Workshops attended by over 1000 students and independents from around the country Representing MultiChoice’s flagship corporate social investment programme, the MultiChoice VUKA! Awards encourage established and aspirant creatives to make a TV commercial for a charity or cause that is close to their hearts in the form of Public Service Announcements (PSAs). PSA Briefs in 2005 include Celebrating democracy; Love thy Neighborhood and Environment, Act Like a First Class Citizen, Think/Live More Healthily, Living Positively with Aids, The People Who Serve South Africa, Making a Kid’s Future Mean Something, Literacy For Old and Young, and South Africa: Land of Heart, Soul and Beauty. The MultiChoice VUKA! Awards Competition’s two categories encompass Newcomers and Professionals, with awards being presented in each of these for the following: Best Overall PSA, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Creative Concept and/or Script, Best Use of Humour to convey a serious message, Best Soundtrack (i.e original music composed and arranged specifically for the PSA – or sound design created using library SFX and music), Best Creative Editing, Best Animation (provided at least five PSA’s are received in this category), and at the sole discretion of the competition organizers, a further award (applicable only for previously disadvantaged newcomers who have not attended a film school) for “RAW Talent”. MTV ANNOUNCES FIRST EVER AFRICA VJ
The votes are in! Check out the winner! He’s from KZN…. SIZWE DHLOMO WINS NATIONWIDE COMPETITION TO HOST MTV BASE WORLD CHART EXPRESS! MTV base, the pan-African music channel from MTV, last night appointed its first ever African VJ after a live face-off between the three VJ finalists on South African TV. Durban-born rap music fan, Sizwe Dhlomo, was appointed the official h…ost of MTV base World Chart Express, the new music chart show sponsored by Fanta, which airs weekly on SABC1. Sizwe beat fellow finalists Ash-Leigh La-Foy and Sfiso Magagula and thousands of hopefuls who attended three regional heats in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. His prize – the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to host the first series of MTV base World Chart Express, which he will present from next Wednesday 12 October. The confident 22-year old who was initially beaten in the Durban auditions by fellow finalist Ash-Leigh La Foy, was so determined to become MTV base’s first South African VJ that he traveled to Johannesburg in order to try his luck one last time. “There was no way I was going to give up,” he enthused. “I took what I could from the Durban auditions and made sure that I gave my best possible performance in Johannesburg.” And it was this performance that clinched him a place amongst the three finalists. Sizwe’s fate was decided by SMS voting by viewers of MTV base World Chart Express, which accounted for 50% of the total vote, with the remainder decided by a panel of 5 celebrity judges including MTV base talent and music executive, Richard Dimosi, SABC TV presenter Zam Nkosi, 5FM’s queen of the airwaves Nicole Fox, kwaito superstar Zola and Fanta marketing guru Sgwili Gumede. MTV France VJ, China, who acted as caretaker host for the first 2 shows, symbolically handed over the winners’ microphone to Sizwe at approximately 6:55 pm local time. Going home empty-handed were the two runners up: 18 year old Ash-Leigh La’Foy and 22 year old Sfiso Magagula. The sad news is that the toll of the HIV/AIDS virus is rearing it’s ugly head and the predictions of thousands of orphans suffering either from the disease or through it’s deadly social impact are ringing true. Catch this Special Assignment that looks at the methods employed by our neighbour Botswana in handling the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the severity of the disease in thier context. /STRONG Special Assignment 25 October 2005 SABC3 21:30 “SAVING A GENERATION” Unlike our own country, Botswana has done almost everything right in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Yet large numbers of children continue to die of AIDS-related illnesses. This beautifully filmed documentary gives a human face to the tragedy of children with HIV and its screening marks the launch of a global project aimed at meeting the needs of children affected by the virus. Internationally children still see only a tiny fraction of the resources dedicated to fight AIDS. Few HIV positive children have access to life-preserving pediatric drugs. Even fewer children orphaned and made vulnerable by AIDS receive outside support. And less than ten percent of women receive services to prevent the transmission of HIV to their babies. Botswana has done much to address the spread of the disease. It spends almost a quarter of its budget on health and only 5% on defence. But this is still not enough. While children have free access to treatment, thousands of them die from AIDS every year and many more have been orphaned by the disease. “Saving a Generation” will be screened on 25 October 2005, the day the UNICEF launch their “Unite For Children, Unite Against AIDS” campaign. It will highlight the fact that HIV/AIDS is now a children’s disease, robbing tens of millions of their futures.
