Tickets are almost sold out for The 3rd Annual Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA), which takes place next Saturday night, 24 August at the Teatro at Montecasino. With signature secrecy, the creative team remains tight-lipped about what audiences can expect, other than to say that they are pulling out all the stops to deliver another dynamite production. Taking the format of a hilarious variety show at which six awards are handed out, winners are required to perform seven minutes of stand-up in lieu of an acceptance speech, so those lucky enough to have purchased the few tickets available to the public are in for a treat! Earlier this year, the comedy industry submitted ideas for the sketches that they’d like to perform and the CCA team had the tough time of selecting the best (and funniest) ones to schedule into the show. With fantastic collaborations and a few wildly unlikely appearances, SA’s top comics, budding newcomers, celebs, VIPs and comedy fans will celebrate excellence in comedy on this very special night. This year’s theme, “The Art Of Funny” centers on self-expression and social justice and blends technology, the growing power of social media and urban street art to reshape reality and drive revolution. The beauty of South Africa comes alive in different ways, one of its beauty is its people. Meet Sonja Kruse – better known as “The Ubuntu Girl”, call her amazing, inspirational, crazy, adventurous – her journey to travel across South Africa is a true reflection of what many citizens are faced with – dreams, goals and wishes yet not putting action to them. The Ubuntu Girl has now completed her round-about travel of SA and most definitely #Represent had to get in on the scoop. Mad as a R100. 1. Firstly, I have to command you on doing this project. Your journey across South Africa is worthy of applause. How does it feel to look back on your journey and say “I did it”? It feels like another challenge will come knocking! It feels like I can more fully understand and embrace this complicated, beautiful country we call home, with the full acknowledgement that I know very little 2. What epiphany led you to begin this journey with only a R100? It is bizarre when you have a dream that is so clear in its prophecy to fulfil itself, that in the beginning I thought it was just a silly form of escapism. Until the dream stayed around for four years. So, the significance of the R100, I’m only now making sense of. Perhaps it is because people may have been less likely to relate to a person who did this with no money 3. I’m sure you must have had doubts before leaving your home. What stopped you from entertaining them? Ja, when I calculated how many cappuccinos (my weakness) I could buy with the R100, I had doubts. There was an overwhelming desire inside of me to get to know the people of our country. I was hungry for real engagement and conversation and wanted to experience other people’s experience of life. It could not be ignored 4. What was the end game for this project during conception? This was one of those events in life that had no purpose, other than to follow the heart. And to listen to the voice inside. 5. Did you achieve it? I have to say yes. Most of my decisions going forward now are made from the heart and from instinct. I still doubt myself at times. The Goethe-Institut is known worldwide for promoting intercultural engagement through fostering dialogue and exchange in the arts. GoetheOnMain was developed by the Goethe-Institut South Africa and launched in May 2009 at Arts on Main in Johannesburg as a non-commercial, artist-run project space – an exceptional free platform in a city where cultural spaces are either commercially or governmentally managed. The multi-disciplinary GoetheOnMain has since hosted a wide range of exhibitions, workshops, events and performances; including visual art, literature, film, music, dance, and theatre projects. The way in which project selection takes place is central in understanding the philosophy of GoetheOnMain. In order to create an unbiased and open platform, the programme is decided by an independent committee of arts professionals, who meet after the yearly public call for proposals. Projects are invariably hotly debated. The focus above all else is on artistic quality, whilst maintaining a sensitivity for the context and local relevance, and favouring an experimental approach. The GoetheOnMain space itself also implies a certain conceptual frame – that of the city, or a sense of ‘urbanity’: a focus on the human relation as much as built environment. Previous projects at GoetheOnMain have dealt extensively with politics of space, noting the stratified city, gentrification, issues of access, and a loss of the ‘center’ so typical of many world metropolises, but also of the personal as political – focusing on private narratives, identities, eccentricities, and broader global issues affecting the city dweller.
