Splashy Fen 2007, more comfy than ever before!
If you’ve not yet made plans for the Easter long weekend, then why not head off to the Southern Drakensberg for the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival from 5 to 9 April. Aside from the great music, with performances by over 70 of the country’s hottest established and up-and-coming artists, there’s also a host of other fun activities to keep you entertained while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. We are giving away *two double tickets*… The most magical and appealing aspects of what is regarded by many as the ‘ultimate outdoor experience’ have always included a tent pitched under the stars and nights around the campfire meeting new, interesting people. This is a big part of what Splashy Fen is all about and festival-goers at this year’s gathering will be totally spoiled for choice when deciding on sleeping arrangements, because facilities are even better and the range of options even wider – four new developments in addition to the already-improved camping sites, hot showers and fragrant loos. Family Campsite First up and in keeping with the emergence of Splashy Fen as a fun-for-all-ages music festival is a cordoned-off family campsite close to the children’s marquee and entertainment zone run by the Ocean View Montessori School. The appeal of this innovation is obvious, and although it will carry a R30 per vehicle surcharge (payable on arrival), it must be remembered that festival admission for Under 12s is free. Demand for this first-come, first-sited convenience is bound to be high, so anyone with a young family and wishing to take advantage of it would be well advised to arrive early. Tent Hotel The second new venture is a slice of semi-luxury in the form of a ‘tent hotel’ offering bed and breakfast plus separate ablution facilities. Each of the 100 spacious, high-quality and lockable tents will have either a double or two single beds complete with linen, but guests must bring their own warm coverings. Alternatively, sleeping bags may be hired at nominal extra cost. Breakfast will be served in the ‘hotel’ marquee, after which guests can make use of an around-the-clock outdoor cooking facility. The price for the entire long weekend from 5 to 9 April is R1 350 per person sharing, which includes festival entry. Bookings and special breakfast requests can be made at http://www.kreefhotel.co.za/. Homes-on-Wheels Yet another new option is the mobile accommodation offered by Rainbow 4X4 and Motorhome Rentals: air-conditioned vehicles fully fitted with fridge/freezer and stove, cooking and eating utensils, bedding, camping furniture and – in the bigger motorhomes – an onboard shower and toilet. A range of prestige vehicles is available at affordable rates...
City’s looking kinda Strange with New Academics
Johannesburg based New Academics launch their debut album, City Of Strange on Friday 16 March 2007 at Zanzibar in Pretoria. If you’re in the mood for what sounds like an eclectic cocktail of sound, then this is where you need to be this Friday. Released and distributed independently, City Of Strange is a moving and compelling compendium of songs. Incorporating all the bands moods, from melancholic straight t funk, right through hip hop infused tunes and hard rocking, Chili Pepper-esque numbers. Like the band it is never just one thing, but rather an exotic melange of sound, emotion and passion that takes the ears and your feet on a convoluted journey. BBC launches new Africa Beyond website
Tuesday 06 March 2007 saw the launch of the new BBC website Africa Beyond celebrating African arts in the UK. Africa Beyond casts its net right across the African continent to illustrate the diverse and complex cultures of the 54 African nations and the Diaspora – in cinema, television, photography, literature, music, architecture, visual art, history, craft, design, performing arts, workshops and debate. The website will be a hub for information, discussion and exploration of African arts, beyond the geographical borders of the continent, and beyond any preconceptions about Africa and its culture. The new site brings under its wing the BBC’s existing music website Africa on your Street, with its interviews, features and CD reviews covering everything from Afrobeat to Hiplife to Mbalax, plus gig listings from across the UK. Coinciding with Ghana’s 50th year of independence there will be a special focus on Ghana’s impact on the UK arts scene over the past 50 years. DJ and music promoter Rita Ray kicks off the new website with her preview of Ghana-related events this year. There’s an interview with playwright Ama Ata Aidoo whose classic play Dilemma of a Ghost will be revived in London later in the year. You can browse a photo gallery of Max Milligan’s extraordinary images of Ghana and read about innovative Ghanaian company Theatre for Change. Coming soon will be features on Ghana’s up-and-coming new writers, and more Ghanaian music from old-style highlife to reggae to hiplife. Africa Beyond carries on the BBC’s African web coverage where the Africa 05 festival left off. Africa 05 left its mark with many high profile events such as Africa Remix at the South Bank, Back to Black at the Whitechapel Gallery and Africa Live at the British Museum, and even incorporating commercial partners such as Time Out, Starbucks and Borders and Books Etc. The Africa Beyond programme will also include live events, including the Word from Africa festival, a week long celebration of African languages which launches on 02 June 2007 with an event at the British Museum featuring musicians, poets and storytellers in the galleries and theatre halls. Further events will be happening in African restaurants around London. Africa Beyond is supported by the BBC and Arts Council with other core partners including inIVA (Institute for International Visual Arts), the British Museum and South Bank...
