The show is simply titled: ‘blank projects: selected work 2005 – 2007’. This exhibition will run concurrently with the Gugulective show . Work by the following artists will be showcased: Nomthunzi Mashalaba, Pierre Fouche, Kerim Seiler, Abrie Fourie/Ella Ziegler, Christian Nerf/Douglas Gimberg, Gabi Ngcobo, Jackson Hlungwani and Barend de Wet. What is Gugulective? Gugulective is an artist collective made up of eight members at present. The name Gugulective derives from the Xhosa word for pride (gugu). Although founded and developed in Gugulethu in 2006, artists from Langa and Khayelitsha have joined the group in the meantime. Due to a number of organisational and financial obstacles, the collective could only take up its practical work in the form of creative projects this year. Two exhibitions were put together in Gugulethu as well as a painting workshop with the local youth. Gugulective is clearly not aiming at reactionary intervention, but is born out of the need for creative projects in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Art is seen as a means to promote development and create social cohesion within communities. Unfortunately, it is often neglected when crime and economic troubles are prevalent in everyday life. Many township schools for instance do not teach art any longer, and extracurricular activities in this field are largely lacking, too. To date, their work have been realised in Gugulethu. Untitled is a group exhibition working in and with the blank projects space to create work which will create a conversation between two locations (blank projects in Cape Town and Kwa Mlamli in Gugulethu). The installation piece will consist of tables and chairs taken from Mlami’s shebeen and installed at blank projects. Along with the chairs and tables, items of clothing will be installed. “We aim to challenge the pre-conceived visual representation of shebeens in institutional and gallery spaces. In recent years, the shebeen has been portrayed as a negative and loud space, covered with wall paper, filled with people sitting on beer crates and lacking aesthetics and recreational values. This piece is symbolic of absence in many ways: the absence of black artists and audience in gallery spaces, and also the fact that mobility structures hinder accessibility...
Hair and Carpentry @ Blank
We’ve often spoken about the unusual exhibits at BLANK projects in the Bo-Kaap gallery, Cape Town. The next month features two interesting offerings, first up Gabi Ngcobo’s exhibit featuring her and others hair (!) and then Douglas Gimberg and Christian Nerf invite you to join them in dismantling traditional wooden scupltures! See below: Unwel’olude is artist and curator Gabi Ngcobo’s second solo exhibition. Unwelo’olude is a Zulu saying which translates literally as “may your hair grow longer”. The hair in the saying makes reference to life. The saying is articulated as a well-wisher to someone, usually on their birthday or when they have performed an outstanding deed. It means “long live” or “viva”. The exhibition features works made of Ngcobo’s own hair as well as hair sourced from her friends and family. With this exhibition past, present and future become intertwined. The work is riddled by contradictions that reveal a sense of hope and confusion. Closes: 3 August *************************** OPENING at blank projects: Wednesday 8 August 18h00 Douglas Gimberg and Christian Nerf present CARPENTRY 101. The artists will be attempting to dismantle traditional wooden sculptures, you are welcome to join them. “We are not perfect.” Gimberg “Sometimes bad people do good things.” Nerf A book will accompany the show with contributions from Ronald Suresh Roberts, Bettina Malcomess, Nuno Sacramento, Robert Sloon, Ed Young, Andrew Lamprecht, Bianca Baldi, Johan Kritzinger, Dan Halter, Lizza Littlewort, Gimberg and Nerf. Opens: August 8 Closes: August 31 blank projects 198 Buitengracht Street, Cape Town Tel: 072 198 9221 Email: blankprojects@gmail.com by...
