Mother City Queer Project strips down

We’ve heard all about the fabulara MCQP aka MotherCityQueerProject but never got to experience the hedonistic delights of this event that draws thousands of guests from all over the world… Cape Town’s must do event of the year – we wish all the holiday makers luck as this years event takes place at Ratanga Junction in peak holiday season the 1… 6 December ’06.: In a strategic coup, MCQP organisers are thrilled to announce they have secured the most popular MCQP venue ever – Ratanga Junction for this year’s party, COMIC STRIP! On the 16th December, thousands of locals, and international tourists, will dance the night away at the party of the year, in the spectacular theme park. Last year, the thousands of party people who attended the extraordinary event voted Ratanga Junction best venue ever for MCQP. Ratanga Junction, situated on the N1 near Canal Walk is a dream venue for a party like MCQP. Its proximity to town makes it accessible, and yet it has the capacity and space that many in town facilities cannot offer. Parking is plentiful; party revelers are safe and shielded from weather and wind which has plagued the event in years gone by; and the theme park has an atmosphere of magical creativity, which makes a gay theme party come alive. Parking is safe and abundant and surrounds the venue. All the facilities one needs are close at hand: from food to public phones, cash machines to conveniently situated ablutions, and there are facilities for disabled persons. The Mother City Queer Project is a costume party of epic proportions that attracts a wide variety of people from all walks of life and from every major continent around the world. Costume design starts months in advance with many people going to great lengths to design fantastic creations. The theme is just the starting point for some wild and wonderful costumes. The event itself is a dance party infused with live bands, interesting acts as well as a variety of top DJ’s playing 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and current musical beats across several dance floors on Ratanga’s island complex. Since its takeover last year, party organisers have invested time, money and energy into this colourful brand with the objective of turning it into a festival of celebration and excitement. For the first time in its 13-year history, MCQP presents the official after party, COMIC STRIPPED, that is scheduled to take place in the De Waterkant Village on 17th December. All the dýcor and entertainment elements of the main party will be incorporated into the after party as well as additional surprises that remain to be...

Represent DIARY: MY FIVE SENSES OF JOZI CITY

As you all know the city of Johannesburg is alive and kicking, as developers continue to finish off their buildings and plans, more and more working people are moving into the heart of the city to live in slick accommodation. Represent has sent one of it’s writers, Sisiwami, to give living in the inner city a bash, over the next few weeks and months, she will be documenting her stay in th… e inner city of Johannesburg. Scroll down for updates. See our Flickr pics here. October 2006 Do you know that at night you can hear the sea in Joburg city? It rocks and sways you as if your body were adrift on an ocean, quietly gliding you through midnight and gently into dawn. You can only hear it once the phuza-face stragglers have settled down to a restless sleep in a doorway, once the garbage collection trucks have stopped clunking and the glow of the office blocks fades into the backdrop of a pulsating night. It’s the late-night soothing sound of the united rhythms of city air conditioners and generators, colluding to form a constant hum and drone that washes over your thoughts as you concede to the comfort of Johannesburg blackness. And yet all too soon it is gone. Replaced with the daily discord of a teenage city coming to life, coming into itself, finding its feet for another grueling day. It is with sadness that my sojourn in the city has come to an end but it is through my 5 senses that I shall always be able to zoom back to this time of change and excitement. “I can’t believe you’re leaving us already” laments our favourite security guard, “it won’t be the same without you.” And my life will never be the same since the successful city seduction that wrapped me up in a disjointed world for 6 months leaving me lustful and longing for more. It was an all-embracing sensual seduction, her curves, her lines, her shape, her strength constantly captivating my eye – I found myself looking up, up and away, looking here, there and everywhere where she reigns and moves – her visual superiority holding court over the province, the nation, the continent. Fumbling and humbled, I tried to capture her light, her colour and her changing moods, but no picture nor words can do her presence justice. A cold lift door, a warm spring wood, hot summer glass, smooth cool steel, rugged high walls, soft new carpet, slippery wide screed – her textures call out for your hands to stroke, to feel, to hold onto. Layers of life, layers...

ROLY STRUCKMEYER – far too modest!

We have known Roly since our innocent days where we frequented the fabulous Buzz Bar together – or should we say He ran it and we frequented. He being Roly – an extremely modest musician with a voice not unlike the sweetness of Eagle Eyed Cherry and guitar skills to envy. Roly should be a legend in our country – let’s make him one. He’s got a show all to himself by the organisers of Out… For The Nite in Durban – these guys are working hard at resurrecting the vibrancy of the live music scene that rocked Durbs in the 90’s in particular. Big Ups to you! Here it is: Roly Struckmeyer Is Out For The Nite Over the last few decades, a number of names have appeared in the music scene in Durban & some have slowly and quietly faded out of tune while a handful managed to remain sound in the music scene. Amongst that handful of artists, Roly Struckmeyer’s name is mentioned without any hesitancy. Having been a fixture on the music scene in KwaZulu-Natal since the late 80’s, Pietermaritzburg-born acoustic guitarist & vocalist Roly Struckmeyer started playing the guitar at age seven. His music career began when he returned from England in 1989 to form a band known as “House On The Hill.” In the short years of his career as a performer, Roly has toured & performed with names such as Wonderboom and Landscape Prayers. He has also played with a number of amazing bands such as Butternut, The Farryl Purkiss Band & Deluxe to name a few. In 1994, while in America, he played on the Free Stage at a festival in Boulder, Colorado, and was a member of Arapaho for the last year of their career. Roly still remains at the top of his league & will be hosted at Vestige Bistro & Bar corner St. Thomas & Musgrave Road on the 8th of June 2006. The show will resume at 20h30.
