DELUXE – “The next big thing in Rock” – Free Launch

I remember about a year ago Linny, knower of all things cool in Deben, was raving about this new up-n-coming band Deluxe, stating categorically that they were “the next big thing” on the rock music scene. Well, she’s always right and here they are, causing trouble in Joburg and launching their album on Wednesday the 3 August. Support this band, they’re doing it on their own. ROLY – so g…lad to have you back – hope we hear that world class Eagle-eye voice of yours. DELUXE LAUNCH PARTY Barcodes The ZONE Rosebank Wed 3 August 8pm Free Entry Durban based outfit Deluxe have just released their debut album. The self-titled work has been released on their own, independent record label and will soon available at good CD stores country-wide. Deluxe formed two year ago when Torsten Fehsenfeld (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Aidan Cornhill (lead guitar) blended their mutual love of great song writing and honest music into a simple duo playing music they knew would move listeners. The term ‘deluxe’ means, literally “of the highest quality”, and this formed the guideline for everything the band produces. The solid groundwork paid off when renowned local musicians showed interest, and soon bass player Roly Struckmeyer and drummer Adam Stanley joined to form a four-piece band. Their sound filled out while keeping the simplicity and spaciousness that first made the songs beautiful and special. Following these with a live radio performance and appearances at many gigs and major festivals such as Splashy Fen, Flux and Southern Cross, proving themselves as a worthy live act. They have now completed the recording of their debut album “This is Deluxe”. The entire production of which has been funded independently by the band. It comprises of eleven songs, beautifully crafted and co produced by legend David Birch (Squeal) at Tropical Sweat Studios. Following up on the launch, Deluxe will soon be hitting the road to promote the album in all the major national centres. Watch the press for gig details. HALALA Durban – such an AWESOME AFRICAN city!

AWESOME AFRICA MUSIC FESTIVAL will be taking place in Durban on the 1st and 2nd October 2005 at the Playhouse in Durban… looks like a fantastic line-up! Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal and legendary Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain have been confirmed as part of a star-studded cast of musicians for the 2005 Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival to be held in the Playhou…se on Oct 1 & 2. One of the key events on the KZN cultural calendar is the seventh Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival which moves to the Playhouse Complex in Durban for the first time on October 1 and 2 which is again part of the eThekwini Municipality’s drive to develop a Cultural Precinct within Durban’s Inner City. The festival forms the anchor for the exciting Celebrate eThekwini – Halala Durban season. The festival has developed a unique multi-cultural pan-african musical identity which includes unusual marriages of different genres and styles. The general theme of the music focuses on collaborations with artists from the African continent and beyond – and represents a massive cross-cultural fusion of energy that attracts musicians and music lovers both nationally and internationally. One of the highlights is Baaba Maal from Senegal who is a true original African superstar, his distinctive and soulful voice sings of the mysteries of ancient Africa as well as controversial contemporary issues, like women’s rights and Aids education. Baaba Maal comes from the Toucouleur people in the Fulani Fouta region and learnt his culture from the old musicians in local villages. Since 1982, (when Maal and his longtime friend, blind singer/guitarist and griot Mansour Seck formed Daande Lenol “Voice of the People”) – he has combined gentle West African folk and mbalax rhythms with rap, hip-hop, techno and reggae styles. In 1994, his landmark mega-hit album Firin’ in Fouta established him in the hearts and minds of millions of fans around the world. A real coup is the legendary Zakir Hussain from India – a tabla virtuoso and international phenomenon of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, as well as gaining him worldwide fame. The favorite accompanist for many of India’s greatest musicians, from Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar to Birju Maharaj and Shivkumar Sharma, his playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity. Zakir’s musical contribution has been unique, with many historic collaborations including Shakti with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, Jan Garbarek, Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum, George Harrison, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Tito Puente, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, the Hong Kong and New Orleans...

Juvenile 031 say they were born to perform – catch them at one of their gigs and decide for yourselves! Juvenile 031 Performing Live at the Bat Centre Date: Friday 28 October 2005 Time: 2…1:00 Entrance Fee: R20 Featuring: DJ Lapps & Urban Militants Info: 082 856 2610 Juvenile 031 is Prinston (Taurus) & Mel-Capone (Capricorn) BIOGRAPHY Taking their music from the streets to the world – the members of Juvenile 031 say they were born to perform, and their smooth R&B and Hip-Hop sounds are already receiving wide acclaim. A group of friends growing up in the suburbs of Newlands East in Durban, Juvenile 031 first got together in 1997. The name of their outfit is quite appropriate – “Juvenile” representing their youth and “031” the dialling code for Durban. In the early days, these talented performers would go out and buy Puff Daddy and Mase instrumentals and use them to do gigs in and around town, performing at clubs, schools and charity fairs. Known for their cool clothes and even cooler lyrics, it wasn’t long before they built up quite a following in the “East”. They have also appeared on the main stages of the Splashy Fen Music Festival for the last three years in a row. Juvenile 031 consists of Prince “Prinston” Zondo and Melchuan “Mel-Capone” Barends, with Mel-Capone and Prinston writing most of their lyrics. While these guys are totally dedicated to their music, there’s still plenty of time in their lives for other interests. For instance, Mel-Capone has done two years in speech and drama at UDW and Prinston three years in IT at Oval International College. Priding themselves on “nothing but the tightest flow, fattest beats, and flyest gear”, Juvenile 031’s hit tracks include City Without Pity, Unfamous and BumpMyShit, which is soon to be released on their debut album “The Pension Plan”. Their track (Juvenile in me), which is “strictly for the ladies”, featured on the C-Weed Three compilation in 2003....

The stage of Bounce looks like an urban adaption to the successful set of West Side Story, with ghetto architecture. The dance is mixed with rap from a DJ and a human beat-box, and shows the history and culture of hip-hop in a nutshell. Funk, jazz, nightclub dance, John Travolta disco soul from the 70’s, the first raps of Grandmaster Flash, and the MC Hammer dance: the black street culture in a free associative form. The 15 dancers can perform all styles like popping, locking, b-boying or the boogaloo in a breathtaking way. Limbs go every way and in unexpected directions, the un-logic of the human body is visualized. HIP HOP This term refers to the culture itself. It’s not something you do, it’s a way of life! There are 7 elements of hip-hop: MC, DJ, graffiti, locking, popping, breaking and beat boxing. LOCKING This style was developed on the west coast of America by Don Camballock and his fabulous lockers, and was a forerunner to hip hop. It is best described as playful, with over- exaggerated gestures and explicit, distinct movements. POPPING This dance came from the US west coast. Popping can be broken down into several different styles: waving, hitting (contraction of the muscles), tickin’. Animating, King Tut, bobbing, boogaloo, robot and mime. BREAKING (OR B BOYING) This dance...