Represent is loving: Haute Cabriere
We love being South African. So many different kinds of people, cultures, opinions and flavours, life is certainly not dull. For example, you gotta love Cape Townians. Many a dinner party conversation has ventured towards the mystical Mountain and beaches of the fairest Cape, the topics ranging from Khayelitsha to Claremont. But one question that seems to always do the rounds is about the people. What is it about Cape Townians that makes them so different from Joburgers? What is it that differentiates us? Why do we feel like such distant cousins? Why do their houses seem better designed, their restaurants more sexy, their lifestyles more appealing, their fashion more edgy? What is it that makes us so different? “Money”, ‘they’ would surely quip, referring to the fact that Jozi peeps actually work for a living and blerrie hard at that. “Ambition”, we would reply, continuing our earnest struggle up the corporate ladder. “Black Diamonds” a Capie would say referring to the annoying new label; “Black People” a cheeky Jozite would reply causing much spluttering and coughing. We can and have spun the debate in many directions and sometimes it gets tiresome in its predictability, but today we’re not interested in fauna, flora, politics or wealth as a differentiator. Today we’re going with WINE and we’re sticking to it. Yip, you heard right, VINO, WINE, PLONK, WYN, TASSIES…. Hear us out. We only know about 4 or 5 Capies in Jozi and everytime we’re in their company, our lips are moistened by the most delicious of fermented grapes. No graca, JC or Johannesburger for them, WINE is like a fine art form for a Cape Townian and as much as Joburgers covet freedom of expression, small business and BEE, Cape Townians worship their Wine. Now obviously CT has a varied population and we’re stereo-typing here and some wine-worshipping is not so fortunate, but has anyone else noticed their general affinity for the good tipple in life? “Some of our best friends are from Cape Town” and we will be forever grateful to them for sharing some of their hushhush WINE secrets with us. The whole point of this article is to venerate the wonderful Cape creation that is HAUTE CABRIERE… Tasted it yet? It’s been gracing a number of our little weekend shindigs in recent months and it’s delicious flavour and composition is unforgettable. We love it so much we decided to look it up on the net and we found http://www.cabriere.co.za/ that confirms our argument above as they describe wine as “the mystical synergy between sun, soil, vine and man…” We can highly recommend the Chardonnay Pinot Noir, with it’s unmistakable touch of magical pink, it’s delicious with any meal...
Pink coming to SA!
At last, one of our favourite pop artists Pink is on her way to perform in South Africa – wish she was playing at Live Earth. Sorry Durbanites it’s only Jozi, Sun City and CT for now. It’s going to be a fabulous Spring. We can’t wait. Yay!!! Pink “I’m not Dead Tour” Proudly presented by Sony Ericsson and 5fm in association with MTN, PINK’s first ever SA tour, kicks off at the Sun City Superbowl on the 8th, before heading to the Coca Cola Dome in Joburg on the 9th, and finally the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town, on the 11th of September 2007. The multi-Grammy Award winning, multi-platinum selling PINK, recently shattered Australian songbird, Kylie Minogue’s home record as the female artist to sell the most concert tickets in an Australian arena tour. She played 36 sell out concerts in Australia/NZ gigs to more than 310,000 fans, breaking 3 building attendance records, and beating Minogue’s previous record of 20 concerts to 215,000 fans during her 2006 Showgirl Homecoming Tour. PINK and her band are set to put on a powerful, hit-packed show with all her signature brash and in-your-face flare, whipped up with her unique blend of soulful funk punk-pop rock and roll! “To have such a distinguished musical influence associated with Sony Ericsson’s music proposition through our Walkman® mobile phone range will further strengthen our commitment and drive on music for us and our partner, MTN”, said Sonja Shear, Head of Marketing for Sony Ericsson, Southern Africa. Shear continued, “Our decision to sponsor Pink’s ‘I’m Not Dead’ Tour, allows us the opportunity to bring the best in music entertainment to South Africa. We will be releasing our rose red W660i handset in addition to our black and orange W880i, and funky pink Z310i clamshell handset exclusively through MTN.” 5FM Station Manager Helen Graham said “Pink is the archetypal 5FM artist – widely popular but with an edge that has kept her interesting longer than many of her contemporaries in the pop genre. We’re very excited to bring her live show to our listeners, who have kept her recorded work in our charts for many years now”. Alastair Roper Sports and Promotions Executive for Sun International, has this to add, ”It’s an honour to welcome PINK to Sun City as she joins the list of Grammy award winning artists that have performed in the world renowned Sun City Superbowl.” PINK has become one of the most enigmatic pop stars around, after gaining prominence in 2000, with her first record, Can’t Take Me Home, which boasted worldwide sales of over 4 million copies. PINK then collaborated with Christina...
