Joburg youth give JAY-Z their vote
Check out our pics of the concert on Flickr here. You know we’re not big on the dome as a concert venue, but last night was the first time that we saw it packed to almost capacity, it’s true colours finally shining through as a well organised and smooth flowing event venue. Jay-Z gave a sterling pe… rformance to the thousands of young, younger and really young fans packing out the dome and getting down. Fashion, hair, diversity, colour, dancemoves, electric vibes, the Jozi youth gave their vote to jigga as their favourite MC as they sang along to every lyric of every song, most of which were not commercial hits. We were so proud of our ecclectic, loud, proud and beautiful young Joburg people who certainly know just how to Represent in their very own way! We dig you guys and are behind your mission 100%. HipHop had a heydey in the parking lot as well as boot parties, street parties and any old sommer party thumped on through the night for those who weren’t inside the concert. The forefathers of Northgate shopping centre were probably turning in their graves as the youth of the now gave the finger to suburbia and rocked the night ghetto style. Jay-Z was tight, with a simple stage layout and awesome central screen, it felt good not to do the neck straining thing to the side screens for a change and even though the place was packed out, it was spacey, chilled and fabulous. We missed Rihanna, on purpose, so we can’t tell you ’bout her. But as far as the ‘Hov went….as my friend Lerato put it: “Super Awesome.” Tell us about your concert experience – leave a comment! ************************************************************************** We’re just reminding you that JAY-Z is here in less than two weeks… So if you ain’t got your tickets yet, best you hurry! Before we get to the serious part of this article, did you know that on the London leg of Jay-Z’s tour NAS jumped onto stage with him? MTV tells us that NAS was hinting at joining Jay-Z on the African part of his tour – so NAS fans – get buying too! Who knows who could be jumping onto the stage. Where do we start with Nas he has a lot going on. Last week, he jumped onstage with Jay-Z in London and said he might join Hov for more stops on the Global Express Tour. MTV gives us the lowdown: Nas onstage in London “There are some conversations me and Jay are having about doing some more tour dates,” Nas said last week in the...
Lerato and Andre get their BEYONCE photo
You have to love two of our favourite South African entertainment journalists ever Andre and Lerato. They are good friends of Represent and we absolutely love their determination and spirit. They were convinced BEYONCE aka Bouncy would be here with Jay-Z and they were determined to see her. Well, they found her and got their pic. You go guys, Represent loves you. ONG>Here are their stories: Andre: “Attending a Jay-Z press conference is mega exciting, but something inside me said there’s more! And boy, was my instinct right! We followed Jay-Z out of the venue and saw his car driving up the road within the actual premises. The only place he would go is the Polo Lounge which is well-known for its celebs hanging there during intervals. So when we were told we weren’t allowed inside the usually public lounge, we knew he was inside. His entire crew had already left, so who was keeping him company? Was it Rihanna? Was Beyonce chilling out there while the press conference was going on? So after waiting almost an hour, a gorgeous Beyonce Knowles walked out with her man, Jay-Z. We were SPEECHLESS. Although security were trying to get rid of us, Beyonce was completely chilled and an utter darling. She could see we were desperate fans and took the time to pose with us while Jay-Z refused and got into the car. So while the media were all hyped about Jay-Z, we got an exclusive first glimpse of Beyonce- even better! No sign of Rihanna though. Looks like Bouncy isn’t letting her man out of her sight! You go girl!” Lerato: “This picture proves that Andre and I are the biggest and most successful chasers of all time in South Africa, and while the rest of the nation was wondering if Beyonce is indeed in the country with Jay-Z, we found out where he was staying, how long he’d be there for and what his posse was doing at the moment that he was giving a press interview. Turns out they were chilling at their hotel waiting for Jay-Z, head to the airport to catch a private plane out to Cape Town. Well, we asked him if we could have a picture taken with him, he said “No” and we thought we’d stalk him just so he understands that we know his every move and, most importantly, not afraid of his security team. An hour in the sun later, Jay, B and their two bodyguards checked out of the hotel. We became Beyonce crazy, told her how much we loved and her begged to take a picture with her. Her...

Aunties get ready, the Leverts are coming to town!
And Aunties you know who you are – you were already in love in the ’80s – pillow-dancing up a storm in your lounge to the O’Jays when no one was looking, dreaming of tall dark strangers… So get your old love jones faces on, put those rollers in the hair and book your tickets to this Father-And-Son Affair. That’s right, two generations to go gaga over. Soul music fans are being given an early … festive season bonanza with news that Eddie and Gerald Levert are heading for South Africa. The father and son will be in the country for just two nights – showcasing their soulful R&B for music fans at Carnival City in Boksburg on October 29th and 31st. Promoter, T.Musicman, has secured the two singers for these rare performances on African soil. Says General Manager, Mantwa Chinoamadi, “We are thrilled that both Eddie and Gerald are coming to perform here. For years, fans have been asking for this double-bill and we finally have secured the two dates, which I have no doubt will make many of their fans extremely happy.” The arrival of the Leverts in South Africa brings a living legend and a contemporary hit-maker to our shores. Eddie was the lead singer of legendary R&B group, The O’Jays, bringing into its musical mix a voice that’s nothing short of memorable. On albums like ‘So Full of Love’, Eddie proved capable of handling emotion-filled ballads, upbeat dance-floor fillers and socially-conscious songs with ease. Over decades in the music industry Eddie has also proved his mettle as a songwriter, co-writing many songs for the O’Jays and other artists including “Just Another Lonely Night,” and “Wind Beneath My Wings,” a duet between Eddie and Gerald. Gerald was always destined to be a singer of substance. While still a teenager he joined with brother Sean and friend Marc Gordon to form the soul group LeVert and, after one independent release, signed with Atlantic Records in 1985. Boasting a voice that is uncannily like his father’s distinctive, growling baritone, Gerald’s group soon earned a top five placing on the Billboard charts with their Atlantic debut single, ‘Casanova’. Like his father, Gerald soon proved an intuitive and successful songwriter, penning and co-penning a string of Soul hits including the number one songs ‘My Forever Love’, ‘Just Coolin’ and ‘Baby I’m Ready’. As a solo artist since 1991, Gerald has carved a niche as a performer and singer capable of bringing soul straight back into the contemporary era earning a vast fanbase with a slew of albums and working with the likes of Patti LaBelle, Toland Adams and Keith Sweat,...
