LADIES! Thinking of shacking up? mhhhmmm
A very dear friend of mine is on the brink of moving in with her man – she asked me for some advice (being a masterful living together old bag) and as I typed away, I decided to make it a post on REPRESENT as it’s my generic advice on living together and not directed at her specifically. There are two readers of REPRESENT that I would really like to comment on this post – VANDALISTANG and JEZEBEL… ladies – please wax lyrical and tell me if I am talking bull. There is clearly not an inch of objectivity in this and it’s totally generalised. I think that before one moves in together, particularly after a short period of dating, it’s really important to have an initial test period. Moving in together is kind of like getting married – you really do commit yourself to a long term arrangement and although the honeymoon days of living together may be fantastic – if it goes wrong, extricating yourself from it can be a nightmare and a real set back in your life. And we all want a fabulous life with as few setbacks as possible. We want to be in control. Don’t relinquish that control for the ‘romanticised’ dream of waking up together. It gets ugly. Sex gets less. Farting gets more. Dishes double. You will become the slave-girl. They are all the same. And that’s from someone that probably has one of the more enlightened new age okes around… Often when we are in the process of considering the ‘move’ we tend to have the rose-tinted lenses on and we ignore the little naggings and irritations that may be niggling… DON’T IGNORE THEM because they will raise their ugly heads pretty quickly. Think about it the way we should all think about marriage – if there is one little voice saying “Are you 100% sure about him” Don’t get married. If there is one little voice saying “Are you 100% sure about him” Don’t move in. In this day and age there is no reason why any woman should ‘settle’. There is no more ‘old maid’ status in this sex n the city life…we are all in a position to be independent, earn our own salaries and be OK without a man… don’t EVER SETTLE. And you know what I mean by SETTLE. Taking whoever comes along because they came along and noone else did. Rather be single and shining than ‘coupled’ and secretly unhappy. Don’t try fit in with the Joneses that just got married either. Marriage is becoming an outdated practice for many – its not the...

USSR Smirnoff party -see the pics!
SEE THE USSR PARTY PICS HERE Thanks to Smirnoff for the generous party at CItrus Lounge on Thursday night. The diminutive young DJ AYSA from the USSR did a fine job considering she is from one of the cultures probably the furthest away from ours (and with a damn side colder climate) -she managed to keep up th…e mood on the dancefloor post the Big Dawg DJ Fresh and even had some peeps getting down. She did go on quite early so we missed a chance to chat with her – well to her interpreter. Welcome to SA – we hope you had a good time. Here’s our list of what we loved about the party: 1) Fantastic Ice Sculptures with exotic shooters (see pics) 2) Fabulous Cocktails and awesomely skilled MIXERS aka barmen/women. 3) Stunning white outfits on the girls at reception 4) Great venue – we love Citrus Lounge but most of all it’s owner Anton Noortman. 5) Loads of snacks – they kept on coming. 6) Five free drinks each – thanks again! 7) I think it was DJ Mbuso at the end – wow he was awesome. What we think they could have done better… well – more bar space and some live entertainment to spice the house music up a a bit. But overall thanks for a well-organised and sweet party and the generosity of SMIRNOFF. ******************************************************* 7 July 2005 UPDATE Congrats! 4U: SA youth culture winners announced
For those Represent Regulators, you may have seen our earlier call for entry for the 4U Performance Awards – a foray into checking out our current YOUTH CULTURE> Well the entries were overwhelming – BIg Ups to the judges, we don’t know how they chose the winners. But choose they did and VOILA – the winners are… ONG The 4U Performance Awards (sponsored by Vodacom 4U and hosted by Atoll Media – publishers of blunt, Zigzag and Saltwater GIRL), were designed to recognise and reward performance and achievement in South African Youth Culture. The awards were launched in June last year and over an eleven month period, 54 nominees were collected. The list of nominees represented a broad cross section of the subcultures that drive youth culture. These include surfing, skateboarding, inline skating, snowboarding, skydiving, graffiti, street art, fmx, bmx, hip hop, punk, and rock music, wakeboarding, photography, animation and design. The winners were decided by public sms votes and decisions by a panel of judges. Top SA and international surfer Travis Logie was awarded Male Rider of the Year for walking away with the title at the WQS six star rated Rip Curl Pro held in Hossegor, France. This insane win earned him 2500 points, which qualified him for a position on the 2005 WCT (World Championship Tour). His high level international achievements make him the deserving winner of this category. Tamarys de Maroussem earned the title of Female Rider of the Year after some insane surfing achievements during the nomination period. Tamarys was nominated when she wowed onlookers with her third consecutive win of the Roxy Wahine cup. She then went on to win the women’s open division of the Gotcha Pro and she also won the ladies open division of the ASP Africa (Association of Surfing Professionals) PST (Professional Surf Tour). Local freesports photographer Barry Tuck won the Best Artistic Contribution category for extensively documenting the dynamic environment of youth culture over the last year. His body of work nominated included cover shots for blunt and Zigzag magazines, as well as many other insane photos published. His images are one of the main outlets of expression for a culture that redefines its boundaries and questions reality every second of every session. When the trends have changed, the names are only memories and the sessions are long forgotten, Barry’s pictures will still remain. Big wave surfer Jason Ribbink came up tops in the Most Radical Performance category with his entry of a big wave session in Cape Town last year. The biggest swell to hit Cape Town in three years was rolling in and Jason flew down...
