Art in the Cape
We’ve promised to bring you news about different things happening in different provinces (other than Gauteng), so here’s something interesting to do if you’re in Cape Town. I love art galleries, they are just so fascinating, having been to the Goodman Gallery here, I would without a doubt recommend a visit to the new gallery opening up in Cape Town… To launch the Goodman Gallery Cape in Fairweather House, 176 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, gallerist Linda Givon has invited 21 of the country’s foremost artists to participate in its inaugural exhibitions. The first “Lift Off” exhibition launched the new Goodman Gallery premises in Johannesburg a decade ago in 1997, and in keeping with tradition most of the original artists are represented again. The first exhibition of Goodman Gallery Cape with artists Willie Bester, Norman Catherine, Kendell Geers, David Goldblatt, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge, Kagiso Pat Mautloa, Sam Nhlengethwa, Penny Siopis and Sue Williamson opens on Thursday 22 March 2007 at 18:00. As the new space can not accommodate all the artists Goodman represents, “Lift Off” is being presented in two parts. The second “Lift Off” exhibition runs from 5 May to 26 May 2007. Designed by award-winning architect, Jeremy Rose, from Mashabane Rose Architects, Goodman Gallery Cape is located within the exciting and rapidly developing East City precinct of Cape Town. Situated in a mid-20th century industrial building, the minimal and elegant gallery space created by Rose is tailored to display contemporary art at its optimum, whilst retaining the integrity of the original structure’s interior, in particular its spectacular vaulted ceiling. In architect Jeremy Rose’s words, “the gallery provides an understatement of space that is made to serve art”. Rose’s monochromatic gallery design accommodates only one window that consciously frames a spectacular view of Table Mountain. Natural light halos the long walls, while shorter walls roll on wheels to remake the space allowing for maximum flexibility when devising each exhibition. The total effect is one of memorable contrast to the Woodstock industrial and social fabric, exploring the role of art as commentator. The aims of the Goodman Gallery are to promote contemporary art in South Africa and to leave a legacy and a history for our country to enjoy. The gallery has been opened in Woodstock because it borders on District Six which is a symbol of the marginalization of apartheid. This way it can embrace a wide audience and encourage everyone to enjoy and absorb what is on...
Ticket Giveaway: Calling all Capetonians in Jozi!
The organizers are calling this one the party is for ‘ex pats’ to get together and party the way they would if they were back in Cape Town! How is that? You ask yourself as a full time Jozi citizen, well try Funky DJ’s playing good … no, make that great music, some of the best in Ol’ Skool Jazz and R&B hits, a lovely chilled atmosphere and just an all round lekker vibe. We are hooking you up with three double tickets to the party… The idea was originated by a group of tight friends, all originally from Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town who have been living and working in Jozi for the past 4- 8 years. They wanted to revive the warm feeling and goose bumps they (and a whole lot of other Capetonians) got when they heard their favorite old school songs on the radio. When they would scream “this is my song!!!” and got up to do the ‘Bart’ or ‘Spaceboy’ or the infamous ‘Running man’!If you’re thinking “Huh?” then you need to be at this party to learn all of these super cool moves! For one night you can all forget about the hustle and bustle of Jozi’s fast paced lifestyle, forget about worrying what the next one is going to think about your ‘outfit’, the Classique Party is all about a relaxed environment where people can just be who we truly are… Capetonian! Unfortunately, they won’t be bringing the beach with them this time round, but watch this space as the parties will take place monthly, the next one being at the end of March 2007. Who needs the beach anyway when the DJ line up consists of an all Capetonian ensamble of Natano, better known to Capetonians as Nate Dogg, formally from Good Hope FM, Clint the Legend from the legendary Cape Town nightclub The Galaxy and DJ Shaun Harry, who’s taken Jozi by storm in the past three years with his tight sets at clubs like Satala, Taboo and many more around the city. They’ll be bringing the house down with all the best ol’ skool R&B and jazz from the 90’s and just incase you thought you were not invited, Jozi peeps, you too can come along to the vibe (tone it down a notch tho… remember you’ll be in Cape Town for one night only!) This party is the first of its kind, and the organizers are looking forward to it becoming a big hit over here! K-SWISS finals in CT on Fri
