Carfax in Newtown comes to life at night with the numerous ROCK and FUNK bands that cause a rumble in da area rehearsing till all hours of the night… Little do they know that their music is the inspiration for the Sithole boys of moving and shaking fashion label EARTHQUAKE . They all share the Carfax space sweating out their ideas till the wee hours…they’re showing their range this weekend at the CASKADE party – check dem out.

EARTHQUAKE belongs to John and Sam Sithole, third generation Swazi fashionistas representing Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. Clothing runs in their blood, their Umkhulu aka Grandfather started the family trend back in the day as a salesman of tracksuits and jerseys – he plied his trade to the men in the Nicefield Hostel in Orlando, Soweto and further afield in Carltonville and Westonaria. Then their Malume aka Uncle runs a successful clothing company in Mpum’s – he showed them the ropes and taught them many tricks of the trade…

Sam took the plunge first, going straight from matric to WITS TECH where he studied a 3 year Clothing Management course – younger brother John was inspired and decided to do the same when he matriculated a year later… They both spent time working for well-known label STRANGELOVE, who they call their BEST FRIENDS, as well as other ventures… but they finally decided to go on their own and launched EARTHQUAKE in July 2004.

Right now they’re dressing lots of ROCKSTARS including PLUM, MISERY CHORD and members of PESHEYA – all Carfax bands. We spoke to the boys about what turns them on:

Why Carfax John?
Because it’s an arty place, its also a business place. The management of Carfax really appreciates what we do and supports us – they sponsor our workspace and take good care of us – Sasha and Malcolm from Carfax have done so much for us. Big ups to them!

Sam: We actually made the shirts for the Carfax bouncers and we’ve also made clothes for a few other companies within the Carfax space.
Chris from CUT post production and Chino aka George aka CREATION have helped us out so much too, they designed our logo, stationary, letterheads and helped us get on our feet – they’ve been like real brothers.

The boys have a staff of 4 who worked tirelessly through the nights and weekends in preperation for their debut showing of their range at the Caskade concert last week – they showed their Nature range called SPIDERWEB – it’s a series of Denim featuring intricate stitching in the shapes of SPIDERMAN, LOCUST and FISHTALE, “It’s Visual Art” laughs John confidently. The SPIDERWEB concept was the brainchild of Raboobie fan ISAAC – the boys cousin aka brother.

John: The SPIDERWEB range features a whole lot of highly impossible seams – it’s very detailed, PENTAX! We like to call them FITTED APPAREL and they’re probably as fitted as FITTED Apparel gets… “Accuracy is our middle name” he laughs…

There’s lots of laughing going on – these boys are modest and clearly well rooted in their proud past but looking confidently ahead to a successful future – we wonder what it is that keeps them smiling.

So what music did you show your range to?
John: ROCK MUSIC of course.

Sam: John and Isaac listen to Rock music all the time – I am more of a RAVER – Webb bros is one of my favourite groups…

John: No no no, we love ROCK MUSIC – you name it – Linkin Park, Metallica, Ministry, Iron Maiden, System of a Down – even Def Leppard – but we also support all local music. But ROCK is our first love and directs the ideas we come up with.
Sam: I am forced to listen to ROCK.

We love these boys and will definitely be investing in a piece of the SPIDERWEB pie…
