It’s about time – PEBBLES finally takes the stage

I have been waiting for about 2 years for this album since first hearing her perform at the old Bassline with Thumi… Pebbles has one deep, soulful and jazzy voice and we can’t wait to buy her new album. Rage invites us to the launch and you to the performance at the 29’ers session this Sunday (don’t forget the elegant dress-code) – we’ll let …you know how the launch goes! PEBBLES LIVE! Soul singer Pebbles launches her long awaited solo debut Playful Soul tonight at The Bassline in Newtown, but don’t worry you’ll get the chance to check her out on Sunday the 29th of May, when the YFM 29ersLive Sessions present Pebbles at The Venue in Rivonia. Pebbles is the first female vocalist from Outrageous Records stable that brought you the acclaimed Hip-hop acts Zubz and Proverb. You may also know her voice from the times she features on tracks by Zubz, H20 and Tumi and The Volume. The songtress behind the beautiful song Destiny, the haunting melody and uplifting message, acclaimed today as an underground classic, has a brand of R&B/jazz/soul-flavoured music with cheeky inflections coined Playful Soul. Being blessed with a Manhattan Brother for a father, and being able to casually refer to Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbuli as ‘uncle’ and ‘auntie’ means the P.E and London-bred singer/song-writer’s musical foundation is formidable. Add to this the influences that she is continually exposed to, having worked with label mates Zubz and H20 on their respective albums as well as Expressions and Coca-Cola Collaborations compilations. Only then does Pebbles’ immense potential begin to hit home – potential previously tapped into even by noteworthy musicians outside her label. For one, Tumi and the Volume’s infamous singles ’76 and People of The Light are great tracks made outstanding by her poignant vocals, as most who have seen her perform with the band on stages like 2004’s North Sea Jazz Festival will attest. (A fan of Pebbles himself, Tumi writes and performs The Way of Want, a jazzy number produced by Nyambz on her new set.) Catch the exclusive first public live performance of songs from her debut album, Playful Soul. Featuring Tumi and the Volume on stage alongside the usual suspects in the mix Vinny Da Vinci, The Musical Maestro, DJ Monde and Jaws. Place: The Venue, 19 Wessels Road Rivonia, Time: 7pm, Dress code:Elegant, Damage: R80. The YFM 29ers Live Sessions, entertainment with class. For more info log onto...

Joburg lovers of good flieks, our favourite movie house, Cinema Nouveau, is finally getting some well-earned sponsorship from the Irish whiskey brand JAMESON. Good on ya Jameson! Ster-Kinek…or’s dedicated art circuit, Cinema Nouveau, the only one of its kind in the world, has signed a sponsorship deal with Jameson whiskey. Effective immediately, Cinema Nouveau will now be known as Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson. The new partnership between Jameson whiskey and Cinema Nouveau will ensure ongoing support for the growing alternative film market. The whiskey distillers’ involvement, in line with its global cinema strategy, will include film festival support; the introduction of audience awards at festivals, as well as hosting invite only screenings of classic films amongst other activities. The prestigious and significant partnership will see Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson introducing a new brand identity, with new dýcor in the foyer, new staff uniforms and signage at cinemas nationwide, as well as added value for the film industry and audiences. Jameson whiskey has been known for over a decade of involvement in cinema, particularly in the field of short films and as a participant in European film festivals. Apart from funding a number of emerging directors as part of the European Encounters Film Festival, they have been presenting Jameson Short Film Awards since 2001, with the aim of supporting filmmakers and enhancing the profile of the winning directors and their films. Commented Adriaan Eksteen, Jameson Marketing Director, “Jameson is involved in film and film-making on a global level. This is a natural extension of the work we do internationally. We find a lot of modern, discerning moviegoers amongst our consumers, so not only is this a sound marketing strategy, but also a meeting of likeminded personalities.” In South Africa Jameson whiskey will be hosting its audience awards for the fifth year at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, which runs in Johannesburg from Fri 5 August – Sun14 August. The Jameson Audience Awards at Encounters were established in 2001 and are decided by popular ballot. These Awards are very important, precisely because they are not decided by a panel of ‘experts’, but by popular choice and praise documentary filmmakers for their work.
