Jozi Comedy Festival

It sounds like a largely international comedy festival to us as we fail to spot many local names although it looks like the Cool Runnings Comedy Showdown sessions continue to rock and form a part of the festival. If you’re up for a laugh, get to the Jozi Comedy festival… in previous years, Cape Town hosted the International Comedy Festival but this year Johannesburg will take its turn to present the broadest selection of comedy styles and material ever seen at such an event. The Festival, which will run over seven days, will consist of an international stand up theatre show – the “UN Comedy Show”, international comedy short films – “Funny Shorts”, international street performers from Canada, the UK and Australia in “Street Comedy”; a local stand-up competition – “Comedy Showdown”, and the much awaited Air Guitar Competition – “Hot-Air”. The UN Comedy Show will be hosted by international comedy icon, Paul Rodriguez (Mexico/USA). Paul’s career spans more than two decades and includes starring roles and featured appearances in over 30 films like “The Whoopee Boys”, “Ali” and “Crocodile Dundee” and countless television series and specials. He has performed live to well over one million concert goers and is considered to be the Richard Pryor of original comedy – with a Latin twist. He will be joined on stage by comedy heavy weight Sugar Sammy (India/Canada) who has been voted the number one stand-up comedian for the last three years in Canada and who’s performed to more than 10,000 fans during his previous tour to South Africa. Comedy legend Carl Barron (Australia), the biggest selling comic in Australia and Paul Zerdin (England) who is considered one of the most versatile performers and ventriloquists of our time will share the spotlight with funny man Frank Spadone (Italy/Canada) who performed his one man show to sold-out crowds in Canada and the US as well as Bobby Lee (Korea) who has garnered millions of fans through his comedy, film and television appearances. South Africa’s rising star Trevor Noah will complete the 5-star line-up. The UN Comedy Show carries an age restriction of 16. Funny Shorts, 90 minutes of the world’s funniest short films, will take comedy to the screens at Montecasino’s Nu Metro Cinema during the festival. A cast of internationally acclaimed street performers will be showing Jozi crowds that laughter is indeed an international currency when they take comedy to the streets around The Montecasino Piazza for Street Comedy. Shows, with content suitable for all ages, will be between 30 to 40 minutes long and a total of 30 shows will be performed over the seven day period. The ultimate...

Represent Review: Pro (kid) and Jus Dat

The Matrix is back… and like a fine smooth wine, the Matrix’s reviews just make you want more. Matrix for President! Check out his Represent Photo Story of the night unfolding here. It’s Friday night and you find yourself confronted with two choices; go home and call it a day or hop around town looking for some fun. What do you do? You freaking well get off that couch, drop the remote control and hit any if not all party scenes very, very hard! So, it’s Friday June 20th and after a short-lived period of serious introspection and self-discovery; the Matrix decided to take you in his confidence and go on a renewed conquest to capture and immortalize those special moments in Jozi’s social night life (xenophobia banished to the depths of Hades and all) which make you want to scream, kick, rant and shout for yet another round! To true party hoppers and the fervent whiskey/ bourbon connoisseur; Jack Daniels hardly tops the list of flagship “A – list” party sponsors, but hey beggars were never afforded the luxury nor the prerogative of exercising individual choices right? Although that dethroned French queen once suggested that they can but for one day be fed tons of well baked cake! I wonder where she got that idea from… Anyhow; moving along…, maybe it was the setting of the Jack Daniels Presents PRO (kid) and Jus Dat! Rap Unwrapped event which made me abandon my somewhat redundant hibernation for the thrill of night life again (or was it the enticement of Tennessee’s whiskey/ bourbon splashing all over my tongue the entire night?…How I wished!), whatever it was, it surely did a darn good job because right now; my craving for an active social night life has never been this sky—high! THE EVENT At first glance, the sheer size of Milpark`s Rocka Lounge does not look the type to stage any hip-hop event (with its first impressions leaving a lot to be desired) and let alone the venue’s capability to handle the rowdiness of the sort of hip (excuse the pun!) crowd which Hip-Hop tends to attract. However to my absolute bedazzlement; the venue`s capacity was perfectly suited and equally conducive to an enjoyable evening in secluded comfort and acute serenity. And the cherry on top? The beautiful women (especially the ONE xhosanova! O ya ndi thethisa sana!!) After what seemed to be a never ending repertoire of familiar dance-floor tunes, two in-house Disc Jockeys propelled the atmosphere from a somewhat relaxed mood to one that just said: “Get up and shake that thing till something breaks loose!” However, in my opinion...

Say ‘no’ to inner-city grime

Let’s face it: litter is not cool. And in a bid to reclaim Joburg’s inner-city streets, the city is hosting the Slam Da Trash Festival on Saturday, 28 June 2008, featuring a feast of basketball, hip-hop, dance and street theatre. This day-long bash takes place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, from 10am to 6pm. Entrance is free to all, and spectators are welcome. The City of Johannesburg’s Region F recently launched an educational campaign titled It’s My Inner City – Let’s Keep It Clean, and the Slam Da Trash Festival forms part of this initiative. The concept is based on Newtown Battlegrounds, an ongoing project of the Newtown Management District. The event aims to bring the youth back into the inner city and provide a platform for them to showcase their talents, while promoting the message of a clean city they can be proud of. “Sport and culture are powerful ways of galvanising people into action, and we believe that creating a high-energy, positive environment around stimulating activities will help reinforce a can-do attitude among the city’s young people,” says Shaun O’Shea Manager: Communications, Marketing & Tourism Promotion City of Johannesburg: Region F (Greater Inner City). “It’s healthy and wholesome fun, and it’s showing our youth that looking after our environment and keeping our city’s streets clean is in everyone’s best interests.” The Slam Da Trash Festival, MC’d by YFM’s Lee Kasumba, promises a non-stop mix of open-air action and entertainment. In addition to basketball clinics for budding slam-dunkers, the day’s main event will be a thrill-packed basketball match between the two giants of basketball’s League of Pros (LOP): Egoli Magic and Wits Alumni. Hip-hop heads are well catered for, with ‘krump’ dance clinics, an electrifying hip-hop dance battle, and performances by ProKid and JR. And be sure not to miss the educational and imaginative street theatre performances in between all the day’s other festivities. The monthly Zasekhaya Market will also be taking place on Mary Fitzgerald Square on the day, so there will be plenty of refreshments and other arty and crafty wares available as well. Keep it green, keep it clean and head along to Slam Da Trash and root for your team! Pic courtesy of AirTomo 01 on Flickr...
