David Kau will lead the line-up as the MC for the tour, a task he was given nine years ago at the first ‘The Blacks Only Comedy Show’.. With favourite Capetonian Marc Lottering on stage, the audience can expect to be on the receiving end of a lot of earthy local humour. Conrad Koch aka Chester Missing, a political analyst and weekly columnist with award-winning news site ZA News, has broken new comic ground with his outrageous, hard-hitting, frank and downright hilarious interviews with South Africa’s political elite. His interviewees include the ANC’s Gwede Mantashe, COSATU’s Zwelinzima Vavi, COPE’s Mosiuoa Lekota, UDM’s Bantu Holomisa, the DA’s Helen Zille, Cape Town’s executive mayor Patricia De Lille and many others. Represent had the opportunity to interview Jazz pianist Bokani Dyer, the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Jazz and recently the winner of a SAMRO Overseas Scholarship. Read our interview with the maestro after the jump. Hi Bokani, firstly congratulations on your scholarship win from the SAMRO foundation. Please give us a synopsis of your background where you come from and where you studied? Thank you… I was born in Gaborone, Botswana. I grew up between Joburg and Gaborone before taking up studies at the University of Cape Town in 2004 Have you always known you wanted to be a musician, and what motivated you to take it as a career? I’ve known since around the time I was 14 when I was listening to a lot of music and started taking piano lessons. I am motivated by the deep fulfillment that music can provide… Music can be a sanctuary, a playground or a teacher. Winning this prestigious award must come with a lot of excitement, what will ground you to complete this scholarship? I enjoy traveling. And the opportunity to be mentored by teachers and artists who inspire me is enough motivation for me to embark on the journey. Winning must be in your genes, you’re the 2011 recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz. Do you feel validated when you win an award or recognized for being an artist? Its great that I have been chosen as the recipient of these prestigious awards and the panel of judges who decide are qualified and knowledgeable so it is an honor to be recognized by them. Please tell us, what goes into your pre-show preparation? I make sure I’m well prepared playing-wise with repetitive practice. Yes it is true! The Craz-e crew has expanded. Eight hot, new, funky young people have joined the team after our beloved former presenters; Pearl Modiadie, Gillian Hughes, Babalwa Rasane, Kriya Gangiah, Morena Sefatsa and Lee-Roy Wright left the Craz-e stage to further pursue their careers. Craz-e has a history of launching young people’s careers in the industry. The following household names had their start on this crazy platform: Pabi Moloi, Da Les, Lalla Hirayama, Salamina Mosese, Stephina Zwane, McGayver, Caitlin Fox, Relebogile Mabotja, Gile Motshwane, Muso Sefatsa, Zandile Msutwana & Kim Engelbrecht. The new crew joins our self-claimed “aging one” Zola Hashatsi who’s been presenting on Craz-e since 2007. The dynamic between these young people is electric and viewers cannot seem to get enough. About Craz-e she says: “I see Craz-e as a platform that helps inform, entertain, and inspire the youth. Having the opportunity to be part of Craz-e has given me further insight into the different lives, cultures and experiences of South Africans. Sistahood is an incredible platform for female expression. It teaches young women to be independent, smart and to be leaders rather than followers.” This BA Corporate Communications Major (UJ) sees herself expanding into fashion and starting her PR and Communications agency in the near future. He brings to the show his loud, hyperactive energy on screen. In 2008 he matriculated and it was during this year that he wrote, directed, produced and starred in his first production. In 2009 he enrolled at The University of Johannesburg and studied Marketing Management where he was Top 15 of the marketing department for 2 years in a row and graduated in the year 2012.
