JHB Fashion Week Spring/Summer announced
We’re a little bewildered with the number of Fashion weeks around the country, however the point is that every one of them showcases our homegrown fashion designers and the awesome talent that abounds, fueling the industry and bringing much needed exposure and support. August 2007 features the first Spring/Summer collections to be held in Jozi, straight after the CT one – let’s hope the week will include exposure for those less-established, up-and-coming designers – let’s watch this space: Exciting newcomers, David Tlale, Thabani Mavundla, Craig Jacobs and Thula Sindi are set to show at the launch day of the inaugural Joburg Fashion Week Spring Summer Collections, fresh from their triumphant showcase at Paris Couture Week. Their C’est Couture collections will be returning from Paris to hit the South African catwalk on the opening day of Joburg Fashion Week. The City of Johannesburg has become headline sponsor of Joburg Fashion Week spring/summer, which will be held at Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton City from the 22nd to 25th August. Audi will remain as annual sponsor of the autumn/winter event, Audi Joburg Fashion Week. Both events provide designers from across South Africa with a world-class platform to showcase collections to an audience of buyers, media and the public. “At African Fashion International (AFI) we pride ourselves on presenting many of South Africa’s most respected fashion designers. Joburg Fashion Week provides a world-class stage from which our leading designers can conduct business and show the world their unique African designs. We believe this new event will help position local designers to compete more effectively in what is an increasingly fast moving and global marketplace. The leadership of our best designers will ultimately inspire other designers and add further fuel to our creative economy” said Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe. Joburg Fashion Week spring/summer will feature some of South Africa’s foremost design talent including fashion doyenne Marianne Fassler, Sun Goddess, Jenni Button for Philosophy, Kluk CGdT, Hip Hop, Habits, couturier Spero Villioti, Sonwabile Ndamase, Fred Eboka, Craig Port and Gavin Rajah, who also returns from Paris Couture Week. The week follows sister event, Cape Town Fashion Week, held two weeks before Johannesburg Fashion Week. The link between the two events gives South Africa’s leading designers the flexibility, for the first time, to showcase spring/summer collections in the country’s two key fashion business districts for both fashion seasons via African Fashion International events. “The City of Johannesburg is proud to announce our support for this important event. As the business heart of South Africa, Johannesburg represents an essential market for the fashion industry and we believe this event will provide a significant and strategic boost for the creative economy of South Africa,” said Councilor...

Represent Review: Blackbird
Wow, sounds like we have a realtime replacement for our addiction to the 24 series. Thanks to Representah John for the review, in summary: “This one is for the hard core theatre goers – leave Granny at home!” If you have the mettle for a violent and graphic theatre show, get to Blackbird at the Market Theatre. Blackbird Market Theatre – Laager Theatre 13 July – 19 August 2007 Blackbird is a thought provoking and explosive play from acclaimed Scottish playwright David Harrower. Fifteen years ago, Ray and Una had a relationship, which devastated their lives and the lives of the people around them. Since then Ray has moved on. He has a new life, a new identity. He didn’t think he could be found. Una has thought of little else but finding him and on discovering where Ray is, sets out to find him with shattering consequences. What evolves is a compelling but uncomfortable drama that encapsulates the unresolved, misshapen, emotional mess that might accompany any suddenly interrupted relationship, legal or otherwise. REPRESENT REVIEW: We visited the Market theatre on Wednesday evening to witness a play by the acclaimed Scottish playwright David Harrower. The cast was British and I was really looking forward to seeing “Blackbird”. I didn’t know what to expect so I sat back and watched in anticipation. The stage was littered with trash and half eaten burgers. It looked like a canteen slash pigsty. People were looking through the sand blasted windows of the set creating a weird feeling every time I noticed them. The lights dimmed and the two main characters appeared. A man, late fifties, and a woman in her late twenties. Both had strong British accents. For fifteen minutes we were totally baffled. We could feel the tension on stage but were at a loss as to what was going on. The man was visibly shaken. The younger woman was constantly attacking him verbally. Then the bombshell dropped. I’m not going to spoil the plot for you, but suffice to say it was one of the most unexpected twists I’ve ever experienced on a stage. This play is definitely not for the timid or faint of heart. It is an hour and fifteen minutes of a continuous emotional rollercoaster ride. The language was graphic and some of the physical fight sequences were very disturbing – though some members of the audience had a chuckle. Maybe they are used to more violence than me… The ending is sad and tragic – but I expected as much after realizing the plot. There are no winners in this story. This is not a typical night...
Buy the Flying Saucer House for R14m
We’ve always got one eye on the property market, it’s in our blood. And so we were delighted to stumble upon the Flying Saucer house on the Private Property website, a regular hangout for us. It’s so rare to be able to peep into these weird and wonderful mansions, so here’s your chance (although they don’t show it all). At 14 million rond for a circular 650m pozzie featuring only 3 bedrooms but 4 bathrooms and incredible views, it’s a steal! We’ll be putting our offer in shortly 😉 ENTERING THE NEW MILLENNIUM!! While driving along the Witwatersrand mountain range on the outskirts of Johannesburg, Gauteng in South Africa, you will suddenly encounter a “real” FLYING SAUCER. This unique structure is situated at a lookout point on the Witwatersrand mountain range, running through the Roodepoort suburb of Kloofendal in the Gauteng province of the RSA. This structure, which is a private residence, is characterized by long elliptic lines formed by an uninterrupted window line that slants outwards at an angle of 60º. The very distinct aerodynamic shape with its elliptic centre dome is a stark contrast with the immediate environment. However, through a 320º view in all four wind directions over the mountain range, it establishes a balance between the fauna and flora and the development of the modern man. Approaching the “flying saucer” the enormity of its 650sqm cantilevered floor overshadows you, as you are overcome by the majestic power of ingenuity of the creator as his vision and skill turned into reality. The project commenced in 1991 and was completed in 1992. The house is based on eight columns with a ring-beam on top, keeping it in place. There are three garages, servants’ quarters with a bathroom and kitchen. The garage has its own workshop-area with toilet and hand-basin, and there is an outside toilet with a hand-basin for the gardener. The upper floor supported from the ring-beam with sixteen beams across the 550sqm floor. The diameter of the floor slab is 28m. A 100sqm tropical atrium lends privacy to the bedrooms. There are three en suite double bedrooms, each fitted with its own private bathroom. The study is also fitted with its own private bathroom and can easily be converted into a guest unit. The tropical atrium receives its natural sunlight through a 100sqm skylight dome, which also provides light into the entire open-space designed environment. The skylight is the largest dome erected over an indoor garden in a private residence. The billiard room and the Jacuzzi area are fitted with a ladies bar overlooking the north facing greenbelt environment towards OT Airport in the distance. All rooms...
