Represent Recommends: Our Happy Friday song!

We’ve been listening to this song for about two months now but only found out who sings it today – it’s “If I ever feel better” by the French band PHOENIX – watch the video and listen to it now! Remember when watching YouTube to press pause so the video can load so it doesn’t jump around. HAPPY FRIDAY! Merci Aquoibon!   Read more about them from MTV here. The French band Phoenix draws elements from an eclectic ’80s upbringing to arrive at their rock-synth sound. Thomas Mars (vocals), Deck d’Arcy (bass), and Christian Mazzalai (guitars) were a garage band based out of Mars’ house in the suburbs of...

Urbo: The Adventures of Pax Afrika

Urbo: The Adventures of Pax Afrika

BoingBoing, everyone’s favourite website of wonderful things, features an article on South African kid’s cartoon URBO – according to wikipedia, “URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika is an ongoing science fiction animated television series created by Octagon CSI. It started airing in October 2006. It chronicles the adventures of a gang of teenagers who live in an a futuristic Cape Town, re-named iKapa City, the last known city on the planet, as they fight the evil industrialist overlord Maximilian Malice. Pax Afrika, the son of the missing explorer Zingela Afrika, discovers that he has ancestral powers that allow him to see flashes of the future. Together with his friends, emo mechanic T-Man, hacker girl Keitu, and Una, Malice’s rebellious daughter, Pax plans to find his father and save the city from Malice Industries. But his fate is also tied to the mysterious, hidden city of URBO- an environmental El Dorado located somewhere in the ruins of Africa. SABC3 began airing the first 52 part series on 28th October 2006.” Lauren, the lady that alerted Boingboing to the series, has this to say about URBO: “UPDATE: More info on the show for anyone interested. It’s a sci-fi comedy series (which makes it as much a Star Wars rip-off as South Park, LittleVoice with a smidge of Harry Potter and Futurama in there too). It’s weird and silly and irreverent but we do try to take on big issues relevant to kids.  Not, unfortunately youth apathy in politics, which is true of most countries, not just SA, because our target market of 7-11 is a ways away from that.  But we have taken on AIDS and why it’s important to take medication as well as eating fruit and veg in an episode when the kids tackle an evil virus monster with a multi-pronged attack.  We’ve also done disability, dodgy cell phone videos, acne, celebrity, junk food, the war on terror (really), racism, environmentalism, and now DRM through lunatic plots involving mutant sock monsters, burping apedroids, viciously cute fighting toys, a guy-in-a-bear-suit-in-a-shrimp-suit and the staple prerequisite of any kids’ show: lots of giant robots.” Watch Urbo here: Part 1 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4BopbZ—c Part 2 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nriFS6mHCH4 Part 3 of 3...

Whingeing English show their true colours online

Ag Shame. Not only were the English poor losers that brushed off our president Thabo Mbeki in front of the whole world when he tried to shake their hands (you should be ashamed of yourselves) but they also took some ugly digs at us online in the run up to the final match. Now while we all love the English wit and enjoy The Office for it’s cringe-worthy humour, we don’t believe that bad taste slurs disguised as “cocky British humour” but clearly aimed below-the-belt at South Africa and it’s people, are the way to stir the pot.  We are not perfect, but we certainly try to avoid getting overly personal or dredging up our heinous past to motivate us.  Sadly, some of the English press have shown their old colonial colours and illustrated just how out of touch they are with SA today…. although some South African’s living in London are probably to blame for setting a bad example.  I have heard the most unpatriotic, shocking statements from Saffers in London who do nothing to promote our land.  Come on you lot, cheer up luv! We received this email from James: http://www.skysports.com/rugbyunion/World_Cup/Story/0,21043,13089_2808433,00.html Im actually astounded by this “article”. It is precisely that kind of english attitude in the press that earns the English team so much hate throughout the world. If it werent for these types of nationalistic xenophobes England as a rugby team might be better respected. Point 2 in this guys “article” is unashamed, out-right, virtually gleeful racism. Its embarrasing. You can see that he’s so pleased with himself and that he thinks he’s writing something ingeniously witty and clever. On top of it he represents Skysports. Does anyone know how to pass this along to Francois Pienaar? see if Tony “BNP” Curtis has the nerve to tell Francois to his face what he thinks of the “Afrikaner” accent. In this day and age you are perfectly entitled to these opinions but spewing them out onto the webpage of a major news network is outrageous. Tony Curtis of skysports news obviously thought he was blogging on his private little network of “Britain for the British”. Would this empire-phile prefer his bar tenders to be proper english people “oo li’ taw’ propa li'”? That charming bunch of Brits that mill around social housing compunds mugging people or impregnating teenagers. Perhaps he would he prefer his bar tenders to be more of the ever so posh, stuttering, Hugh Grant clone? “er…wha…wha can can I get you? Stella o…o..ok..right you are”. Theres no picture of Tony on the skysports webpage but from the tabloid tone of his “article” I bet he...
