Dance music Bible Launching in South Africa.

Recognising South Africa’s growing status in the world of dance music, 3i Publishing has secured the rights to publish a South African edition of industry-leading DJ Mag. South Africa has now been added to the ever-impressive list of countries around the globe that publish a local version of the world-famous title after the many successful launches in Europe, Korea and South America. Founded in 1991 in the UK, DJ Mag fast became the bible of dance music and DJ culture across the globe, giving DJs and artists the platform to be profiled and their music highlighted, while continually staying on top of trends and shifts in electronic music. That same ethos will hold true for the South African edition of DJ mag, with the aim of using the magazine to profile and showcase local talent of world-class standard, as well as breaking international and local dance music news with the highly-regarded DJ Mag stamp of approval. Heather Mennell, editor of DJ Mag South Africa, explains the concept of DJ Mag in South Africa and what will make it different from other editions around the world: “It’s a well-known fact that South Africa is the biggest consumer of house music on the planet and our flourishing electronic music industry is producing world-class music and events. Our unique, multicultural take on dance music culture has grabbed the world’s attention and by bringing a long-serving, respected international publication like DJ Mag to South Africa we hope to contribute to the growth of the industry by creating an exciting new platform to showcase the talent that is driving the scene.” With the first issue being released at a retail price of only R19,90, 3i Publishing is determined to make DJ Mag accessible to everyone who is interested in and a part of South Africa’s fastest growing music industry. The low cover price will make the magazine accessible to aspiring DJs and producers wanting to learn more about electronic music and how to break into the industry. A digital edition will also be available on all Android mobile devices as well as the local iStore and iTunes platforms making the information available at all times to all readers. The first issue sees DJ icon, Black Coffee, boldly filling the front cover of the monumental magazine that is set to create a huge stir in South Africa’s dance music industry. Features include an exclusive interview with the man himself, as well as a look at the godfather of South African house Oskido.  Along side interviews with movers and shakers Goldfish and DJ Kent and innovators such as Haezer and Terrence Pearce, you can read about all the latest...

Art, Band, Graffiti and a Dinosaur Smash Together at Sci-Bono for The Night of a 1000Drawings 2013

The venue for this year’s Night of a 1000Drawings has been announced! This mass art exhibition for charity will take place on Thursday 7 November 2013 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg. Sci-Bono began life as the Electric Workshop. The building was initially the First President Street Power Station, commissioned in 1906 to power the new electric tram system. During Newtown’s years of decline as an industrial centre in the mid-1970s, the building stood derelict. In the 1990s, the building was often used as a music venue particularly after the elections of 1994. In 2004, the Gauteng Department of Education and the private sector initiated plans to develop a major interactive science centre. The new Sci-Bono Discovery Centre was to become the largest science centre in Southern Africa. Doors open at 6pm with the artwork on view until 8pm. Then the race to get a sticker on your coveted A5 masterpiece begins! At 9pm the artwork is taken down and collected by its new owners, and then the party begins. Four live bands will take to the stage, followed by DJ’s. A live Doodle Battle will take place in amongst the crowd, and party-goers can also expect to see Jozi’s hottest graffiti artists battle it out on the night. Partners Converse, Adobe and Red Bull have generously donated some great prizes for the artists participating in the battles, as well as those that have created artwork for the exhibition. Over 1000 pieces of artwork have been collected to date, and we’re still collecting! Join the 1000Drawings team at the regular Doodle events held around Jozi where A5 paper and drawing implements are supplied at the city’s hippest venues in a fun and chilled atmosphere. The public can also drop-off their A5 creations at any one of the partner coffee shops around town. For a list of these venues, go to the Drop-Off Points page on the website. The Night of a 1000Drawings is all about uplifting the inner-city and while things have improved since 2006 when 1000Drawings began, there are still many people who live extremely hard lives on the streets of Johannesburg. Paballo, our main charity, continues to feed and support homeless people living in the inner-city every week. Entirely run and funded by volunteers and donors, they need all the help they can get. These volunteers will be working at the Night of a 1000Drawings. Our second charity, Mmabana began when one of Paballo’s success stories – Nosiku Kalonga returned to her home in Zambia and decided to create an organisation that would do for the children of Choma, what Paballo had done for her...

