An Illuminating History of Dorp

Way back in the dusts of time, circa 1996, a gang of old School friends got together in Somerset West to create the then Boere-Ska band that was to become known as Dorp.

This entity spent seven years developing a reputation for infectious, totally mad live shows and released three albums and an EP in South Arica, before deciding that the great wide world out there was calling their name. And in 2000 they left for the UK and London town to try their hand at cracking the UK music industry.

But London is harsh town and the pressures of the business took their toll, with members leaving and joining and the band working really hard to make things work. For a time, they became almost invisible. But they hadn’t given up and they certainly hadn’t stopped playing. Now in 2007 Dorp is afresh new band with four members firmly entrenched in the line-up, playing an indie rock-pop hybrid that is rooted in groove, power and humour.

All the hard work of the ten plus years of the bands existence has coalesced in the course of 2006 and 2007 to bring Dorp their biggest impact in the UK market, and some of the best music they have written to date.

The single Simon Says, released in April 2006 gained airplay on X FM, Kiss Fm and on Kerrang radio. This was a nice start, but hardly the wave they were looking for. However in October 2006, the band released the track London Out There complete with a video. The song was played on both Radio 1 on the BBC and X FM, and was very well received. In South Africa it is charting on 5 FM right now. The video caused a huge storm online all over the globe, with an enormous amount of plays being recorded in the two months it was available. The same video has also been receiving extensive airplay here in South Africa on MK 89.

Dorp is a band that has done the hard miles, they have slogged it out, adapted, changed and grown. They are all but unrecognisable from the Somerset West starting unit to the lean mean London outfit that is progressing so fast now. Their story has been along one, but also a rewarding and developing one. Now they stand in mid 2007, ready to re-conquer South Africa, and with their feet firmly through the door of the music business in the UK. This is a story that is far from over. And while it may have begun some time ago, in certain key ways, this part of the story is a beginning: a beginning of big things.
