Zaki Ibrahim presents Every Opposite.

Zaki Ibrahim presents Every Opposite.

Recently we had the opportunity to interview Canadian-born South African singer/songwriter Zaki Ibrahim. We found out what makes her the ever soulful singer that she is and to our delight, she is one musician you’d want to spend your money on. Here is what Zaki had to say… Zaki, what was it like growing up in Canada? I lived in a small town on Vancouver Island, Canada’s westest coast.  My family seemed very different from the other families on the island. We were a “bi-racial” unit or “multi-racial in many ways, with a very African percussionist and social activist Father, a blond, blue eyed school teacher Mother. We stuck out like a sore thumb.  Different families from different places in the world lived with us at any given time; Korea, Russia, Japan, Nigeria, Jordan, Afganistan and Bask Country. We always had tenants that my parents “hosted” as they emigrated to Canada, as they started programmes through the local College for refugees and families seeking a better life for their children.  Home life was always filled with stories from all corners of the world.  As a teenager, I found it to be the most boring place on earth.  But looking back, it was the bomb. Your dad Zane Ibrahim is a radio legend, what role has he played in you choosing a musical career? He’s always encouraged me to express myself, but has been wary of     encouraging me to sell that expression.  My Dad is very anti consumerism.  He believes in humility and sensibility.  I think as his baby girl, he’s always tried to strengthen me and protect me at the same time.  I think my career choice as a musician was nerve wracking for him as he knew it’s something that flows out of me, but also shows vulnerability.  The day he gave me his stamp of approval was the first time he saw me perform here in South Africa in 2009. About her Career. What motivated you to choose a career in music? I suppose I’ve been motivated most by the encouragement of my peers and found that music began to take over once I gave it a fair chance.  I always felt that I wanted to protect the thing I loved doing most and not depend on it to live just so I could love it forever. What do you think every artist [new/old] should know about the industry you are in? The thing that I’ve found is like with anything in life, there’s something new to learn. Just when you think you know it all, there’s something else to get your teeth into. It’s worth staying open to the...

Represent Recommends: La Traviata

Our very fabulous world traveller, in-house dancer, choreographer and sometime therapist (yeah, we’ve got a biiiig colourful family at Represent and lots of talent!) went to spend some time at the La Traviata open-day rehearsals – she was inspired and loved every minute of it, convinced to get her tutu back on. Elmarie gives you LOTS of reasons why you MUST go to the Ballet in 2008 and specifically to La Traviata by the South African Ballet Theatre, dates and details provided below. Sharpile Elms! (PS – How awesome is that rehearsal studio? I wanna dance there!) “Get high on dance! To say ballet is a dying art form is completely inaccurate! The South African Ballet Theatre company is very much alive. In disbelief? My advice is that you get yourself to their newest performance ‘La Traviata’ opening 15 August. I recently had the privilege of attending an open day rehearsal at their magnificent studios in Jozi; it was uplifting to say the very least. Once again, I felt extremely proud of our South African talent. So! For some divine inspiration treat your mind to a night at the ballet. No one’s asking you to wear the tights, simply turn off the tele’ and indulge in a truly beautiful mood-altering experience. If you’re interested in seeing a perfect machine reveal its existence of a soul then you owe it to yourself to see this dynamic company perform La Traviata. And remember, Live a lot!” www.saballettheatre.co.za   FNB’s La Traviata – The Ballet The Nelson Mandela Stage At The Johannesburg Civic Theatre 15 August – 7 September 2008 A ballet in three Acts With The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Allan Stephenson Twenty two performances of FNB’s La Traviata – the Ballet choreographed by Veronica Paeper. An exquisite story ballet based on the famous opera ‘La Traviata” La Traviata is Cape Town based choreographer Veronica Paeper’s ballet translation of the Verdi opera of the same name. Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, it tells the story of a Parisian courtesan who unexpectedly finds herself in love and loved in the midst of a cynical and frivolous life among the demi-monde of Paris. But it is a love that is destined soon to be shattered on the shoals of family duty and mortal illness. The score is drawn from Verdi’s exquisite opera, especially arranged for ballet. Regarded as one of Paeper’s finest works, La Traviata brings to the stage the tragic story of a dying woman’s last love. La Traviata – The Ballet Saturday 16 August @ 3pm Saturday 16 August @ 8pm (Half-price night) Sunday 17 August @...

Book for a MUMMENSCHANZ treat Now!

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch this legendary theatre group for a taste of their magic as they bring their much-loved performances to South Africa in June and July, watch a Youtube clip here, but otherwise, get booking. MUMMENSCHANZ, the Swiss theatre group described by magician David Copperfield as “truly magical” will be touring South Africa with their visual spectacle of illusion and make-believe in June-July with performances scheduled in Pretoria, Cape Town and Johannesburg. At the 2006 Edinburgh Comedy Festival they were branded with “…more imagination and invention in two or three minutes of a single sketch than many artists have in their whole show…” During their Australian tour in the same year, the Sunday Morning Herald praised the show as “…a dazzling and affecting spectacle…” After more than 30 years of performing, they still get glowing reviews and attract packed houses wherever they perform – be it Australia, Europe, India or the USA. By using everyday objects and materials, such as cardboard boxes, rolls of toilet paper, masking tape, refuse bags, etc., they create ingenious costumes and expressive masks that transform into fascinating and funny creatures on stage. The MUMMENSCHANZ characters portray everyday human situations, effortlessly understood by audiences of all ages and across all cultures. MUMMENSCHANZ started out in the seventies with the goal to create a non-verbal theatrical language that would transcend the traditional barriers of language and culture. They have been hailed as revolutionary in their field, combining masks, mime, movement and lighting to create a unique kind of visual theatre that keeps audiences spell-bound. The masks belong to three different groups: versatile face masks, half-body or full body masks and three-dimensional masks. They achieved their first major success at the Avignon Festival, which led to engagements in Europe and North America. Subsequent tours throughout the seventies and eighties in Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa, South America and Australia including Festivals in Edinburgh, Spoleto, Berlin and Belgrade were met with overwhelming enthusiasm. On Broadway MUMMENSCHANZ defied all expectations. Hailed as “inventive, imaginative and sparkling with wit”, they remained at the Bijou Theatre for a three-year run, becoming a household name, an unprecedented feat for a group whose show does not contain any words or music. Their innovative style of theatrical performance, which inspired many other artists, was now fully recognized by the public and the critics. Film, television and advertisement work followed, bringing the company to an even wider audience. Mummenschanz “3 x 11” will be loved by young and old. See it from 10 -15 June at the SA State Theatre in Pretoria, 17 June – 5 July at the Baxter Theatre...
