Urbo: The Adventures of Pax Afrika
BoingBoing, everyone’s favourite website of wonderful things, features an article on South African kid’s cartoon URBO – according to wikipedia, “URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika is an ongoing science fiction animated television series created by Octagon CSI. It started airing in October 2006. It chronicles the adventures of a gang of teenagers who live in an a futuristic Cape Town, re-named iKapa City, the last known city on the planet, as they fight the evil industrialist overlord Maximilian Malice. Pax Afrika, the son of the missing explorer Zingela Afrika, discovers that he has ancestral powers that allow him to see flashes of the future. Together with his friends, emo mechanic T-Man, hacker girl Keitu, and Una, Malice’s rebellious daughter, Pax plans to find his father and save the city from Malice Industries. But his fate is also tied to the mysterious, hidden city of URBO- an environmental El Dorado located somewhere in the ruins of Africa. SABC3 began airing the first 52 part series on 28th October 2006.” Lauren, the lady that alerted Boingboing to the series, has this to say about URBO: “UPDATE: More info on the show for anyone interested. It’s a sci-fi comedy series (which makes it as much a Star Wars rip-off as South Park, LittleVoice with a smidge of Harry Potter and Futurama in there too). It’s weird and silly and irreverent but we do try to take on big issues relevant to kids. Not, unfortunately youth apathy in politics, which is true of most countries, not just SA, because our target market of 7-11 is a ways away from that. But we have taken on AIDS and why it’s important to take medication as well as eating fruit and veg in an episode when the kids tackle an evil virus monster with a multi-pronged attack. We’ve also done disability, dodgy cell phone videos, acne, celebrity, junk food, the war on terror (really), racism, environmentalism, and now DRM through lunatic plots involving mutant sock monsters, burping apedroids, viciously cute fighting toys, a guy-in-a-bear-suit-in-a-shrimp-suit and the staple prerequisite of any kids’ show: lots of giant robots.” Watch Urbo here: Part 1 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4BopbZ—c Part 2 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nriFS6mHCH4 Part 3 of 3...

It’s starting next week Wed – start placing your bets!!! The secret is out! M-Net has revealed the names of the 16 contestants who will be experiencing hell in paradise in Survivor South Africa: Malaysia. These 16 headstrong Survivors were whisked off to an island in the South China Sea in May this year where they had to do whatever was necessary to endure the harsh elements and outsmart their tribe mates. The current Survivor series was shot over a period of 27 days and starts on M-Net on Wednesday, August 22 at 20:00. There will also be a repeat on M-Net Series on Fridays at 22:00. The contestants come from different walks of life and these larger than life personalities are bound to clash. Whose torch will be extinguished at tribal council? Will the strongest or weakest Survivors go home first? And what will keep them in the game: physical strength or psychological mind games? Mo’nique gives Paris a FAT Chance
While we’re on the topic of new TV shows, and rather than focus on the dreary ‘real world’ on this balmy Mon morn’, let’s amuse ourselves with larger than life comedian and actress Mo’nique and her new reality show FAT CHANCE taking place in Paris. We love it. A bunch of buxom ladies get to hang out and just be their fabulous voluptuous selves with Mo’nique in the French capital, telling their backstories, sharing their lives and celebrating being plus sized . Ultimately the ladies are competing for the title of “Miss F.A.T” , the show features them learning how to strut their booty with the goal of winning the “FAT” beauty pageant. Nice change. Mo’nique’s star continues to rise as her natural talent and exceptional goedspa see her diversifying into all kinds of ventures: “Mo’Nique has become a role model for voluptuous women everywhere, proving that you don’t have to be a size 0 to be sexy and fabulous. Her musings on life are featured in the best-selling book entitled Skinny Women are Evil published by Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. Released in April 2003, the book quickly became a New York Times bestseller. She recently released with co-author Sherri McGee McCovey a follow-up called Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted for Amistad Press, a division of HarperCollins. In addition to Mo’Nique’s F.A.T. Chance: Paris, Mo’Nique is currently hosting the VH1 hit Charm School. Recently Mo’Nique’s stand up comedy special I Coulda Been Your Cellmate aired on Showtime Television. The special was also released on DVD by Salient Media. Mo’Nique is currently shooting the feature film The Better Man opposite Martin Lawrence. ” Check out the show here and search YouTube for clips from the last few...
Idols 2007 – how and where to enter
Yip – it’s another Idols and we’re looking forward to placing our bets. Let’s hope that the judges choose singers who ‘stick’ or whose stars at least rise a little rather than fading miserably into obscurity within moments of taking the crown. If I say Idols who do you think of? My first name is Zamajobe, then after a bit of thought Karen and of course Heinz… If I remember correctly, Zama was a runner up. We’re still disappointed Gift didn’t bag it last time round 🙁 A lot of people we have spoken to about Idols worry that in the face of the mind-blowing talent illustrated on American Idols we may not compete. We disagree, don’t you know music comes from Africa? We have the most amazing talent on this continent – now let’s find some more! Go and sing your hearts out! About that DSTV decoder… Here’s the info: This year it is easier than ever to enter M-Net’s glamorous singing competition and make your dreams come true! Here’s what prospective Idols have to know: No pre-registration: To make the process as easy as possible, there will be no entry forms this year. Contestants simply show up at any of the five audition venues (see below) and sing. Each contestant will be registered at the audition venue and be given a chance to audition. Age: To qualify, contestants have to be at least 16 and no older than 30 as of 22 June, 2007. That means if you turn 31 years old on 22 June, sorry – you’re too old! And if you only turn 16 on 23 June – try again next season! You will need to bring proof of age, such as an I.D. document or a birth certificate. (Sorry, driver’s license doesn’t count.) If you’re under 21, you have to be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian, who will have to sign permission forms. Or you could download the forms from http://www.mnet.co.za/ and have your guardian pre-sign it, then you can come alone. Clothing: It is typically very cold during Idols auditions (especially if you start queuing the night before!) so dress warmly. Dress as creatively as you wish, but remember that no amount of fancy-dress or revealing outfits will distract the judges’ attention from your voice! Singing: The judges want to hear you sing, so by all means bring your guitar if you want to amuse your new friends in the audition queue, but you will not be allowed to accompany yourself during the audition. Auditions: These are the audition dates and venues: Johannesburg: Standard Bank Arena, Saturday, 23 June. Cape Town: The River Club...
