The Irresistable Facebook

I should have heeded my first Facebook friend’s warning – stop now before it’s too late.  I couldn’t, I was hooked already.  Which is really ridiculous considering how often I get tagged, invited, myspaced, linked in etc and manage to resist all of them all these years.  “I have my whole own blogazine dudes, why would I need Facebook?” Wrong. Facebook is the new Google.  (or old some wisened types would mock.) Over the years there have been loads of social networking sites that I have joined: the school one, to find out where those mates live who were never really your mates, the business one – where you have the chance to network with like-minded business contacts and the only person you hear from works in agriculture in Laos, the travel one – that only let’s you know about a travel special when you cant go, the photo-album sharing one that does work, the video sharing that is awesome etc.  But somehow Facebook seems to have the right formula – maybe because it combines all of the different ‘genres’ of social networking into one – so you can find school mates, business mates and mates of mates.  I think that the voyeuristic side to Facebook is also appealing – sneaking a look at your  friend’s mates and finding your ex-boyfriends photo and name – nothing like being able to check him out and see how well he’s aged 🙂  Then the interface is simple, minimalist, user-friendly and easy to use… We have to recommend it.  I know I am gushing and it’s old news, but waiting a long time for something often makes it much more big a deal when it eventually happens 😉 So we’re in.  Are you?  Get onto Facebook if you aren’t already. Wikipedia tells us: Facebook is a social networking website. It was originally developed for college and university students but has since been made available to anyone with an email address. People can select to join one or more participating networks, such as a high school, place of employment, or geographic region. As of February 2007, the website had the largest number of registered users among college-focused sites with over 25 million members worldwide (also from non-collegiate networks).[1] Facebook is the number one site for photos in the United States, ahead of public sites such as Flickr, with over 6 million photos uploaded daily.[2] It is also the sixth most visited site in the United...

Where in the World are South Africans?

Where in the World are South Africans?

One of our friendsters, the good guys at Homecoming Revolution, want to know where in the world South Africans live.  Check out the site here , peeps from home let us know where you are in this crazy world and what it is about SA that you miss the most and stand a chance at winning tickets back to SA.  We’re interested to see how this goes!  Sure it’s going to be amazing. http://www.whereintheworldareyou.co.za/  Click here for Homecoming’s new blog as well – inspired by Represent’s look n feel we believe.  Noddy badge for us :).  From the mouths of babes: A call to Global South Africans to tell us where you are. The Development of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the Homecoming Revolution (non-profit organization, sponsored by First National Bank, encouraging the skills to come back to South Africa) are undertaking a major survey to try and understand where South Africans are in the world. This survey will be the biggest research project to date aimed at South Africans living outside of South Africa.  The objective is to establish and get a realistic trend of when South Africans left, where they have gone and the reasons they left.  It will also give an indication of how committed South Africans are to contributing back to the country, even from a distance.  This is in line with the Government’s plan of encouraging ex-pat skills to play a part with their country of birth. Entitled “Where in the World Are You?” the campaign is intending to gather information which will be crucial to building a database of the South African skills.  The skills base will form part of the JIPSA initiative.   South Africans are encouraged to invite their friends and family living abroad to complete the survey and to win a chance of flights back to South Africa. “Much has been said about South Africans abroad. Research has been undertaken on how they feel. We are however hoping that this research will give us a good indication of when people left, why they left and the skills that they have.  This is imperative in continuing to build the nation and engaging with South Africans wherever they are. There is much that can be done to assist even without returning as recently indicated by Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, said Martine Schaffer, Managing Director of Homecoming Revolution. David Viljoen, Manager, Development Information Unit of Development Bank of South Africa said “Skills are a scarce resource, particularly in South Africa. The intention of the AsgiSA Skills Base, is to increase worldwide collaboration, involvement and interest in careers or interventions arising in South Africa that correspond with employment opportunities...

SAfrican has a shot at Spielberg’s “ON THE LOT”

Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett (Godfather of reality tv – Survivors, Apprentice etc) have just announced the list of 50 contenders for their new collaboration “ON THE LOT”, the search for the next big film director.  Over 12000 entries were submitted to the call for entry for a 5 minute short film. One South African has made the list of 50 semi-finalists – “Shira-Lee S., 38, acting teacher, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, now living in New York  ” See the full list of contestants here. You go girl!  We’ll be watching you! The winners get to make a movie with Spielberg at the Dreamwork studio and win a 1 million dollar development deal for their film – now that’s what we call a prize. Here’s more from Rotten Tomatoes: “On the Lot,” executive-produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will give aspiring filmmakers from around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks. Premiering [this] spring on Fox, this unscripted series will feature a cast of 16 undiscovered filmmakers competing to win the support of the show’s viewers, who will decide their fate in a weekly audience vote. The competition will air over two nights weekly, with a one-hour “Film Premiere” episode followed the next night by a half-hour “Box Office” results show. After a global search already underway, applicants will be winnowed to a group of 16 talented filmmakers. These finalists will be brought to Hollywood, where they will be divided into teams and will begin the journey toward their “big break.” Every week, the hopeful filmmakers will produce short films from a chosen genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. They’ll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer — professional writers, cast and crew, and possibly even Hollywood celebrities. After the teams have battled time frames, budgets and all the usual chaos that goes along with filmmaking, their films will debut and be critiqued in front of a live audience during the “Film Premiere” episode. Judges will include a high-ranking motion picture executive, a prominent film critic and a succession of well-respected guests, such as directors who are experts in the week’s featured genre. But the filmmakers ultimately will be judged by the harshest critics of all: the public. It will be Fox viewers whose votes determine which films should be left on the cutting-room floor. On each “Box Office” results show, the director whose feature garners the fewest votes will be sent home. The competition continues and directors are eliminated until only the most talented filmmaker is anointed the winner and heads...

Serbia win Eurovision 2007!

Serbia win Eurovision 2007!

Ever since I heard about (and once had the pain and pleasure of watching) Eurovision, a cheesy pan-European singing contest, I thought it would be amazing to have a Pan-African one.  Eurovision epitomises dodgy music taste – imagine taking the worst of your girl or boy bands or finding the most excruciatingly cheesy SAfrican pop singer who dresses with delightfully deplorable bad taste – they’d be our winning entry… I can think of a few just off the cuff.  Any others?  1. Patricia Lewis 2. Bianca Le Grange 3. Any old Popstars group 4. Amor 5. Dr Victor 6. Elle 7. Any wannabe Idols runner up Anyway, despite it’s questionable talent the live broadcast has a huge following, with the European nations all desperately competing for the winners position.  Last night the 2007 final was held in Helsinski, featuring classic lyrics such as “Get a life, Get Alive” “They can’t stop the spring” and “Comme Ci Comme Ca”- one might have thought themselves listening to a live concert of a certain “Back Verandah” radio station.  Anyway, congrats to Serbia for winning Eurovison 007 – make sure to click through and listen to some real Eurovision talent...

Mary J Blige new dates

Here are the new dates (we thought we’d wait a bit before posting them) The new dates will see the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, kicking off in Johannesburg at the Coca-Cola Dome on 18 October, before heading to Durban’s Westridge Park Stadium on the 19th followed by the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town on the 21st of October 2007.  The tour which was set to kick off in Johannesburg on the 12th of May was postponed in order to accommodate a routing change on her world tour. Tickets already bought for the May dates are valid for the new dates. ********************* What a letdown – Mary J Blige’s concert has been ‘postponed’ – boohoo – we await more info but here’s the official PR for now: MARY J BLIGE POSTPONES UPCOMING TOUR METRO FM, Edgars Music Series and Big Concerts regretfully announce the postponement of Mary J. Blige’s highly anticipated South African tour. The tour which was set to kick off in Johannesburg on the 12th of May has been postponed in order to accommodate a routing change on her world tour. NEW TOUR DATES will be released early next week. “Edgars has had a profound effect on the music scene for the past seven years through Edgars Music Series (EMS), its sponsorship of music events both on a national and international scale in South Africa. It is unfortunate that the tour has been postponed, and Edgars would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to Edgars’ customers and Edgars Music Series supporters. However, both Mary J Blige and keen EMS supporters can still look forward to a fantastic showcase once the dates are established,” says Dineo Sobantu, Events & Sponsorship Manager for Edgars Chain. “As media partners for the Mary J Blige tour Metro FM welcome the fact that tour is still going to take place later in the year and hope that her fans and listeners have not been too inconvenienced,” said Bob Mabena, acting station manager Metro FM.. Tickets already bought for the May dates are valid for the new dates The South African media described her as having a “smouldering stage presence” during her April 2000 concerts in, which saw her performing to 48 000 ecstatic fans countrywide. Critics and fans alike will be floored by her powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap, and electrifying live performances when she performs in South Africa in October. For further information log on to: www.edgarsmusicseries.co.za or www.bigconcerts.co.za ****************************** “Well I hope she’s better than last time” has been the wary comment from two of my friends and “WHOOHOOHOO” from everyone else that heard that the...
