Represent Interview: Loyiso Gola

Miss P is back and she’s working it…Siyanamukela! Catch her tête-à-tête with supernovae Loyiso Gola – reach out for falling stardust as he shoots his way through the entertainment galaxy! Watch this space for ticket give-aways to his show next week. Represent! Loyisa Gola is a funny man. But what else is he about? It’s just over a week before his show ‘Loyiso Gola for President (Part 2)’and Palesa Madumo caught up with him on the set of his television show ‘Dinner with the President’ which airs on Thursdays on SABC 2 at 21:30. (FOR A LIVE ENCOUNTER: Catch Loyiso from 29 November to 1 December, Live from the Alexander Theatre (Siemens St, Braamfontein) from 29 November to 1 December 2007. Tickets are R100 at Computicket and R120 at the door.  Doors open at 19h30 and the show will start at 20h00 sharp!) Take it away Miss P:  Loyiso Gola’s forthright talk could definitely land him in hot water, however, I suspect that he usually gets away with it, it’s in his nature- after all he is a comedian! Watching Loyiso perform his role as Evita Bezuidenhoud’s, (Pieter Dirk Uys) grandson on the kitsch living room set of his comical talk show ‘Dinner with the President’ reveals his blasé yet spontaneous funny man nature.  He’s just turned 24 and scooped the Best Breakthrough Comedy Act award at the inaugural South African Comedy Awards held in September- it seems; this rather lofty bona fide heavyweight from Gugulethu has the world in the palm of his hand. I hung out with him on a break from the first half on the morning’s shoot and Loyiso almost immediately started speaking explicitly about himself, his work and his general opinion about certain matters, including interviews, which he finds to be repetitive and lacking substance at times. I agree, once you’ve read one thing about Loyiso online, it seems you know it all, so in an attempt to uncover new insight, when he asked my opinion about his show last year- ‘Loyiso Gola for President’, I jump on the opportunity to address what I felt was a rather insensitive joke about child sexual abuse in South Africa. “I’m a candid person. I don’t think that jokes about abuse are insensitive, I think what I do allows me to talk about what I want to talk about, the way I want to talk about it. I don’t think people come to a comedy show to learn, they come to laugh and hear about topical issues- in a funny way” It is clear that even though Loyiso makes jokes about sensitive situations, he is actually concerned and active in curbing some of...

Two weeks left to enter the 14th SAMA’s

Muso’s get going  – there are only two weeks left until entries close for The 14th Annual MTN SA Music Awards that take place in May 2008. November 30th 2007 is the cut-off date for those who want to enter the most prestigious music awards event on the industry calendar. With the exception of a handful of categories, product released between 1st December 2006 and 30th November 2007 will be eligible for entry into 2008’s edition of the awards. Those categories where the release date of the album is not considered are Best Selling Album, the Lifetime Achievement Award, Best Music Video and Record of the Year. The proprietary online entry system for record companies will once again be used for the submission of entries. Entry forms must be completed and submitted online at http://www.samusicawards.co.za/. Alternatively, RiSA staff have set up a helpdesk at their premises to assist anyone who cannot make use of the online entry system. RiSA’s offices are located at Unit 4, 150 Bram Fischer Drive, Randburg. All material being submitted for consideration must reach RiSA by no later than November 30th 2007 for entries to be eligible for the 14th Annual MTN SA Music Awards, which are scheduled to take place in early May 2008. Where eligibility requirements are concerned, entry is open to any qualifying recording artist, director, producer or engineer – the qualifying factor being someone who has been a legal resident in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, or Botswana for a minimum of six (6) months on the date of entry or is a South African citizen. For duos or groups, the rules stipulate that not less than 50 percent of the duo or group needs to fall into this citizenship requirement stated above. In addition, unless stated otherwise, collaborations/productions between qualifying artists and international artists are allowed, provided the South African qualifying artists’ participation is given star, or equal, billing. Rules guiding entry submissions are also available for downloading from the MTN SAMA website – www.samusicawards.co.za – a reference tool that serves as a guideline for the entire process of the MTN South African Music Awards. This year there are an incredible 62 categories, with enhancements to existing categories and brand new categories coming from an ongoing desire to reflect the diversity, the dynamism, and the talent that exists in the South African music industry! Of the 62 categories, TEN categories are not open for entry from October 29th to November 30th. These are the Record of the Year, a pubic vote category that employs radio airplay as the mechanism for determining the nominees; Best Selling Album and the newly inaugurated Best...

Represent Recommends: Miss Yucki Reunion

Two of our favourite designers, Alba Poretti and Kat Cameron, the creators of the character and design label MissYucki are very pleased to announce their upcoming Reunion show and Yucki “Pageant Power” celebration opening Friday 30 November 2007 at the Lister Building and running until 4 Dec  – more info here. It’s the first time, Alba and Kat will be together to concoct Yuckiness in South Africa in over two and a half years. They have been separated by global adventuring and are now both together again for this show and ready to bedazzle in the very place where MissYucki first started. Johannesburg. MissYucki will be showing and selling their new range of illustrations; including prints and drawings, unique plush creations and sparkly playful accessories. They will also be hosting an afternoon of city trash trawling with their second annual Trash Trolley Treasure Hunt game. Since her humble beginnings as random doodles, Miss Yucki has grown into a complex and multifaceted character that embodies Alba and Kat’s desire to create, design and explore their world and their identities in South Africa and beyond. MissYucki, the character, is a professional pavement princess and apprentice witch doctor. She is a lost child and little homeless street wanderer who, together with her guardians the muti monster tokoloshies parade the urban landscape hawking their trash treasure and magic medicines, adventuring through dreamscapes and city slums and participating in all the little miss beauty pageants with the goal of becoming the ultimate little miss beauty pageant star. Her mythology is filled with characters including muti monsters, pageant princesses and curious dream- scape creatures. Using a range of mediums, the artists create scenes and themes from the MissYucki character mythology as well as accessories and novelties inspired by the characters way of...

Only Coke can quench such a music-thirst… We searched the globe, screening hundreds of hopefuls, converting some of the biggest known bands to the Coke side of life, and are excited to announce the international line-up for MY COKE FEST 08… The all-star, multi-award winning line-up includes US Rock sensation GOOD CHARLOTTE, Britain’s “Best Live Act” KAISER CHIEFS, Sound Garden and Audioslave front-man CHRIS CORNELL, “Supermassive” MUSE, and the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning KOЯN. On the local front, the first band to be announced is one of SA’s top rock outfits, PRIME CIRCLE. This is only the beginning… so grab a Coke, watch this space, tune in to 5FM and enjoy the Coke side of life!  KOЯN KOЯN has redefined the parameters of heavy music, revolutionising the genre by matching unsettling guitar textures and volcanic rhythms with jagged, introspective lyrics and intense vocal stylings.  The band -Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Fieldy and David Silveria – is one of the most popular hard rock acts in the world today, with a dedicated fan base and widely acclaimed live performances.  They have sold in excess of 25 million albums worldwide, and four of their albums debuted in the top three of the Billboard Top 200, two of which entered the charts at number one. Their bold music defies categorization – it’s blinding musical fury, dark and twisted lyrical candour also radiates a hybrid funk and medicating, metallic shimmer. The multi-media maestros were the first band to simulcast a live concert in 2002 into movie theatres across the U.S. Earlier this year they filmed “MTV Unplugged: KOЯN” at MTV’s Times Square studio, for an MTV global TV event broadcast, across the US, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. MUSE Muse is the UK’s most innovative band. The three-piece group – Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard – produces a unique blend of alternative rock, classical music, electronica, heavy...