The competition has run it’s course and we’re down to 10 finalists who will be showing their customised shoe designs on Fri 8 Dec in Cape Town. We wish them all luck as their work is judged by international graf guru Logan Hicks, Lorne, we’re backing you and Jozi buddy. After a four-month campaign which saw some of SA’s hottest underground artists putting stencil-to-sneaker in t… he K-Spray Custom Kicks initiative, footwear brand K-Swiss has stepped the project up a notch with its announcement of the Top 10 finalists. These creative geniuses will have their customised shoe designs exhibited at the finale event in Cape Town on Friday 8th December, and are the competitive crop from which visiting international street artist Logan Hicks will select the final winner on the night. They are: Motel7 of Cape Town, Nic Lewis a.k.a. The Formidable FINK DaFOE from Durban, Scott Robertson a.k.a. Dirty Sanchez of Durban, Paul ‘Senyol’ Loynes of Cape Town, Nick Herbert of Cape Town, Wes Van Eeden of Durban, design collective Love and Hate of Pretoria, Lorne Schnugh of Johannesburg, Rowan Toselli a.k.a. PS of Johannesburg and Shayne Walker a.k.a. Rist One of Cape Town. The ten artists have emerged from a wide range of backgrounds, some hardcore graffiti and street artists with no qualms about ‘bombing’ or ‘tagging’ blank walls or trains, others from more commercially accepted fields like graphic design and advertising, but they have all been brought together by the common desire to be acknowledged for work in a largely frowned upon medium of choice. All ten artists were among hundreds who responded to the call from K-Swiss months ago to use a blank white K-Swiss Clymar as the ultimate canvas, with a variety of stencils and paints transforming the shoes into serious eye candy. Finalist Nic Lewis, 27, said that for him graffiti was a means of escape. “When you look at that wall, it’s all you’re really thinking about. I don’t really express any opinions in my painting, but I do think that graffiti is definitely one of the best ways of putting a message or a point out, also, it’s not about being heard, it’s about being seen.” Rowan Toselli, 18, of Johannesburg adds: “Graffiti and street art are the ultimate way of expressing oneself, as it allows one to incorporate anything, there are no limits to this art form and it is endless.” For others like Nick Herbert, who has been in the graffiti game for the past nine years, the intentions are perhaps less ‘deep’. “I don’t express my opinion through graffiti,” he says, “it’s more something for myself than for...

On the 16th December, thousands of locals, and international tourists, will dance the night away at the party of the year, in the spectacular theme park. Last year, the thousands of party people who attended the extraordinary event voted Ratanga Junction best venue ever for MCQP. Ratanga Junction, situated on the N1 near Canal Walk is a dream venue for a party like MCQP. Its proximity to town makes it accessible, and yet it has the capacity and space that many in town facilities cannot offer. Parking is plentiful; party revelers are safe and shielded from weather and wind which has plagued the event in years gone by; and the theme park has an atmosphere of magical creativity, which makes a gay theme party come alive. Parking is safe and abundant and surrounds the venue. All the facilities one needs are close at hand: from food to public phones, cash machines to conveniently situated ablutions, and there are facilities for disabled persons. The Mother City Queer Project is a costume party of epic proportions that attracts a wide variety of people from all walks of life and from every major continent around the world. Costume design starts months in advance with many people going to great lengths to design fantastic creations. The theme is just the starting point for some wild and wonderful costumes. The event itself is a dance party infused with live bands, interesting acts as well as a variety of top DJ’s playing 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and current musical beats across several dance floors on Ratanga’s island complex. Since its takeover last year, party organisers have invested time, money and energy into this colourful brand with the objective of turning it into a festival of celebration and excitement. For the first time in its 13-year history, MCQP presents the official after party, COMIC STRIPPED, that is scheduled to take place in the De Waterkant Village on 17th December. All the dýcor and entertainment elements of the main party will be incorporated into the after party as well as additional surprises that remain to be...
