Jozi Street Food Dished Up With Style in Braamies
AfricanDiva’s got the munchies and she knows just where to go to fill the home-cooked yearning – Check out the new restaurant ON ROUTE in Braamfontein There’s a new-style eatery in Braamfontein that’s uplifting the status and dignity of Jozi’s street food – and the people who enjoy it. It is frequented by South Africans proud of their roots and unwilling to sell out to so-called… “aspirational” American and European inspired menus. There’s a daily queue for vetkoek and cappuccino breakfasts (0ver 900 vetkoek sold per day) and loyal customers sit down in the self-service eatery that’s sophisticated yet warm and are offered REAL South African staples like samp, pap. roti’s, dumpling (pot bread) or rice to complement any of the traditional meat dishes on offer. New Customers are surprised to find old favourites like chakalaka, chicken curry and mogodu (tripe) on the eatery’s menu – food that has traditionally been served by caravans parked on the side of the road and corner cafes marred by security bars, degrading service and dirt and grime to boot. Every LSM group can afford something to eat and appreciate the quality of the ingredients and care in preparation – oh ja! and the taste is ngca! Take my word for it, I am an addict!! To quote the owner Jacqueline: “People ask me if it’s safe here. How much safer can you get than fresh food served from an open kitchen in all the ways you like it? Oh yes, the neighbourhood has great security!” ON ROUTE 46 Biccard St, cnr Stiemens Braamfontein (011) 403...
KULULA is leaving the country!
Well kind of. You’ll remember us asking KULULA, one of our fabulous low-cost chipile airlines, to please take us to other African countries too? Well they’ve heard our pleas, they’ve taken heed and they’re kicking off flights to the first two of LOTS of new African destinations to come. MARVELLOUS! The first two destinations are WIN…DHOEK in Namibia and HARARE in Zim – both are magic places – completely exotic to SA and well worth a visit. We recommend a holiday to Namibia especially – fly into WIndhoek, hire a car and head north for the desert… it’s mind-blowing. Here’s the PR” From Monday we’ll be offering flights to Africa. The days of sky-high fares on African routes are now officially over and you’ll be able to fly between Jo’burg and Harare and between Jo’burg and Windhoek, at the kind of fares that you expect from us. Fares from just R499 one way (excluding international departure taxes.) We’ve got our sights set on a few other spots in Africa as well, including Lusaka in Zambia, and will be working hard to get over the constraining regulatory hurdles to bring you lots more of Africa in the future. So, you can relax and breath again – we are leaving the country, but not without you! Nkosi Sikelel’...
1time and Kulula sales are on!!!
If you haven’t spent the morning pressing F5 on your keyboard trying to get into the 1time or Kulula site and you have nothing better to do – the no-frills airlines both kicked off their sales today – (funny that – reckon there must be an informer that lets the other airline know?). We have spent the last two hours on behalf of a friend trying to confirm her booking on 1time wh…ich got as far as the payment stage – once we put the credit card details in and pressed CONFIRM or PAY or whatever the final button was, it just crashed. Very disappointing. Real waste of our time. Anyway – both are offering around R239 – R259 one-way and to Harare and WIndhoek on Kulula are R329 or something riduiculous! Good luck – let us know if you have any success. KULULA 1TIME...
UB40 performing in Maputo – Jan 28
Late last night local TV took us on a warm nostalgic trip as we giggled in horror at the UB40 Red Red Wine music video from the 80’s -it was shot in black and white with the guys from UB40 looking very young and smothered in bad taste clothing. I’n’it Luv. But you just can’t deny the magic of UB40’s reggae music and it’s power to transport you back to the struggle days and lon…g car journeys to Zimbabwe to watch them perform live. We were lucky enough to attend a rainy and wet UB40 concert in Durban in the 90’s at the then named Kings Park stadium. Contrary to typical Drubs weather, the days immediately following the concert continued to be miserably rainy, with a constant dreary downpour… Rumour has it that by the time the sun came out on the third day post the concert, the entire sports field had a marijuana crop eagerly poking through the fertile Kwazulu soil. It was harvested immediately. The great news is that UB40 is back in Africa but this time they’re playing in Mozambique in the interesting city of Maputo at the Festival of Hope “Festivale esperanca”. Click here to check out the site, they’ll be accompanied by Kapa Dech, Lucky Dube, VINX, Oliver Mtukudzi and Rockfellers. With hits like ‘King’, ‘Kingston Town”, ‘Here I am”, “Rat in the Kitchen”, “DOn’t break my heart”, “Sing our own song” etc you have to make the trip! If you haven’t been to Maputo yet – Get Going! Vamos a la playa! There are various package deals on offer: Flight Centre – from R2185 including flights, accommodation at the Polana and tickets. CLick here for special. And Dana tours They have offers for self-drive, bus trip and airline ranging from R1500 onwards.
