Represent Review: Kings Of Leon

We are an African site with a global outlook and let’s make it clear that we are not dependent on local media as our only source of what’s hot, happening or popular around the world.  How could we be visionary if we were?  I just happen to have one soulful cousin (what’s up bro!) in the UK with great musical taste who has promised to let me know his recommendation on the next big rock sounds for all the soulful rockers in the house (you know who you are.)  Right now Stu can’t stop listening to the Kings of Leon’s new album “Because of the Times” he sent me a track (now I’m no rocker) but in my old school opinion it definitely has a touch of Counting Crows and is certainly moreish with lots of depth: STU RECOMMENDS ROCK FOR REPRESENT From the Springsteenesque opening track ‘Knocked Up’ to the sliding grooves of closing number ‘Arizona’, the Kings of Leon’s third album Because of the Times, propels the Nashville  clan into the upper echelon of Rock ‘n Roll order. While still keeping with their grand old recipe for course-grained, voice strained Rock ‘n Roll, the Followill Foursome have fine tuned their art to produce an album which is, surprisingly, easy on the senses. Lead Vocalist Caleb Followill’s delivery is not always comprehensible, which simply adds to the bewhiskered aura of the album. Producer Ethan Johns approach of “If it  aint broke, don’t fix it”, coupled with the King of Leon’s real world themes, forces the user to listen absorbedly. I found myself turning up the volume a number of times while listening to this album. The cheeky Rock numbers (Charmer, McFearless, My Party, Camaro) keep the Kings grounded to their roots, while the soft tone pieces (True Love Way, Ragoo, Runner, Arizona) are delicately delivered and make the album well rounded.  The Kings of Leon have matured, but their music maintains its Rock ‘n Roll innocence. If you were not a fan of the Followills before, you may well be after listening to this album. Represent Review: A Wet and Splashy Fen 007

We know it’s late and often we are early (well compared to traditional media) but our dear Panda has spent weeks coming down from the Drakensburg Mountains where she found herself in hippy heaven and was very tempted not to return to the real world 🙂 Sharpile Panda as always.  See our pics of Splashy Fen here. There’s no better way to sample South African music than to attend a festival like Splashy Fen. Not only is there a wide variety of music and activities, it’s a great way to see that beautiful lush part of the world and catch up with long lost friends – and there’s no need for drinking and driving. Granted, not all South African music is represented and we didn’t have the biggest names in the business this time, but there’s enough music to keep your mind off any discomforts you might experience if you’re averse to mud. If I have any advice to give when going to any festival, take gumboots. You will consistently have clean, warm feet and that is more important that anything at two in the morning in the rain when you can’t see what you’re walking in…and there was plenty of rain at Splashy Fen this year. Furthermore, a fabulous pair becomes an essential fashion accessory and I was delighted to see how many people went to extra lengths to make their’s the coolest. It certainly beat’s the “packet-tied-around-the-takkie-and-knotted-at-the-ankle” look. Luckily my friends and I went up in a camper van, kindly sponsored by Maui Motorhome Rentals http://www.maui.co.za/ (thanks guys!). Hiring them isn’t as costly as you’d think either, if you compare it to other comfortable accommodation. There were times when I felt awful being so warm and dry and clean, sipping on a frosty drink from the fridge in a comfortable deck chair when a cold, filthy hapless festival goer, wobbled past our camp, slipping in their slops. We arrived on Friday around mid-day and the sun was out but weakened by a few thin clouds. The first act we caught as we ambled into the Grant Erskine Marquee was Adrian Shannon’s acoustic set followed by Roly Struckmeyer’s gentle acoustic indie-style music. When we felt like moving around, we strolled amongst the stalls which offered food to suit all tastes from boerie rolls and chips to fabulous falafels, smoothies and soups and clothes, accessories (for those who forgot gloves and scarves), beautiful jewelry, cheap trinkets and tie dye everything. There was even a tattoo parlour which, incidentally, was busy each time I walked past. Later that evening, when we were well-wrapped, we watched Somebody’s Child featuring 14 year old Zoe...

Represent Interview: SPOEK MATHAMBO

Spoek Mathambo’s  Spoek Mathambo’s  name keeps on knocking on our radar so we thought we’d get straight to it, get in early before the rest & let you know all about this young rebel musician with his own flow.  Expect the unexpected when it comes to our featured peeps!  In the first of a whole lot of interviews with young people who stand out from the crowd and are defining their own future, here’s SPOEK – see how he rocks .  You can check out his MySpace site here where you can hear his music and see his videos.  It’s a long interview, but we think it’s worth it!  Good luck to you Spoek and BIG UPS for the interview!  Keep it up bro! : Represent:   So Spoek, give us the short version of your back-story if you don’t mind… from birth to now, how did you find yourself where you are at? How old are you and where do you live?   My real name’s Nthato Mokgata, I like to think of myself as the Ndebele prince (and I don’t mean prince like diamante studded one piece lycra suits and hi-heels, but I mean Maraba royal family of Polokwane). My connection to the crown is somewhat remote, but it makes me feel fun inside.   I’m the singer, dancer, songwriter, fashion-face, doodle artist extraordinaire. I like watching old episodes of Seinfeld and drinking slush puppies until my face turns lime green.   I have come to grips with the fact that I’m a bit of a nerd, because hey, what can I say, nerd is very much in vogue now.   Everyday I wake up to my grandmother’s voice. She’s 94 and very strong, abnormally strong (and perty) for a lady of her age. She asks lots of questions, like what am I doing with my life, when I’m going to wash the dishes and when I’m, going to get my driver’s license. That’s my driving force.   I live in Johannesburg in my mother and father’s house. I am 21.   I have been writing songs since I was 10. I never, ever thought I could be a professional rapper. I wanted to become a ninja, a computer programmer and a doctor, then eventually went to med school (because I was a big hippy and wanted to save the world….long story) and ditched the whole ninja thing. I then ditched the whole med school thing and learned to make pictures on the computer…graphic design. I’ve now decided I will become a professional musician.   I am in a group called SWEAT_X with the incredibly talented Afrikaaner, Markus Wormstorm. We...
