Last time we saw the dudes in action we were way impressed – I remember thinking “a South African RadioHead” (if that is remotely possible.) We’ve also heard a lot about Desmond and the Tutu’s although the name makes us cringe and certainly a bit skeptical of them. Wonder what uBabe Tutu thinks? We just have too much respect to use his name in vain but maybe we’re being old and boring? Surely there could be better name options – besides the association, it just sounds so corny…and you know Editorista can’t take corn. We’ll have to check them out and let you know but they’re going to have to persuade us. Get ready for your Monthly fix with the soulful sounds of Khenzero and his crew. This Saturday at Roka “Party People” features Khethi – some of you may recognise her from the cocacola colab album (2004?) where she sings the song “Be with Me” alongside 340ml and Jahseed. Khethi’s voice is amazing and reminds us of ZapMama’s and a little of Amel Larrieux (one of Editorista’s favourite vocalists who is about to release her new album) and we’re gonna go catch her for sure. Indies (you know who you are) get ready for a Stellar night (Sharpile Dave) – In the wake of the incredible success of their Jozi album launch, the Dirty Skirts (fabulous looking website!) return to The 88 Lounge on Friday 1 June for one night only! The bands debut album, On A Stellar Bender has been turning heads countrywide, and the first single from the album has been receiving extensive airplay on 5FM and campus stations around the country. Here are the details: The weekend-long Africa Day celebrations are about to commence, and preparations are at an advanced stage for the various events that will take place on the weekend of May 25th. This years Africa Day activities, hosted by the City of Joburg, the French Institute, Arts Alive, the Lotto and SABC will take place as three free events throughout different areas of Joburg, namely Newtown, Alexandra and Soweto. The festivities kick off on May 25th, with a concert at the Mary Fitzgerald Square, featuring Nigerian afro-beat star Femi Kuti, South Africa’s Ringo, Lesego, Corlea and Louis Mhlanga, Zambian vocalist Lindiwe, Ugandan Kinobe as well as the Vuvuzela Orchestra. The concert, which is free to members of the public will be televised on SABC2 and SABC Africa from 22h00 – 00h00 on Friday, 25th May. The next day, May 26th, the move is in Alexandra’s Jukskei Park, where a fashion show with a difference will take place along the banks of the Jukskei River, followed by performances by Flabba, L’vovo Derango and Siphokazi, all open to the public at no charge.
