Represent Review: So you think you can Dance
We’re delighted that some of Represent’s fabulara dancer friends: David Matamela, Thabiso, Megan and Elizma are all getting their go on telly, it’s about time these tireless hard-slogging dancers got a glamourous platform to shake their booties, it’s a nice change from the bread-and-butter corporate work they have to do, although they do it so superbly. So… The Matrix was on TV!! Many a follower and busloads of family and friendly supporters turned out in their droves for the live, SABC 1 broadcast of the riveting Teen pop-culture dance competition: So You Think You Can Dance. There’s just something awesome about attending a live event, for starters, while the repertoire of choreographic work is kept at bear-minimum levels, the adrenaline rush in the live environment is forever pumping, ensuring that you miss none of the breath- taking content. This being a family and teens targeted programme, the event coordinator found himself with a mammoth of a task at hand – painstakingly trying to regulate the loud screams and vibrant young energies transcending into the arena (p.s we were trained like Seals in a series of very important drills: when to scream, shout, clap and boo… I wonder if they purposefully ignored training us on how to spot the cue for when to shed a tear at some of the beautiful and emotion-evoking scenes, captivatingly portrayed live on the expansive and well designed stage). Like in other true pop-culture show which has managed to survive the long and treacherous transatlantic journey to land on our ‘color tubes’, a team of villains posing as ‘Duke and his Duchess’ style personalities made-up the expert panel of Judges…Such a snooty bunch this lot!! AND NOW THE PERFORMING ARTS… Those of us who grew up with square eyes from being glued to the indoor square box would surely confess to loving YO-TV (The former version with the Dodo costumed dude who famously exclaimed: Ma’ Cousins!!!) , for many of us the sole purpose of watching was to feed our secret affection of the super-styling babe: Sade! Represent Review: Road to V Launch party
Short, and oh so sweet, that’s the tone that was set at the launch party for the first ever Road to V festival thats taking place in December in South Africa. We’re hoping the heat may still be turned up artist-wise, ‘coz ever since Snoop stood us up at his Joburg concert, we’ve been sulking. He’s cool, but he’s come and gone and we think there’s fresher, edgier artists than Snoop and Maroon 5 for a brand like V. Anyway, let’s see what happens, we’re sure the party will rock either way, as every summer party does. They’re looking for South African bands for the mix – our team Reuben ‘The Matrix’ Malema tells us what you need to do to enter below, as well as what went down at the launch, and photographer Nkateko Siweya shares a photostory of the party with us here : Wednesday night, Melville – Johannesburg. The Brits are here in full force! Well, that’s my view of Sir Richard Branson’s Empire: The Virgin Group. In this case a division of it which resides in leafy Sandton called: Virgin Mobile. This year the Virgin conquest has its eyes firmly set on ZA. A kick-butt and cash flush team made up of Sony Ericsson, Edgars Music Series, MTV and of course, Virgin Mobile will be granting a selected few South African bands (music groups) a chance to share a huge blingin’ stage with Snoop Dogg at the (already UK and USA staged as V Festival) Road to V World Music Concert in Johannesburg on 15th December 2008. The Catch The prospective band/s must upload an MP3 of their well made track on the Virgin mobile website for the scrutiny of the good people at Virgin. Yes, it’s that easy and yes it’s that difficult too, because chances are you may be amongst the selected few and chances are you might not make it at all – but then again if you do not try you may never know, right? So, go right ahead and be a good sport! Take the chance! And what a chance… The biggest prize of all is a guaranteed opportunity to perform at a sequel of the event with some of the world’s greatest musicians in the United Kingdom and the United States of America in 2009. Drum down on Heritage Day
