Last chance to get your tickets to this year’s Comic’s Choice Awards.
Tickets are almost sold out for The 3rd Annual Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA), which takes place next Saturday night, 24 August at the Teatro at Montecasino. With signature secrecy, the creative team remains tight-lipped about what audiences can expect, other than to say that they are pulling out all the stops to deliver another dynamite production. Taking the format of a hilarious variety show at which six awards are handed out, winners are required to perform seven minutes of stand-up in lieu of an acceptance speech, so those lucky enough to have purchased the few tickets available to the public are in for a treat! Earlier this year, the comedy industry submitted ideas for the sketches that they’d like to perform and the CCA team had the tough time of selecting the best (and funniest) ones to schedule into the show. With fantastic collaborations and a few wildly unlikely appearances, SA’s top comics, budding newcomers, celebs, VIPs and comedy fans will celebrate excellence in comedy on this very special night. This year’s theme, “The Art Of Funny” centers on self-expression and social justice and blends technology, the growing power of social media and urban street art to reshape reality and drive revolution. The show promises to push the boundaries of funny vs. socially acceptable and will have you rolling (and squirming) in your seats. And the nominees are…! Savanna and The CCA’s launch a night of comedy at The Soweto Theatre.
The Soweto Theatre erupted in applause on Tuesday night as 21 new comedians delivered their best performances for South Africa’s comedy industry in an exciting new event launched in the run up to The 3rd Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA’s). The first event of its kind ever, the inaugural Savanna Newcomer’s Showcase surprised everyone with its caliber of raw talent and fresh material and the theatre echoed with wild applause and standing ovations. As the CCA’s is an industry event, the nominees in the Newcomer category are voted for by their peers and not the public, which gave rise to the question “how does the industry know who to vote for if they’ve never seen these Newcomers perform?” Inspired by this insight, Savanna and the CCA team created this developmental initiative to give SA’s budding talent a platform to strut their stuff in front of SA’s finest, in a bid to be selected as one of the four nominees in their category. An event for beginners, no one knew quite how it would turn out, so it takes a brave brand to see the potential in something and back it on the feeling that its simply going to be great! Instead of just sponsoring the awards, Savanna reached out to all registered Newcomers, flew in the out-of-towners and proved that they really are in the trenches with comedy by giving each comedian a five minute slot in one momentous evening hosted by the hilarious Kagiso Lediga. “It was a true sign that SA comedy has come of age, is extremely diverse and world class”, stated a proud Lediga after the show. Garnering massive support from the industry, previous award winners and the country’s iconic talent cheered and jeered with endorsements from the likes of Alyn Adams, Ndumiso Lindi, Lazola Gola, Skhumba Hlophe and Goliath and Goliath. “The crew and the acts all worked out into a fantastic mix. Our gut tells us that we have started something very important in Soweto. Thanks Savanna, you’re building comedy history with us and we are most grateful”, comments John Vlismas, founder of the CCA. Career-defining moments were captured by numerous Tweets from Newcomers throughout the night, such as Eureka Nkese’s “The Showcase was amazing. Performing at the beautiful Soweto Theatre alongside Kagiso Lediga will be an unforgettable experience for me. I felt like a real comedian”, and Newcomer Liam Bento’s “Easily one of the biggest highlights of my comedy career, meeting other comics, getting advice from seasoned comics, amazing venue… Priceless!!!” Newcomer Nicholas Goliath: “Comedy is the future and the Savanna Newcomer’s Showcase proves that the industry is growing in leaps and bounds” Watch the...
Bunny Chow is finally here!
Guys peep this… After we heard about the movie middle of last year we thought it would never arrive but it seems the long awaited Bunny Chow movie is finally here! Well actually it opens in SA on Friday 09 March 2007. Bunny Chow follows the raucous and often ridiculous weekend journey of three black comedians and Cope (Jason Cope), a strange and irritating white guy who latches onto this testosterone fuelled posse. Egos run high and careers are at stake as Kags (Kagiso Lediga) an arrogant womaniser, Yusuf (Joey Rasdien) a devout yet conflicted Muslim and Dave (David Kibuuka) a somewhat innocent and naive Ugandan immigrant with aspirations of making it big embark on a roadtrip to Oppikoppi, South Africa’s biggest annual rock festival. The quartet slip out of their normal lives for a few dusty and increasingly absurd days with hopes of mass debauchery, drugs, rampant sex, true love and conquering the rock stages with their comedy but they get a bit more than they bargained for. Dave has one thing going for him, his car. Kagi and Yusuf (established comedians) need a ride to Oppikoppi (three hours out of Johannesburg) where there will be a stand up comedy stage. Dave overhears them complaining about having to take their cars to the dust bowl, that is Rustenburg in winter and offers them a ride. Kagiso and Yusuf leave for Oppikoppi against the wishes of their long suffering girlfriends who suspect they are just going to the festival to get wild and fornicate with other girls. Their journey is filled with mishaps and funny moments of adventure as they travel through Soweto to buy beer and wors, Kagi is booked to perform and alleviate predominantly white farmers stress from the imminent drought, they stop on the side of the road to relieve themselves and leave Cope on the side of the road and there is even a bit of a twisted love story where Dave falls madly in love with Carla (The Marketing Manager of the festival) a Jewish princess type. The film directed by John Barker and produced by Barker, Kagiso Lediga and Leanne Callanan explores the different characters’ relationships with each other set against a gritty urban Johannesburg and it also tests the agility of relations formed by people from different religions and ethnic groups living and surviving together in a contemporary reality. The controlling idea of the film is about relationships be it friends or lovers, ultimately you choose! Click here to check out the...
