YFM adds brains and diversity to the mix
Since Editorista has been back in Jozi we’ve been cruising the dial in our car listening to each radio station’s 2011 voice, wondering who we’ll program into our lives as our 6 radio stations of choice…6 buttons, 6 choices. We can confirm that the 6 this year include, believe it or not, SAFM and 702. Oh yes, there comes a time in your life when your mind gets excited about big people’s talk and you actually feel inclined to get involved in the debate… we’re late starters, better late than never. We need lots of healthy, rigorous debate, it’s what makes a democracy and radio is the ideal seedbed for shaping and influencing an audience. BUT, we still want to know where we can go to get the soulful urban sounds that bring that fuzzy Friday feeling driving on a highway, and we have to say at the moment it’s a tie between YFM and 5FM. What does this mean? It means that 5FM has changed, and that their playlist has softened and souled out – we’re delighted to call it home when there’s no bubblegum playing. And YFM, well they seem to have found a niche, we’ve outgrown them a bit, but we can always switch if there’s no music playing and the conversation is twee for us… Me thinks there is a station missing here somewhere. Between the YFM/5Fm and those other stations for oldies… although we’re still due some timeout listening to MetroFM who’s hovering over 5th place. What are we looking for in a station? Humour, intelligent conversation, an opinion and stance, great music – MOST of which should be homegrown, some nation building in whatever way possible that still entertains – i.e. youth stations through promoting the diversity and creativity of our youngstars and of course, some gossip, but only local. Two things that are going to make us reprogram the dial this year? Bowing down to overseas celebrities who have done NOTHING to achieve their fame and who offer NOTHING to our young society… And stations that play mediocre music and have mediocre opinions and that don’t make every on air second count. We’ve been tracking radio line up changes for years on Represent- I can’t remember which academic said it, but there are more radios than mattresses in South Africa. So anyway, we’re happy to see YFM’s new line up represents the diversity of our youth (Welcome, Bryce) and that they’re bringing in some brains to the line-up (law graduate Zama) … we’re sorry to see the iconic legendary Dj Oskido leaving the stable, but we have no doubt he’ll find a...

5FM seriously shifting gear
Last time we checked spring was not on it’s way, but it seems clear that 5FM are cleaning out their closets and souping up their wardrobe for Autumn. Here’s the new line up: Grant Nash and Anele Mdoda, who have shaken up 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s weekday evenings for over a year with their sassy style, will be moving over to 5FM in April. From 1 April, Grant and Anele will be filling the weekday 12 noon to 3pm slot previously occupied by the F&Martinengo Show. Their easy-going style has proved a hit with Joburg audiences, and they are excited about continuing their successful on-air partnership on a national platform. “My love for radio started with 5FM and clichéd though it may sound, having grown up listening to the likes of Alex Jay, Mark Gillman, Ian F and Sasha, and now having an opportunity to continue the legacy they have created is a real dream come true,” says Grant. Adds Anele, “Radio is a passion for me, and this is an exciting opportunity to make radio – and friends – on a national level. We look forward to being part of the Power of 5.” The hugely popular Gareth Cliff still hosts the essential breakfast show Monday to Fridays; and there will be no more sleeping late for Sasha Martinengo, who goes solo and moves to Elana Afrika’s 9am to 12 noon weekday slot. After newcomers Grant & Anele is the Big Dawg, DJ Fresh who still rules weekday afternoons on 5FM for an extra hour, now from 15h00- 19h00. Completing the new look week day line up is Koula who will step into Nicole’s kitten heels, presenting the 7pm to 10pm show Mondays to Thursdays with Sureshnie Rider taking over the reins of the 10pm to 1pm slot weekdays. But it is 5FM weekends that get a major new facelift! Elana Afrika is taking over the weekend breakfast show between 7am and 10am on Saturdays and Sundays, alongside Ryan O’Connor of Good Hope FM fame, who will also continue to present The Fastlane, his afternoon drive show on Good Hope FM. “It will be like having both a mistress and a wife!” quips Ryan, regarding his dual responsibilities with the two SABC stations. “I’m going to be enjoying the best of both worlds and although I love still chewing the fat with my fellow Capetonians, I’m really looking forward to meeting listeners from all over the country at 5FM.” Breakfast will be funny, frantic and completely fresh. Poppy Ntshongwana will follow on from the new breakfast team on Saturdays with Total Request Live and another newcomer to the station...