What an opportunity Representers, make sure to catch the Once Off performance at the JAG of master drummer Samson Mudzunga this Heritage Day: Legendary drum-maker Samson Mudzunga will be presenting his latest performance: Fish Drum from Lake Fundudzi. The two-hour performance will incorporate the domba, malende and tshikona dances. During the performance Mudzunga will also re-enact his arrest after an altercation with Venda chiefs. The drum that Mudzunga will be using for this performance is large enough for him to fit inside. The drum was made from wood drawn from the spiritually charged waters of Lake Fundudzi in Limpopo. Samson Mudzunga is a self taught artist who was born near Lake Fundudzi in 1938. He has been exhibiting his work since 1988. Much of his works are based on over-sized drums which he uses during his performances. These drums are also adaptations of traditional drums used during various Venda ceremonies such as initiation rituals. By transforming these drums both in form and conceptually to new and often non-sacral uses, Mudzunga straddles the divide between traditional art and contemporary art. African Dope releases: Moxyland
We love it, an album released to accompany a book. Read all about it, Cape Townians there’s a launch party this weekend at Fiction on the 14th August, see the flyer below. African Dope Publishing proudly presents our debut release – Moxyland the Soundtrack. It’s a 14 track compilation, created as a soundtrack to Lauren Beukes’s cult novel, the futuristic urban thriller Moxyland (Jacana 2008). The compilation is an ill-bient mash with a distinctly Cape Town flavour and a dark, gritty, futuristic edge to reflect the mood of the book, and features artists like The Tone Deaf Junkies, Taxi Violence, The Real Estate Agents, Damn Right, Krushed & Sorted, Mix n Blend, Dank, Mr Gelatine and Jacob Israel. The tracks were compiled and selekta’d by African Dope’s Honeyb and author Lauren Beukes, and mastered by Fletcher @ Krushed & Sorted Studios in Cape Town. All tracks are published by African Dope Publishing (African Dope’s music Publishing company), which publishes songs by a growing number of happening South African composers and artists, and offers music research, clearance and licensing services to the music, film and advertising industries. Represent Review: RnB Women’s Day Concert
At heart, we all know he’s a serious ladies man. Represent’s one and only Reuben “The Matrix” Malema finds a new sidekick and surrounds himself with the wonders of women as he at the Women’s day RnB bash at the Bassline in Johannesburg… See our Flickr photoset here. Sharpile as always Reuben : 21H00 on Friday: 08 August 2008 at Bassline – Newtown, Johannesburg. A fairly cool night for a typical late winter, early spring day in the city of gold. Mr. Nkateko Siweya (My cameraman and the newest member of Matrix Incorporated) joins me on a colourful journey of discovery to celebrate and honor man’s better half: Abafazi. Funny though, that on this journey so full of affection, comfort and lots of happy emotions, Ms. Janica Nhlapo had to purposefully go AWOL on me. Oops, I forgot: she’s enjoying all that is beautiful about being a woman: the early and tender days of her new born baby boy. And yes, Congratulations to her and all the other strong and mild willed women out there who are jealously guarding the fort and by some miraculous wonder when life pits them against all odds, still manage to constantly hoist the torch of humanity ever so high. To this end, yours truly unreservedly salutes you. The venue of the Newtown (Jozi) Celebrates: Women in Arts – R&B concert was warm and very homely. The guest lounge had been decorated with red silk dressing, a scatter of chocolate nibbles and matching white candles. Fresh, crisply clear juice in flute glasses was served together with a helping of bite-size chicken skewers, roast leg of lamb portions, fish cakes, beef burgers, an assortment of mouth-watering sausages and tantalizing sauce-dipped meatballs on “Sterk-Blatjang”. At 21H30 the build-up process was well underway with DJ Franso rearing in a collection of very good house and smooth tunes. A brigade of well adorned ladies started streaming in by the bus loads! The fact was clearly evident that this one was selfishly for the ladies. Ms. Lulu took to the stage to get the live performances off to a very beautiful start; her romantic ballads coupled with her sweet melody were a reminiscent of Mama Letta Mbuli`s “I need you baby”. When the mellow ballads had warmed up the hall; the energetic Busie set the dance floor alight with her paced up performance of popular and very circular jingles; with the naughty (see pictures) Chomie infusing all sorts of excitement upon the outnumbered male part of the audience, while they all sang along to her famous track: Jaiva Sexy!
