Happy Mondays are back – Sunset music @ UJ

When we get PR on the sundowner concerts it means summertime is nigh… So get down to Free Classical Music Mondays at the University of Johannesburg and chill out at the end of a long Monday you know where to go for some violins, opera, piano, clarinet etc … They are free!

Concerts are at the University of Johannesburg Art Centre, Kingsway Ca…
mpus, Auckland Park. The concert starts at 5:30pm and there is no charge for them.

Monday 2 October
Pieter Jacobs is one of the leading concert pianists in Gauteng. For this concert he teams up with one of the leading violinists – Piet Koornhof. Don’t miss it!

Monday 9 October
Diarise this concert! The outstanding UJ Kingsway Choir will be on stage, lead by Renette Bouwer and Sedumo Jacobs.

Monday 16 October
Olga Tsihelashvili (piano) has not performed in a Sundowner Concert yet. Come and listen to a recital that promises to be very special.

Monday 23 October
Master of early music, John Coulter will be presenting a programme called Mozart and Friends on the forte piano. Don’t miss it!

Monday 30 October
A very special concert with Helen Vosloo playing four of the Mozart flute quartets.

Monday 6 November
Pianist Pieter van Zyl enthralled the audience earlier in the year with his sensitive interpretation of especially Chopin. This is going to be another great performance.

Monday 13 November
Malaný Hofemeyr-Burger (flute) and Pieter van Zyl (piano) are both outstanding musicians and have a longstanding musical relationship. Don’t miss this concert.

Monday 20 November
Zanta Hofmeyr is still one of the most outstanding violinists in South Africa, and with her regular partner Malcolm Nay (piano) they form an outstanding ensemble. It is always a joy to listen to them.

Monday 27 November
Last concert of the year, and who better to bring the musical year to a close than the brilliant pianist, Pieter Jacobs. See you all there!

This is going to be outstanding. Hanlie Stapela (soprano) and Denver Smith (baritone) with some of the great opera duets.

Monday 29 May
Whatever you do, don’t miss this performance of Beethoven’s ‘Ghost Trio’ by the Trio Con Brio, comprising Miro Tchakarian (violin), Susan Mouton (cello) and Annalien Ball (piano).

They’re back… MONDAY evening concerts at the University of Johannesburg! What a fine way to turn a blue Monday around: end it off with a chilled out session of world class classical music.

SUNDOWNER CONCERTS – July to August 2005
Concerts start at 17:30, and until the completion of the University of Johannesburg Arts Centre in October 2005 they will take place in the UJ Art Gallery, B5 Building, Kingsway Campus, Auckland Park.

Monday 18 July
This is going to be an exceptional performance: the master accordion player Sergio Zampolli and wonderful harpist Amarillie Ackerman will be the artists.

Monday 25 July
Here is a concert not to miss! Marimba player Magda de Vries and guitarist David Houghton will be making some outstanding music.

Monday 1 August
Always exciting and beautiful – a recital by Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Malcolm Nay (piano). Come early for a good seat.

Monday 8 August
No concert due to public holiday

Monday 15 August
This is going to be a sell-out – come early for a good seat for the performance of ‘African Baroque’ by a five person ensemble lead by the great jazz pianist, Wessel van Rensburg.

Monday 22 August
After a few years abroad we are very fortunate to have the violinist Johanna Roos back in Gauteng. In this performance she will be playing with Berthine van Schoor (cello) and Annalien Ball (piano).

Monday 29 August
Make a special note of this performance, as numerous people have already enquired when the phenomenal Korean teenager, Seyun Kwon (violin) will appear at the Sundowner Concerts. This is you chance! He will be playing with Anneke Lamont (piano).

It has been a number of years since we have been able to welcome pianist Hanlie Martens back in South Africa. Don’t miss this concert that forms part of a short South African tour in which she will be accompanying the renowned baritone, Alfred Hoermayer.

Monday 18 April

Etienne Malan (clarinet), Carel Henn (cello) and Annika Burke (piano) will be playing two wonderful works * the Piano Trios by Glinka and Brahms.
