Leap Year is round the corner

I don’t know if ladies proposing to their men makes Leap Year special enough for me. Most of the ladies I know would do it on anyday ’cause they’re liberated, free and just nje.  Although if you do go for it girls, as lore aka Wikipedia tells us, “Supposedly (but disputed), in a 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then age five and living in Norway), fines were levied if the proposal was refused by the man; compensation ranged from a kiss to £1 to a silk gown, in order to soften the blow.”  So make sure if you do it and he says no he gets you a sexy Silk some’ing some’ing.  Could be a great way just to get spoilt… even us liberated gals need some spoiling! Leap Year for me is special for it’s EXTRA day that it gives us – just think about how fast 2007 flew by – not to mention the whiplash I am getting this January.  It also means a WHOLE lot more birthday parties for those peeps who only get to get down once every four years.  Good news is the LEAP YEAR parties in JOZI are starting to pour in… First up is an Electric Workshop Reunion Party hosted by Euphonic and the SoulCandi crew – click on the flyer for a taste, and watch this space for...

She is an extraordinary poet, rapper and singer. Describing her art as her “inner guide to personal freedom”, she started writing when she was 12 years old – attending poetry and hip hop shows religiously. Having become an avid reader, she fell in love with words and discovered their power to shape all of existence. She believes that “the word is the strongest medium because not only does it speak to the mind, it also speaks to the soul.” She started performing as an emcee before she did as a poet, at cyphers in Ghandi Square and at Le Club. She believes that hip hop served as an unlimited resourced in her life, constantly providing her with challenges and the strength to deal with her own reality. She then started rapping in different venues and became one of the first female emcees that the Jozi hip hop community paid attention to, often being the only female alongside male emcees. She is currently working on her own album which is due for release in June 2008 and is featured on other hip hop projects such as, the Abomrapper II and the Classix compliation albums, also due for release in 2008. Photo-Story: Soweto’s Holiday Inn

The bonus of hosting overseas visitors is that we get to do the tourist thing in our own country.  And then we share it with you Representers!  Editorista popped off to Walter Sisulu Square to show some foreign friends around and was delighted to visit the BRAND NEW four star Holiday Inn Soweto.  It’s so new the only guests were workers and interior-design looking types doing final touches.  Good job to them, the decor is fantastic – a wonderful blend of local flavour and contemporary chic.  Click HERE to go to our PHOTO-Story. We were lucky enough to get a tour from the highly informative and very friendly Jeffreys who made us feel right at home.  The hotel lines the “Russianesque” Walter Sisulu Freedom Square, with rooms facing into it featuring glorious sized balconies (we can just imagine New Year there!) or the other way out onto the bustling Union Street that captures the authentic Sowetan spirit. There is so much to see and do in and around the HUGE square including the superbly put together Kliptown Open Air Museum that takes us back to the 50s and the drawing up of the Freedom Charter – very emotional but very important.   All that was missing were lots of open-air restaurants, pubs and meeting places although we are sure they are on the cards.  Events organisers take note, for your next imbizo, exec gathering, premium brand launch or medium size dinner, BOOK it at the Holiday Inn Freedom Square for something different and memorable. The hotel boasts 46 luxury rooms, we got to see the twin, double and presidential suite, all gorgeously decked out and appealling … from R1500 up, they are well worth it.  WE CANNOT RECOMMEND A VISIT TO WALTER SISULU SQUARE MORE HIGHLY – GO GO...
