The hottest lofts on Jozi’s block for rent – hurry!
REMEMBER TO TELL THEM YOU ARE A REPRESENT SUBSCRIBER TO WIN SOME POINTS. IF YOU HAVEN”T SUBSCRIBED BEST YOU DO! Represent had the pleasure of meeting Richard Rubin – the energetic, dynamic and incredibly down-to-earth owner of Aengus Property Holdings, one of the new City property boys on the block. Well, that’s not quite correct, Aengu…s has been around for a couple of years, they’re just particularly modest about what they’re doing and have kept their work under the press radar… even the way we found out about them was serendipitous. (click here to go to their site) And if you haven’t heard about Aengus yet watch this space as they launch the first of their major loft buildings in downtown Joburg. What we found particularly impressive about Richard, besides his warm charm and slick city vibe, is that when you talk to him and walk around watching him greet and shake hands and interact with the cleaner to the builder, you realise that it’s not just about making money. There’s something a lot more profound in Richard’s efforts to turn the city around. And let us point out now that this mover just turned 30 Richard ain’t no rich kid nor trust fund kid trying to make a quick buck on a fast-moving bandwagon – he grew up in Durbs with a father who was a playwrite and poet. Anyone with artistic parents will tell you that they were never financially secure however the crazy creative teachings. fires and spirits in their homes probably more than made up for it. He understands what it’s like to have an entrepreneurial nature but not to have the means to bring your dreams to life… That’s why his projects are not dealing with the upper class city resident… he’s going for the middle of the range young, fun and funky person who believes in the city but cannot afford to buy there – yet! What’s important to Richard is that he gets the ‘right people’ into his flats, or should we call them lofts – they’re so gorgeous the word ‘flat’ does no justice… “Right People” to him are diverse people, positive people, young people, city people who are passionate about living an urban lifestyle, movers and shakers on their way up who want New York now. He wants trend-setters and fire-starters… young professionals already working in the city. He wants to encourage a culture of people walking, working and living in the city. In a nutshell he wants people who like being the first to do something fabulous but do it with soul. So, if that description fits you, then...

Japanese band FUNKIST touriing in KZN
It’s a rare thing to hear about a person with a mix of South African and Japanese heritage, it’s even more rare to hear of a funky bunch of Japanese musicians touring in Kwazulu Natal – go get ’em! FUNKIST is a Japanese alternate pop band with a jazz groove. As a 7-piece band utilising traditional and non-traditional instruments, their sound is abundant with culture and immensely… exciting. FUNKIST’s music is written by Saigoh who was born in Tokyo of Japanese and South African parents. From a young age, he was faced with racial discrimination and prejudice that made him extremely aware of intense yet conflicting emotions; peace, love, tolerance, hatred, and violence. The music draws his audience into a painful world revolving around a sun of hope. FUNKIST is an original band delivering special music. Join us! THURSDAY – FEB 16 Red Door – Pietermaritzburg Supported by Sitter 8pm – R15 entry FRIDAY – FEB 17 Rocky Ridge – Ramsgate 7pm – R20 SATURDAY – FEB 18 Mojo’s Blues Room – The Square – Umhlanga supported by RITS 7pm (note early start to the evening) – FREE ENTRY !!! Freedom of speech V fair censorship…?
We kind of expected someone to write about it… remembering that we are a site where people can express themselves FREELY… AQUOIBON gives us his thoughts on the censoring of the Prophet Mohammed pictures… PLEASE NOTE – the views expressed on this blog are not those of the editor – being a citizen journalism blogazine, we publish the thoughts of our readers…WHAT DO YOU THINK?NG Freedom of speech is a basic human right, included under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While it is true that with every right come responsibilities and that freedom of speech should be used wisely, towards achieving legitimate goals, restrictions upon one’s freedom of speech should be handled with equal caution. Following intense international debate over the publication of satirical cartoons of prophet Mohammed in several European countries and the ensuing pressure from the Muslim community, the South African High Court recently issued an order prohibiting newspapers to publish cartoons or drawings depicting Prophet Mohammed. This decision sets a dangerous precedent of press censorship, opening the door to major abuse. Religious icons are not inoffensive; they are political and have influence over one’s behavior and should therefore be open to healthy criticism. Would the next step be to prohibit critical depiction of political leaders because it harms sensibilities of some community? While we do not necessarily agree with the content of these cartoons, we think it is healthy for them to be freely available. Thanks to the Internet, they are: here and...
STEREO MC’s. FLASH REPUBLIC, GOLDFISH join the party
So the COCACOLA COLAB MASSIVE MIX is hotting up with a whole lot more bands joining the frey … One thing is clear about this concert, although the name refers to the Colab album that was released last year, there’s nothing Kwaito or SA HipHop about this line up – it’s for the ROCKERS in the house… unless there will be suprise additions at the end – what about MXO, Brasse van die Kaap, …Kwane Experience, Tumi and the Volume? We’re sure they would bring a little soul to this African-based event??? Anyway that’s just the Represent way of thinking… moving on, the latest bands announced at this gig are: AUDIO BILLY’s, STEREO MC’s, ROGER GOODE (some house music in the mix! nice one) FLASH REPUBLIC (fabulous band featuring Tamara Dey) and GOLDFISH (hot hot hot). Don’t forget the HUGE names of Fatboy Slim and Metallica … Then there’s Simple Plan, Collective Soul, The Rasmus, Seether, Fatboy Slim, Prime Circle, The Finkelsteins, The Parlotones, Arno Carstens, Flat Stanley, State Far Better, Karen Zoid, Fokofpolisiekar, Sitter, and the SpoonFeedas. PARTY ON DUDES! ******************************************** 9 Feb AYEYE! Word about how fabulous South Africa really is must be spreading through the musical echelons of the ‘Western World’ as every John Robbie and Missy make their way towards our tempting land… Is there anyone left (Yeeeeeeeees scream Madonna fans in vain!) Our opinion is that they love the anonymity that SA brings them – they can chill out without being constantly hounded or followed – well not by us anyway, you never know who tagged along with them. We tend to respect people’s space. Ne? Rock fans will be DELIGHTED to know that Collective Soul, The Rasmus and Seether will all be here in March for three SOUL’D out concerts…PS: Dare we ask this – what’s with CENTURION??? What happened to Ellis Park – are we too scared or has Pretoria made it’s voice heard? Check out the PR (clearly we don’t write these things guys…): Saturday 18th March – Supersport Park, Centurion Tuesday 21st March – ABSA Stadium, Durban Saturday 25th March – The Green Point Stadium, Cape Town COCA-COLA COLAB is proud to announce THE COCA-COLA COLAB MASSIVE MIX -Presented by 5FM.
