Represent Review: Audi Joburg Fashion Week ’09

Our darling site was in the middle of being made over in preparation for it’s 4th birthday, but our boy Vincent Zondo still managed to put on his best and shmooze out at this years Audi Joburg Fashion Week. Represent! He’s put together a few overall thoughts around the beginning and end of the experience with a few clear pointers for all those wondering What to Wear…! Merci VZ… The BEGINNING of Audi Joburg Fashion Week ’09. This year presented us with a surprisingly killer start to the Audi Joburg fashion week…everyone and their ami was taken aback by the level of the designers and the craft at this opening evening. Typically the start of the shows is always quite chilled, nothing to write home about but I must say – the show unfolded smoothly as the designers went all out to impress. And impressed we were. This first show confirmed that the “New Generation”  South African designers are ‘so’ on par with Global trends, the same chic – gothic look, the never-dying lace that we saw with Prada recently. I must concur that “they really made it their own”, as put by Marie Claire’s fashion fundi, Abigail. The theme this winter seems to be black, black and more black – from the fabulous head pieces, (and draping) and black stockings, black distressed metallic ponchos and jackets and bit of glitter with diamond diamante details by the waist side. I am truly excited and so looking forward to the upcoming season of glam-chic and already willing just one special black number for me… The END of the hottest fashion week Last weeks Audi Joburg’s fashion week certainly lived up to it’s promise to dazzle and make a lasting impression on all buyers, fashionistas and media alike. The designers that were showing their winter/autumn collections have definitely raised the bar this time around. Global appeal What I always do yearly as I meet and greet my fellow fashionistas, is look out for new faces especially on the front row seats – it’s quite exciting to see that a number of international buyers from Switzerland, Paris and London are taking a keen interest in our designers. – the experience – Fashion week is starting to feel like, well….FASHION WEEK – with creativity, function and aesthetic-appeal at an all-time high. The co-ordination by the organizers has also picked up a notch or two. Good job. For example I loved the fact that you got to view the collection on the models as they were gliding off the ramp and in a blink of an eye, we were able to get an up-close...

Fashion Week: Dazzling Gavin Rajah

The Audi Joburg Fashion Week launching South Africa’s first Autumn/Winter fashion week, was a great success and who better to close off the event than the man himself, Gavin Rajah. After successfully showing his range at the Paris Fashion Week last month, Gavin Rajah brought the collection back to the origin, Africa! And as his reputation precedes him, he did nothing less than dazzle the audience. Using luxurious silks and lace the Gavin Rajah collection is comprised of colourful eclectic/ oriental flowing gowns that seem to wrap themselves effortlessly on a woman’s body. His use of hosiery added a tantalizing twist to all the outfits Not only is Gavin Rajah a talented designer (fashion and jewelry) but he is an extremely active philanthropist. Fashion week: Colour coded by Darkie

Darkie’s youthful and innovative collection of denims, T-Shirts, women’s shirts, dresses and jackets is really funky and totally edgy. Zips and funky stylish detail added the extra zing that made this collection much more than wearable clothing. The dynamic collection gives off that ‘taking it easy’ feel. Darkie models pushed the bar by wearing goggles and the signature Darkie afro comb in their hair. The range was a complete extension of the Darkie philosophy of celebrating and enjoying being Darkies. Click here to see photos from the show. Fashion Week: “Vukani Madoda Sekusile!”

Bold colours, vibrancy and Africanism were the main elements of the Vukani Fashions collection. Famous for the design of the “Madiba shirt” back in 1990 Sonwabile Ndamase has been making bold statements ever since. Also, you know those really hot sexy outfits that the SABC ‘Top Sport’ presenters wear? That’s Vukani! Vince checked out the show… The collection by Vukani was very bold with lots of blacks and whites in the beginning making up a collection that I would classify as office wear with a delicious twist. Playful but well designed men’s and women’s denim jackets got the crowd excited and hot polka dot dresses, jacket and skirt seemed to be the order of the day. This collection is a real beauty but definitely not for the faint hearted as you need a bit of boldness to pull some of these off! Colourful silk dresses with trails made a huge entry I just loved the green & white dress with Ndebele beads! Click here to see photos from the show. Vince was there…   The collection included beautiful evening wear and a ready-to-wear range comprising of skirts and dresses that redefined African Couture, classic combination of luxurious browns and chocolate colors as well gorgeous denim dresses with stunning bead finishing’s. The fabulous leather skirts and jackets added a different feel to the Sun Goddess look. Long luxurious beads, brown belts, bold clutch bag were a pleasant surprise and a great addition to this winter’s accessories. A standing ovation put a stamp of approval on the collection.
