There’s only one place to be on February 9th and that’s at JHBLive’s “Hit Me With Music” bash at Carfax celebrating the legendary Bob, Reggae and the Irie life in generaal. Bob Marley, like many fabulous talented groovy party people we know, is an Aquarian born in February, the 8th to be exact, make sure you celebrate Bob and all that he taught us in true Ragga style. Represent! Hit Me With Music is back after a hugely successful show in 2007. It’s a tribute to Bob Marley – a man whose music and lyrics have given hope and inspiration to millions of people around the globe. Marley represents an ideology of freedom, his work touching on both personal liberation and liberation of the African mind and spirit. His lyrics have given hope and inspiration to many. In his spirit, JHBLive introduces the Hit Me With Music Party 2008. This year’s event has a 70’s African Revival theme. The main floor will host live acts, which will stage a tribute to the music of Bob Marley. The Carfax outside area will be transformed into a 70’s-style African shebeen, accompanied by a small market, complete with a selection of mouth-watering West African and Ethiopian cuisine. For those with harder tastes, there will be a ragga-style drum ‘n bass floor to keep your feet grooving all night long. Come join us for a night of inspiration, perspiration and jubilation! Party People is back – Get Amongst in 2008!
The crew at Represent are PROUD to be associated with consistently creative, musical, artistic and just plain crazy events like Party People who we believe have got the formula right. If you didn’t get to Party People in 2007, open your minds, put it in your diary and book a table for dinner and a blast at ROKA for Party People in 08. It’s a fantastic night out and each edition conjures up a memorable and standout performance representing the best of urban entertainment. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Welcome everybody, the Party People staff would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support from last year. Your support truly make the Party People event and brand grow…thus this year the focus is to go nationwide. The Cape Town leg has already kicked of on the 3rd Jan 2008 at Zula on Long Street and was a success and calls for more. Pretoria will see the 1st Party People event on the 5th March 2008 at Tings n’ Times, we’ll keep you informed on that one…oh! There’s also talks of Mozambique in Easter but will get to that one…this months Jhb’s feature is Bianca Williams DJ Kenzhero presents Party People Date: 26 Feb 2008 Venue: Roka Door: R50 Time: 8pm Bianca Williams is a young woman who has been in the hip hop/poetry scene for 8 years. She is an extraordinary poet, rapper and singer. Describing her art as her “inner guide to personal freedom”, she started writing when she was 12 years old – attending poetry and hip hop shows religiously. Having become an avid reader, she fell in love with words and discovered their power to shape all of existence. She believes that “the word is the strongest medium because not only does it speak to the mind, it also speaks to the soul.” She started performing as an emcee before she did as a poet, at cyphers in Ghandi Square and at Le Club. She believes that hip hop served as an unlimited resourced in her life, constantly providing her with challenges and the strength to deal with her own reality. She then started rapping in different venues and became one of the first female emcees that the Jozi hip hop community paid attention to, often being the only female alongside male emcees. She is currently working on her own album which is due for release in June 2008 and is featured on other hip hop projects such as, the Abomrapper II and the Classix compliation albums, also due for release in 2008. An exhibition of recent work by William Kentridge opens on November 10th 2007, at the Goodman Gallery. This exhibition, entitled What Will Come takes its title from the Ghanaian proverb ‘What will come has already come’. Kentridge is renowned for his animated films, drawn and animated using trademark multiple erasure technique, in which he explores the nature of human emotion and memories, and deals with the quest for cultural identity, ingrained history and politics of South Africa, intensely dedicating himself to issues of sight in his work*. Through a series of new drawings, prints, and stereoscopic images that form the basis of What Will Come, Kentridge continues to explore the medium of sight, reflecting his continued concern with optics and the construction of seeing. The exhibition is centered around an eight minute anamorphic film, entitled What will come. This filmic anamorphosis in which images, drawn and animated by Kentridge, assume their proper form only when reflected in a mirrored cylinder positioned at the projection’s centre. This film draws on the idea of the picture puzzle that originated in the sixteenth century. Kentridge translates this play with perception that operates distorted images that can only be deciphered from a certain angle in his film. The technique of cylindrical mirror anamorphosis Kentridge employs is based on a further level of perception. It is not enough to change one’s point of view but a cylindrical mirror is essential to decode the picture, with a certain radius that reflects the distorted image, causing it to ‘straighten’ optically. The production of these images relies on Kentridge’s profound knowledge of mathematical rules and optical foundations*. Get to Night of 1000 Drawings
Wow it’s been a year already since the debut Night of a 1000 Drawings in Jozi. We went along in 06 and found it interesting and worth a visit – it’s always fun to observe all of Jozi’s young edgy arty indie crowd in one space. It’s happening this Thursday night at the gorgeous PRIVATE PRACTICE venue (GO GO GO) and we urge everyone who has an interest in art and doing something meaningful for charity, to pull in.