Bheki Khoza and Mbuso Khoza Live on Stage.

Bheki Khoza and Mbuso Khoza Live on Stage.

There’s nothing more unifying than sharing a surname to sharing a stage. The two Khoza’s, Mbuso and Bheki are set to appear together this November in Braamfontein for a once in a lifetime of many collaborations to follow. Read more details after the jump. The Khoza clan will be aptly represented by singer Mbuso Khoza and guitarist Bheki Khoza in a rare, one off collaboration on the 8th November, 2013, @The Fringe, Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein. This is a rare sharing of storytelling through music. Bheki Khoza is an accomplished guitarist with many years of experience as a session musician, teacher and soloist. Mbuso Khoza is a relative newcomer, with a passion for music making and storytelling that is second to none. They will be joined on stage by the strong, emerging voice of Lindiwe Maxolo, as their special guest. Ihobhu lomlilois a Zulu expression that refers to the spark that starts a fire. And this night promises to be one in which the Joburg skies will be set ablaze by the ancient voice of Mbuso Khoza and the emotive guitar of Bheki Khoza. His genre-defying voice and music separates Mbuso from his peers, with an ability to reach down to long gone memories. His sound is of this world yet reaches beyond this world. Mbuso’s debut album “Zilindile” earned him a Metrofm award for Contemporary Jazz in 2012. He was recently seen at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival in August 2013. He has collaborated with bass supremo Carlo Mombelli, both in Johannesburg, as well as travelling with him to Switzerland, in September 2013. Mbuso’s star gets stronger and brighter as he navigates an increasingly busy schedule, both at home and abroad. Bheki Khoza, master guitarist and a consummate storyteller himself, will accompany this gifted singer. Bheki’s sound fuses maskandi with blues and Jazz riffs with ease and comfort. Audiences will be welcomed by the compelling voice of Lindiwe Maxolo, a young Jazz vocalist who’s range references the vocabulary of a seasoned scat master, as much as she calls on the traditional sounds of her native Xhosa people. In Mbuso’s words “I’ll be doing songs from my album with my band, kanti futhi sizobe sihaya izingoma zakwa Khoza, amahubo nemivumo yakwa Khoza” (“…We shall be singing the traditional and family songs of the Khoza clan”). Tickets are available @joburgtheatre.com/0861 670 670/At the venue. Doors open at 7.30pm and show starts promptly at 8pm. WE ARE ONE Colour Festival moves to March 2014.

Sad yet comforting, the 23 November scheduled Colour festival has been moved to the  end of the 1st quarter 2014. Full announcement after the jump. The Joburg WE ARE ONE Colour Festival, originally scheduled for 23 November 2013, will move to the new date of 22 March 2014 so that award-winning event organiser, Seed Experiences, can deliver festival-goers the best colour festival experience in the country. “We recognise that there have been a lot of copycat colour festivals across South Africa this year, with very little to differentiate one from the other,” says Seed Experiences managing director, Brian Little. “To reaffirm WE ARE ONE as the original colour festival in the country, maintain our credibility as top event organisers, and deliver even better colour festivals, we have taken the proactive decision to move the Joburg event to March 2014.” Brian adds that the move will mean the Joburg event can join Cape Town on 21 March 2014 as part of an annual WE ARE ONE Series. Being like everyone else is not the WE ARE ONE vibe. Our fans expect only the best from South Africa’s original colour festival, so we plan to give it to them. The date change means Seed Experiences will be maximising and distinguishing the WE ARE ONE experience, in contrast to all other colour festivals. Seed Experiences will deliver a production that is bigger and better by securing a top international and local line-up, ensuring venue exclusivity, superior colour powder quality and overall entertainment. All existing tickets for the Joburg event will automatically be changed to the new March 2014 date. All fans who hold onto their tickets for the new date will be offered one free bag of colour powder, which can be collected from the powder and merchandise tents on the day, using a voucher issued by Webtickets. If a refund is required, ticket holders can email info@webtickets.co.za and include their reference numbers. For all EFT/ cash deposit payments, please include your bank details.
