2006 marks the introduction of a new short film-category – VUKA! Short Cuts – to this already very prestigious competition to acknowledge, reward and develop new skills & opportunities for the South African film industry.
VUKA! Short Cuts calls for 2-3 minute short films that are engaging, explorative and have at their heart a social investment message – the emphasis is on the storytelling (fictional narrative). “The short film format is becoming increasingly interesting worldwide with the advent of new media platforms such as mobile phones and Internet,” explains MultiChoice Corporate Affairs General Manager Jackie Rakitla. “VUKA! Short cuts will look for films that have powerful emotive content – the ability to move an audience and tell a story in a very short time”
The Multichoice Vuka! Awards make provision for entries in 2 categories namely “Newcomer & Student entries” and “Professional entries”, with the following awards given in both categories:
Best Overall PSA
Best Director

The MultiChoice VUKA!s have produced over 1000 PSA’s since the start of the competition.
“This is what the MultiChoice VUKA! Awards is about: a competition for both professional filmmakers and newcomers with a burning passion for filmmaking, to produce Public Service Announcement (PSA) that will enrich the lives of the people of South Africa,” says Jackie Rakitla of MultiChoice. !
