest singers and performers and it’s about time MNET did something that resonates with the new South Africa.
Last year’s winner Anke was a disastrous choice, more than likely politically motivated and supported by the old school viewership, but look at how ZAMA JOBE has outshone her. Well it’s not hard when Anke hardly flickered. Who wrote that crappy song by the way – Silver Lining? Talk about dressing lamb as mutton…
We like Karen a lot – great tone and so refreshing to hear a non-Phume warble – but she doesnt have the SPARK to be a POP Idol. Both Nicci and Deidre are cute and sexy, we love their personalities but they’re just not as strong singers as the boys. V has a fantastic voice and a good chance of making it to the top three, but she also needs to groove up a bit.
We’ll be kept glued to our screens over the next few weeks – we challenge you, predict your winners now in our comments section! Click here for the site – You will have to sign in.
