PTA/STB: Tassenberg Legends Live Series in March 2009
Tassies is getting it’s shoulder firmly behind South African music with a major sponsorship in March as part of their Tassenberg Legends Live Series in Stellenbosch and Pretoria. Largely featuring popular Afrikaans musicians, the Tassenberg series showcases exclusive acoustic performances by celebrated South African musical artists. We can just imagine the rooiwyn baabelaases. Geniet julle! Audiences can look forward to thrilling live stage acts from Van Coke Kartel on the 10th March at Aandklas in Stellenbosch, and a whole week of performances by renowned artists at the Dorpstraat Theatre for the annual Stellenbosch’ Woordfees. Van Coke Kartel will be toning it down a bit by performing an acoustic show with Francois van Coke on acoustic guitar and vocals, Wynand Myburgh playing an upright bass and Justin Kruger on drums and percussion. Cape Town based indie/rock band Ashtray Electric brings you a fresh new sound that is a tantalizing mixture of foot-tapping beats and a dynamic blend of musical style. Hang out in the BoKaap at the ‘vernissage’ this Wednesday the 4/3/09 of “Sometimes I forget that you exist” an exhibition that will be ‘developing’ over the month of March, ending on the 27th. It’s curated by Trasi Henen and features contributing artists Francis Burger, Sebastian Charilaou, Zipho Dayile, Anja de Klerk, Douglas Gimberg, Mendi Pantsi, Werner Ungerer and Ed Young. The liminal space is where binaries momentarily dissolve, the space in between… Dominant culture is a victim of the Will (after Schopenhauer’s The World as Idea and Representation) and therefore perpetually oscillating between Desire and Ennui. Desire is a state of potentiality. When the desired destination is reached, is this a tragedy? Sometimes I forget that you exist is a collaborative research project around desire and the heterotopia. Participants are asked to engage with the above dialectic. The exhibition process is ongoing, and contingent, culminating in a closing event. In the two weeks leading up the exhibition, blank becomes the research studio which opens the project to dialogue and interventions. The Black Light Theatre of Prague is bringing Life is Life, its madcap ultra-violet cartoon spectacular, to Johannesburg in March, giving audiences a mind-altering visual treat that will be hard to forget. This acclaimed “cartoon theatre” show from the Czech Republic will be staged at the University of Johannesburg’s Arts Centre from 18 to 22 March 2009, for five shows only. František Kratochvil’s Black Light Theatre of Prague features a 10-member company from the Divaldo Metro, based in Prague, which is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and culture-rich cities in the world. Using simple graphic lines, created with special ultra-violet light effects, Life is Life engages and challenges the imagination for 90 minutes, astounding, surprising and delighting with its ingenuity. A single line can become a chair, a car, a cloud or a horse – without using a single word, the Black Theatre performers magic up a wonderland of poetry, humour and irony. The show has its origins in the “black cabinet” tradition, which involves characters dressed in black moving against a black background and therefore becoming imperceptible to the human eye. Among Czech theatre practitioners, this illusionist practice has evolved into an artform that strives to express messages in an unusual way. Recognising the potential of the black cabinet technique, sculptor and graphic designer František Kratochvil incorporated drawing with comedy to free the line of its creator and take on a life and personality of its own. The result is cartoon theatre – a non-verbal form of stage craft that enchants children and adults, intellectuals and ordinary people in search of out-of-the-ordinary entertainment. If you loved the quirky Swiss illusionists Mummenschanz at the same venue last year, chances are the interactive animations, dance and pantomime of Life is Life will be right up your alley.
